Tailgate G1 cartoon

Tailgate is an Autobot minibot scout and a minor character in the Transformers: Generation One franchise. He made a small appearance in the Sunbow cartoon, and one "spotlight" appearance in the Marvel comic. He transforms into a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am sports car.

History[]

Cartoon[]

Tailgate was only seen in Five Faces of Darkness, as one of a group of Minibots stationed at the Ark. When the Constructicons built Trypticon, he targeted Mount St. Hilary and the Ark. Tailgate and the other Autobots defended the Ark with all the firepower at their disposal. However, the Ark was left devastated in Trypticon's wake, and Tailgate's troops were beaten and scattered.

Comics[]

Marvel's the Transformers (UK)[]

In Resurrection, Tailgate was seen on Cybertron, working in Emirate Xaaron and Ultra Magnus's covert cell, and was part of the army when Optimus Prime came to Cybertron and rallied the troops for an assault on Darkmount.

In Underworld, Tailgate finished his training at the Autobot Military Academy, but upon graduation was provoked into joining Flattop and Subsea in venturing underground, in order to prove his courage. When a group of Cybertronian Mutants attacked and slaughtered his fellow cadets, Tailgate stood his ground. A blast into Smeltdown's chest-furnace obliterated most of the sewer-dwellers, leaving only the ape-like Rotgut. However, a little quick thinking, and Tailgate was able to use the larger machine's bulk against him, flipping Rotgut into the pyre left in Smeltdown's wake. Pipes and Outback eventually arrived as Tailgate surfaced and let them know of his fellow cadets' fate.

Regeneration One[]

Regeneration One does not include the UK stories.

Tailgate made a few appearances in Regeneration One. In Destiny he participated in the defense of Iacon against the onslaught of the Blitz Engines and the Decepticon crew of the Warworld. However, he was shot by Needlenose. In The War to End All Wars Tailgate travelled to the Hub Network with Rodimus Prime to battle Jhiaxus. Almost immediately upon returning to Cybertron, however, he was attacked and killed by a shadow-leech.

Personality[]

Tailgate sometimes has his mind stuck in low gear, believes 55 mph speed limit is infringement on rights of cars. Likewise, he is unable to comprehend the difference between a non-living Earth machine and sentient robotic life such as himself.

Abilities[]

Tailgate can transform into the car. In his car mode, he goes 180 mph, range 600 miles. In his robot mode, he uses ferrocobalt magnet under hood to be pulled by and within a few feet of other vehicles, reducing his fuel use to near zero.

Aligned Universe[]

A version of Tailgate, with the same design as Cliffjumper appeared in flashback in the Transformars Prime episode Predatory, voiced by Josh Keaton, who mainly voiced Jack Darby in that series. Here, Tailgate was Arcee's first partner.

Tailgate was a member of Delta Team during an unnamed battle. He failed to take out a sniper, forcing Arcee to enter hand-to-hand combat. Tailgate and Arcee were captured by Airachnid. Airachnid threatened to kill Tailgate unless she was told the co-ordinates of an impending attack. After Arcee claimed she did not know them, Airachnid made good on that threat. Arcee escaped the same fate, but Tailgate's death hit her hard.
