~ Maruki on Memories |
Dr. Takuto Maruki, (also known as the Dreamer), is a supporting character and the final boss in the 2019 action-adventure video game Persona 5: Royal (which is an expansion of the original 2016 video game). He was originally a confidant in the first two semesters before taking over as the main antagonist of the third semester.
Dr. Maruki was a kind-hearted and friendly man who served as a councillor for Shujin Academy to help students who suffered horrible treatment by Suguru Kamoshida. There, he became acquainted with Ren Amamiya and became his Confidant. It was later revealed he was a Persona user, with his Persona being Azathoth, which later evolves into Adam Kadmon.
Following the defeat of Yaldabaoth, he was corrupted by Azathoth (mainly due to Yaldabaoth's actions) and was turn into a delusional extremist, using his power to "save" the world by creating a new world of his recognition, where everyone will live happily without their past troubles. Despite these noble intentions, his actions were too far and this forced the Phantom Thieves to stop him.
In Japanese dub, he is voiced by Satoshi Hino who is mostly known for his role as Kyojuro Rengoku in the anime Demon Slayer and Sai from the anime Naruto. In the English dub, he is voiced by the late Billy Kametz, who also voiced Josuke Higashikata in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable and Ferdinand von Aegir from Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.
Personality[]
Throughout the entirety of the game, Maruki is nice and helpful towards all people he meets and also helps the individual members of the Phantom Thieves as a Student Counselor. However, in a dialogue with Goro Akechi, we can find out that his helpfulness ends up with someone taking advantage of him. Maruki is also shown to be clumsy, for example when he hits his head on a microphone.
He has a deep rebellion and hates the injustice in the world and desires to destroy all of it, which resulted in him developing a Persona. But his Persona also came with a palace due to his rebellion being linked with distorted desires.
In his palace, he shows extreme philosophies, as he attempts to rid all the world of evil, by using his reality-warping abilities he brainwashes and kidnaps Sumire to make them believe that he is creating a better world for them and if the player doesn't succeed in stopping him, Maruki will send the Protagonist to eternal sleep in the belief that his world is perfect.
If the player opposes him he learns from his mistakes and becomes a Uber driver. However, if the player accepts his reality, we can see him at the end of the game taking a picture of the Phantom Thieves members after they graduate from High School.
Biography[]
Previous to the events of the game, the parents of Takuto Maruki's fiancé Rumi were tragically murdered during a home invasion and Rumi herself had gone into a breakdown due to the shock. Due to the anger in Maruki during these events, he awakens his Persona Azathoth, which allows him to wipe out all of his memories in Rumi. These events motivate him to research psience, but unfortunately his funding was revoked due to a lack of evidence of his work, resulting in him working as a Counselor. Eventually, he came into contact with Sumire Yoshizawa, who tells her that her sister died, here Maruki uses his Persona abilities again to make her think that she is her sister Kasumi.
After Suguru Kamoshida's imprisonment, he became the student counselor of Shujin Academy, where he would regularly have meetings with the members of the Phantom Thieves, especially with the protagonist which he ask for help with his research. Eventually, Takuto Maruki has to leave Shujin.
On Christmas after Yaldabaoth's defeat, Azathoth fully awakens and Maruki changes reality, by using his Persona to fulfill the desires of the Phantom Thieves. Harus's father never died, Makoto and her sister have a good relationship, Wakaba Isshiki and Goro Akechi are still alive, Shiho Suzuki never jumped from the roof at Shujin, Morgana is a human, and Madarame treats Yusuke good.
He gives the Protagonist an offer, in which he can choose to either abandon his reality or accept it.
If the player decides to fight him, they will face off at his palace and his Persona will evolve into Adam Kadmon. After his defeat, he learns his mistakes and becomes an uber driver.
However if the player chooses to accept his reality, all the members of the Phantom Thieves will live their lives not knowing that Maruki rules it. Once they all graduate from Shujin Academy, Maruki makes a picture of them.
And if the player fails to fight him, Maruki will send the player into an eternal sleep where he can not wake up.
