~ Takayuki Yagami |
Takayuki Yagami (八神 隆之, Yagami Takayuki) is a major character of Sega's Like a Dragon franchise, being the main protagonist of the 2018 spin-off action-adventure drama video game Judgment and it's 2021 sequel Lost Judgment.
Yagami was once a promising defense attorney lawyer until his self-imposed resignation after his requited client Shinpei Okubo murdered his girlfriend Emi Terasawa. He now works as a private detective, with his good friend and ex-yakuza Masaharu Kaito as his partner.
He is voiced by and modeled after Takuya Kimura in Japanese and Greg Chun in English.
Background[]
Once a promising defense attorney, Yagami was damned by his fellow attorneys and the public after one of his old clients, acquitted of a previous criminal charge, was caught by police for murdering his girlfriend. As such, he drops out of the public eye and starts up the Yagami Detective Agency, working as a PI alongside Kaito.
Biography[]
Takayuki Yagami is a former lawyer turned private detective who uses his smarts, wits and even his fists to fight his way to the truth.
Yagami's life was shaped by tragedy at just 15 years old; his father, a defense attorney, secured the acquittal of an accused murderer, but he and Yagami's mother were killed by the victim's father as an act of revenge. Now an orphan, Yagami dropped out of high school and moved to Kamurocho, where he was eventually taken in by Mitsugu Matsugane, the patriarch of the Matsugane Family, who raised and helped support Yagami into becoming a lawyer himself.
Situated at the Genda Law Office, Yagami's fledgling legal career took a big turn when he overcome seemingly impossible odds to secure the acquittal of Shinpei Okubo, who was accused of the murder of a hospital patient. All the more notable considering Japan's high conviction rate. Soon after the acquittal, however, Okubo was later arrested and found guilty for murdering his girlfriend, the events of which ruined Yagami's public reputation.
In the modern day, Yagami has quit his legal career and become a private detective, running the Yagami Detective Agency in Kamurocho to make ends meet. When a series of mysterious murders take place in 2018, Yagami soon finds out that they're connected to his past case with Okubo. Diving head first into the mystery, Yagami hopes to find the truth behind the murders and potentially the answers to what really happened all those years ago.
Abilities []
- Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Yagami is an exceptionally accomplished martial artist, having mastered numerous martial arts, particularly five schools of Kung Fu but also Bajiquan, developing from them his own fighting styles, highly adaptable and fluid. His combat prowess marks him as the best among his team, who are all remarkable fighters in their own right, and among the strongest warriors in the Yakuza universe. Although not quite on par with Kiryu, Yagami's proficiency in combat is still enough to single-handedly take down smaller but still numerous groups of enemies without much effort, be it unskilled civilians, gang members, or militarily-trained soldiers, and he was able to contend with and defeat some of the most dangerous criminals: He was able to maintain an upper hand over Kuroiwa, who had easily defeated Kaito, and slowly but surely best him to submission, forcing him to use a gun to try to regain the upper hand, outfight Kazuki Soma, the most dangerous member of the RK, twice, with Soma only defeating him in their first fight due to Yagami's wild emotions and only after having been pummeled, and while holding back, proved to be equally matched with Jin Kuwana, a remarkably dangerous fighter who openly showed respect for Yagami's abilities, before revealing his true abilities and handily winning in their final fight, even while battered.
