The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (often shortened as TMNT or Ninja Turtles) are a group of four anthropomorphic turtles and the titular main protagonists of the original Mirage comics of the same name. They are named after four Renaissance artists, and were trained by Splinter in the art of ninjutsu. From their home in the storm sewers of New York City, they battle petty criminals, evil overlords, mutated creatures, and alien invaders while attempting to remain hidden from society. Their leader is Leonardo.
Biography[]
The Turtles were once ordinary pet turtles bought by a young boy, until an accident caused the boy to drop them all into the sewer. The mutagen from the truck in the accident dropped into the sewer as well, covered them and the passing-by rat of the deceased Hamato Yoshi, who adopted them afterwards. The mutagen mutated them all into being anthropomorphic, with the turtles' first word being "Splinter", as such named the rat.
Splinter then named them with those in an old renaissance art book that he found in a storm drain: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael, and trained them martial arts that he learned from his late master, so they will grow up into assassins to avenge him, who was killed by the Shredder to avenge his older brother, Oroku Nagi.
Years later, the Turtles finally have a fight with the Shredder and successfully kill him, avenging Yoshi at last. Later on, they also befriend April O'Neil and Casey Jones, find out the true nature of their mutation from the Utroms, and fight many other evil forces.
They appeared in the movie Turtles Forever, helping their counterparts stop Utrom Shredder from destroying the multiverse. They have also appeared in the 2012 series crossover episode "Trans-Dimensional Turtles", where they chase both 2012 and 1987 versions of Donatello while they try to disarm the Dimensionier Krang put there.

Trivia[]
- In the original comics, the Turtles all wore red bandanas, but in later media, they wear different colored bandanas, except for Raphael who keeps his red bandana.
