Corporal Taylor Henry "Dutch" Miles is an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST) in the UNSC Marine Corps. He was a member of Alpha-Nine, a squad led by Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck during the Battle of Earth and in the post-war era. He is married to Gretchen Ketola, a fellow ODST.
Biography[]
Halo Legends[]
Dutch was one of the Helljumpers assigned to assassinate an unknown target. However, their sergeant, Cortez, assigned Spartan Cal-141 as the sniper who would perform the kill by sniper rifle, which upset his peer O'Brien. Dutch made fun of O'Brien for having been saved by the Spartan twice, but to their shock, when the mysterious Spartan saved his life a third time, it was at the cost of her own. This haunting experience changed their perception of Spartans and viewed them more humanely and honorably. They now see Spartans as their legendary companions instead of machine-like rivals.
Halo 3: ODST[]
Dutch made his debut in the Halo series in the 2009 video game Halo 3: ODST, though the anime Halo Legends chronologically took place before the Battle of Mombasa. Under Veronica Dare's command, ODST squad Alpha-Nine was separated by interference during orbital drop, meaning that their drop pods were scattered after landing on Earth. They all experience their own battle taking place during humanity's war with the Covenant, with Dutch assisting Marines that were suffering heavy casualties due to the Covenant's heavy use of vehicular combat. He is far below capable of single-handedly turning the tide of this battle, so the marines end up helping Dutch escape.
Dutch eventually reunites with his squad, and they try their best to assist the UNSC and survive.
Equipment[]

~ Edward Buck |
Buck states that Dutch is a heavy weapons specialist, which makes sense considering that he commonly carries an M6 Spartan Laser. The Spartan Laser is capable of destroying small vehicles the size of a car or truck, but larger vehicles such as a Wraith may take two or three shots. Dutch is likely an expert at using the weapon which takes a lot of skill to aim.
He is also commonly seen with a pistol and/or suppressed SMG, though he also has skill with close-quarters combat range weapons. He wears ODST armor and sometimes a helmet to protect from head trauma, as well as a backpack.
