Tamahiko Shima is the male protagonist of the manga and anime series Taisho Otome Fairy Tale.

He is voiced by Yūsuke Kobayashi while he is voiced by Aya Yamane as child in the Japanese version and Ben Balmaceda while he is voiced by Daisy Guevara as child in the English version.

Appearance[]

He is tall at 6 feet with brown hair and grey eyes.

Personality[]

Tamahiko starts out as a self-loathing and pessimistic individual. Having been raised in a family devoid of love and was notorious for trampling over people, he was stoic and a loner. He had no reason to get along with his siblings and felt pressure from his father's expectations as the second son. Deep down, he is actually more kind and respectful than he lets on.

As a result of the car accident, he rejected life itself, resigned to his fate to live and die in ignominy. However, his better nature was drawn out when Yuzuki comes into his life. Forced to keep her around because she was bought, he tries and fails to retain his pessimistic nature. Through her encouragement, he learns to appreciate life again. As he spends more time Yuzuki, he develops a romantic attraction to her positive outlook and strength against adversity. As his outlook improves, he decides to accept her as bride, but resolves to become a better man first. As his bond with Yuzuki grows, he goes from a downright pessimist to a doting husband and father.

Tamahiko also learns he has a knack for teaching, becoming popular among the children of the nearby village as a excellent tutor.

History[]

He was born as the second son of the Shima family. Although the family had wealth and privilege, it lacked love. Therefore Tamahiko grew up never receiving affection from his parents, who ignored him. On his 16th birthday, a car accident killed his mother and cost him usage of his right arm. His father was humiliated at having a disabled son and banished him to save face for the family. He was given a villa in the countryside of Chiba as his home.

As he accepts he is to live and die alone, a 14-year-old girl named Yuzuki is bought by his father to be Tamahiko's caregiver and potential bride. Although Tamahiko welcomes Yuzuki and shows her kindness, he keeps himself guarded from bonding with her, especially after his father has him declared dead to further disown him. Yuzuki, however, gradually brings him out of his depression as she showers him with kindness and compassion that begins to heal his emotional wounds.

Tamahiko begins to show hints at his growing feelings for Yuzuki when she celebrates his 18th birthday with him and gifts him a bookmark. As she is the first person to care about his birthday and give him a present, he is overcome with happiness. He starts to become protective of her and is willing to do anything to make her happy. On her 15th birthday, she says she is legally old enough to marry him but he doesn't believe he is any good for her because of his disability. She counters he makes her happy, causing him to impulsively kiss her for the first time. Tamahiko finally realizes he loves Yuzuki when she is presumed missing after the Great Kanto Earthquake and he rushes to Tokyo to find her. Once he finds her alive, he is overcome with relief that she is alive and stays by her side as she recovers. Although they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other, Tamahiko is in no rush to give her an answer on whether or not he will marry her because he wants to become a better man before he makes a decision.

On Yuzuki's 16th birthday, Tamahiko finally tells her that he loves her and asks her to marry him. She passionately kisses him and they almost have sex before they stop, as they agreed to wait until they got married before consummating their relationship. However, his older sister, Tamayo, blackmails Yuzuki into leaving Tamahiko, who is selected by his father to be the next head of the family. As he is happier living a simple, peaceful life with Yuzuki than becoming the head of the wealthy, pernicious Shima family, Tamahiko severs ties to his family in order to marry her. Before they get married, Yuzuki convinces Tamahiko to sleep with her. They then get married and live a poor but happy life.

In Shōwa Otome Otogi Banashi, Tamahiko and Yuzuki have three children: two sons named Tsukihiko and Haruki, and a daughter named Tamami.
