You never want to give up. You always want to try. I admire you!
~ Tatl

Tatl is the deuteragonist of the 2000 video game The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. She is the twin sister of Tael and the best friend of Skull Kid. She is Link's constant companion throughout the game, essentially filling in the role of her predecessor, Navi.

Biography[]

Before the events of Majora's Mask begin, Tatl and Tael were wandering around Termina Field until they stumble upon the lonely Skull Kid, who had a horrible fallout with his friends, and they would later become his new friends. They begin to spend time with each other more and have much fun together. It eventually goes haywire when Skull Kid decides to ambush the Happy Mask Salesman and took Majora's Mask from him, and upon placing it on his face, he quickly becomes possessed by the entity inhabiting it, which turned the Skull Kid's typically harmless pranks into malicious intent.

They later come across Link riding alone with Epona, who is searching for Navi and startle Epona, knocking Link off. Skull Kid then steals both the Ocarina of Time and Epona as Link pursues them. He falls into the hole inside a tree hollow, where the Skull Kid sadistically turned Link into a Deku Scrub, much to their amusement. As Tatl taunts Link as Skull Kid and Tael were leaving, she gets left behind and she goes on to accuse him of separating her from her brother, but once Link moves along, she stops and apologizes to him for her misdeeds and decides to join him. As they continue, they come across the deceased Deku Butler's Son, who is now a tree. Eventually they meet with the Happy Mask Salesman, who is missing an important mask and gives them the objective to retrieve the mask from the Skull Kid at all costs in return for helping him regain his original form. After letting three days pass after completing tasks for civilians, Link confronts the Skull Kid where Tael tells them to head to the four regions to summon the Four Giants, only to be swatted by Skull Kid for speaking out of line. Link managed to get the Ocarina of Time back and plays the Song of Time just before the Moon crashes. The Happy Mask Salesman teaches Link the Song of Healing to revert him to normal and upon learning that Link doesn't have Majora's Mask, he panics and tells Link of the mask's dark origins where it was used in demonic hexing rituals by an ancient tribe before they had to seal it to prevent its misuse, and that it had the power to destroy the world, which caused the Moon's descent and urges them to get it back.

When Link and Tatl head to the Southern Swamp and see a drawing of the Skull Kid and the fairies, Tatl becomes nostalgic over the good times with him and her brother. They learned that, due to the Four Giants being trapped and unable to help save Termina from the Moon, each of the four regions are afflicted with Majora's curse, the Southern Swamp's water being poisoned with a monkey framed for kidnapping the Deku Princess, Snowhead Mountain plagued with a permanent winter that threatens the Gorons with Darmani III being killed trying to get to Snowhead Temple, Great Bay's water becoming too warm and murky, which made sea life decompose and mutate along with Lulu's eggs being stolen by pirates and Mikau being mortally injured trying to get them back, and Ikana Canyon's restless angry spirits wandering and plaguing the region deterring visitors and a young girl dealing with her cursed father. They help put an end to each of the curses and the suffering that came with them while freeing the four Giants.

Once Link saves the regions and frees the Giants, he heads to Clock Town Tower at midnight of the Final Day where he confronts him again and plays the Oath to Order, which brings the Giants together and temporarily stopped the Moon from colliding with the town. Tatl and Tael reunite, and the latter explains that it isn't Skull Kid's fault, but the being within Majora's Mask. Majora then reveals himself and drops its unconscious vessel as it ascends into the Moon and in an attempt to break through the Giant's grasp and destroy everything. Link pursues Majora, with Tatl telling him that she admires him, and engages it in the decisive final battle. Link emerges victorious and the Moon is finally destroyed and replaced with a harmless rainbow. Tatl and Tael reunite with him in Termina Field where they see the now free Skull Kid reconciling with the Four Giants and realized that they never abandoned him even after they have been away. Skull Kid befriends Link and recognizes the smell of the kid who taught him the song in the forest. The Happy Mask Salesman finally has Majora's Mask, free from the demon's grasp, so he bids them farewell, though he also mentions that good-byes don't have to last forever. Tatl, the Skull Kid and Tael say good-bye to Link as he leaves to continue his search for Navi and returns to his world.
