~ Atom Eve on naming her daughter. |
Terra Grayson, later known as InvinciGirl, is a major character in the Image Comics comic book series Invincible.
She is the daughter of Mark Grayson and Samantha Eve Wilkins, also known by their superhero alter egos Invincible and Atom Eve.
Biography[]
Birth[]
She came into the world following Eve's surgery, which was necessary after a robot had severed her leg. The doctor handed her over to Mark, who was overwhelmed with emotion as he gazed at her for the first time. He remarked that her life would be a mess, echoing Eve's earlier sentiments. As Eve cared for their newborn, she urged Mark to leave and put an end to Rex's turmoil.
While the child received care, Eve instructed Mark to go back and intervene with Rex. When Mark came back, he informed her that he had won.
William Clockwell and Rick Sheridan, longtime friends of Mark and Eve, inquired about the whereabouts of the "little monster," referring to their child. Eve responded that she was at her parents' house and that they would be joining them soon. Once Mark and Eve arrived, they shared a meal together. During dinner, a disagreement arose between Eve and her parents regarding the fact that their child still didn't have a name. When she began to cry, Mark suggested he attend to her, and Eve, thinking the baby was hungry, breastfed her, much to her father's disgust. While Eve's parents looked after their daughter, Mark and Eve attended the funerals of Black Samson, Kid Thor, Knockout, and Cecil Stedman. Later that day, as they contemplated names for their daughter, Mark seemed distracted. After apologizing, he expressed his frustration about Rex's growing influence and his desire to take on his responsibilities as a father, leading him to conclude that they needed to move to ensure their daughter wouldn't lose him.
The family traveled to the mountain cabin retreat of Dupli-Kate and The Immortal, but ultimately decided not to assist in the fight against Rex. Later that night, the child awoke in tears after Eve attempted to share a bed with Mark, who pushed her away. They bid farewell to their families and embarked on a journey through space, naming their child Terra, calling her their little piece of Earth.
Arrival on Talescria[]
The family arrived on Talescria and were welcomed by Allen the Alien. To his astonishment, Terra unexpectedly punched him in the eye. Once Mark and Eve completed their unpacking, they drifted off to sleep. Eve tucked Terra into bed and leaned over to whisper to Mark that they should get intimate, but Mark stumbled backward into a wall just as Oliver Grayson and his girlfriend Haluma walked in. After Mark has an emotional revelation of what Anissa had done to him, Eve called out his name. When Mark rushed into the room, he found Terra unresponsive, as she had said she wasn't breathing.
Mark inquired about the situation, and Eve explained that when she entered the room, their child was not breathing and seemed to be on the verge of death. Mark quickly gathered both of them and rushed out to find a hospital. After consulting with three residents of Talescria, they finally reached a medical facility. A doctor arrived shortly after and began examining Terra. When Eve mentioned that their child was part-human and part-Viltrumite, the doctor hesitated to provide treatment until Mark insisted he do so. While they waited in the hospital, Oliver and Haluma showed up after receiving Mark's message. Mark, frustrated, questioned what they had added to the food they brought, to which Oliver replied that Haluma hadn’t added anything since he regularly ate it. Following a heated exchange between Mark and Haluma, Oliver intervened as Mark expressed his deep concern for his daughter's life. Eve then called out to Mark, reassuring him that Terra was okay and that the doctor needed to speak with him. The doctor explained the circumstances that led to Terra's condition and advised that as long as she avoids solid food, the plant would not pose a threat. To prevent future incidents, he recommended scheduling a dietary consultation with nutrition specialists.
One night, Terra began to cry, prompting Mark to wake up and see what was wrong. As soon as she noticed him, her tears ceased, revealing that she missed him. Mark and Terra then enjoyed some father-daughter time until Eve woke up, after which the three of them headed out for lunch and a leisurely walk.
Mark and Eve discovered that the green lands were not as welcoming as they had hoped, as they were attacked by creatures known as thorgs, which made them initially feel like they had the area to themselves. One night, the family decided to participate in what Oliver referred to as a "sonic play." Eve inquired if it would be alright to bring Terra along, to which Oliver explained that it was similar to a movie—a vibrant light show accompanied by sound and vibrations. Although he believed Terra would enjoy it, she ended up crying after the show, indicating that she did not have a good time. Realizing it was past Terra's bedtime, Eve decided it was best to head home and get her to sleep.
Reboot[]
As Eve explored around Talescria, Mark and Terra enjoyed some quality father-daughter time together. Upon Eve's return, Mark passed Terra back to her, claiming that she had missed her. However, Eve doubted this, convinced that Mark had kept Terra so engaged that she hadn’t had a moment to think about her. With his mission to locate and confront Thragg ahead of him, Mark bid farewell to both Eve and Terra before setting off on his journey.
After explaining that he had went five years into the past to restore balance and bring back everyone who had died, Mark asked about Terra's whereabouts. He was taken aback by how much she had grown. Terra then asked him if he was her dad.
Later Life[]
Mark, with tears in his eyes, expressed how much he missed being there for her during his absence. He offered a heartfelt apology, and Terra, still filled with love for him, forgave him. Eve felt a wave of emotion at Mark's return, and soon the family shared an embrace. That morning, as Terra was taken to school, she bid farewell to her parents and spotted her teacher. While the family was getting ready to move to their new planet, Miss Lukka, Terra's teacher, presented her with an educational unit. Terra affectionately named it Eddy before the teacher could reveal its actual name. Once the family arrived on their new planet, Terra and Eddy set off to gather flowers together.
Eddy advised Terra to go home and have lunch in 20 minutes to keep her metabolism optimal. Terra, puzzled, asked what "optimal" meant, mistakenly calling it "optinal." Eddy explained that it meant "good." In response, Terra handed Eddy a flower, again using "optinal" instead of optimal. Eddy started to explain how flowers grow, but Terra seemed uninterested, so he simply noted that the flower was blue, a primary color, which bored her even more. Eddy mentioned that his goal was to help her learn while having fun, but Terra found it dull. To make it more exciting, Eddy adjusted his approach and challenged Terra to find three orange flowers in the next thirty seconds. If she succeeded, she would get to skip spelling lessons until after lunch, and she eagerly accepted the challenge. In no time, she returned with four orange flowers and one green one. Eddy praised her effort and set up a second challenge: a race back home.
Before they could begin, Mark stopped her to ask if she was having fun which she happily told him what she and Eddy were doing and she asked him if Eve showed him a pond where they could catch larbs. Mark said they could send Eddy up to the house where she could show him the pond but Terra said it was far so Mark told her they could fly there instead much to her excitement but Terra got scared as they were flying to high above the ground so Mark landed back down. Mark instead flew Terra close to the ground but at a slow pace. Much later at night, Terra and Mark are drawing. Mark asked Terra for some of the markers but she was using all of them which soon turned to a playfight. Storytime hit. Eddy wanted to read Terra a story but Mark wanted to read one and Terra agreed. Eddy recommended a story to ensure advancements in her vocabulary but Terra cut him off and chose a story called Opple Dopple. Terra and Mark took turns reading a page and Eve joins them.
The family visited Allen in the hospital after he was blown out of a building. Eve left out the hospital room with Terra after Telia and her brother entered. After he said Mark couldn't make her feel how he made her felt, Eve punched him and Terra cheered on. She joyously talked about how he wouldn't stop talking and how Eve hit him and called it awesome. Mark told her it wasn't good to hit others while Oliver whispered to her that it was a little awesome and Terra loudly agreed. After Telia came in and explained how her brother (name's Kubian) made her happy and adding Terra to it by calling her a "little monster" and her being in the way, Oliver had to cover her ears. When Eve came back, Terra cheerfully asked if she killed Kubian. At the station on the moon, the family visited Mark's parents. Terra said to Nolan that Mark is strong like him and she let him fly her slowly. Nolan said he was jealous as he held her. Terra compared Nolan's flying with Mark's and said his flying was scarier compared to her dad's. Nolan explained he wanted her to be strong and that he scared her so she could overcome that fear and if she did everything slow, she'd be scared always. In the halls, Eve attacked Anissa for what she put Mark through and Nolan told Debbie to get her out. Terra was upset she couldn't get to see more of the fight.
Terra and Eddy were working on math and she got a division question correct. Mark turned up and he and Terra embrace but he told her she still needed to do her schoolwork much to Terra's unhappiness. Eve then showed up. She said her parents loved seeing Terra and added that her dad gifted her a broom which was not the appropriate gift. Later, the family pack and set off for their planet. Debbie said to Terra she'd miss her the most and called her "button". Terra didn't want to be called that and instead wanted the name "Penelope Pancake". Back at their planet, Terra hid behind a tree as Mark and Eve spoke with each other. She unhid after Eve said the word "damn". After she said it herself, Eve warned her to go inside and do her work.
Terra and Mark were playing catch. Eddy wanted to do a science lesson while having fun outdoors but Terra was already doing this with her father. Mark went to catch a break after having his arm worn out from throwing the baseball. He told Terra to go with Eddy to get smarter but Terra wanted to continue playing with Mark trying to get him to change his mind but to no avail. All of a sudden, Onaan, Thragg's Viltrumite-Thraxan hybrid son, swooped down and destroyed Eddy with a dropkick. He then picked Terra with killer intent. Mark hit him in the face getting him to lose hold of her, handed Terra to Eve and told her to get her to a safe place. Suddenly, Ursaal, Thragg's Viltrumite-Thraxan hybrid daughter, got hold of Eve's prosthetic leg and yanked it off. Terra asked if she was a robot and Eve assured her it was just her leg. Terra cheered Mark on as he hit Ursaal in the face. Eve told Mark to bring Terra to a safer place and to fly fast. Terra was worrisome for Eve but Mark told her they'd all be fine. He then told her he had to fly very high fast and fast and she needed to be brave. She agreed to and it happened. Terra was in pain as they were being followed by Onaan. Terra told Mark to slow down but he couldn't. As Mark flew, Terra became breathless. Mark stopped so Terra could catch a break. Onaan caught up and shouldered Mark in his back causing him to lose hold of Terra. He quickly got his hold back as he elbow uppercut Onaan. Flying off, Mark told Terra to hold her breath again. Mark said he was going to get her to a safe place so he could fight off Onaan and stopped to get her to get some air. Onaan again caught up so Mark needed to fly faster. Onaan caught up and grabbed Mark's leg causing him to lose hold of Terra again. Mark kicked him in the face and put Terra on his back. Onaan planned to do barbaric things to Terra and Mark responded with a punch. He ended up losing hold of Terra once again after Onaan uppercut him and held Terra with murderous intent and threw her aside after Mark went to fight him. Mark tried to help her but Onaan grabbed his legs and Mark punched him. Terra fell and fell until she found herself floating. She tried to tell her father of this but he was nowhere in sight. She was afraid to land until someone caught her.
It was Thragg. He harshly said falling would've been less less painful. Terra struggled to get Thragg to lose his hold. He said to her that she would've been a good addition to his army but "had to die". Terra tried to be brave but Thragg was not moved by this attempt and attempted to kill her himself by crushing her head. Luckily, Oliver pushed Thragg off losing his hold. He told Terra to find her father. Terra watched as Oliver and Thragg fought and being worried for her uncle and in an attempt to stop Thragg, she kicked him in the back but this resulted in her leg snapping because of Thragg's body. She then ended up having to watch Thragg kill Oliver by punching through his heart. Thragg knelt down and said to Terra how being afraid wouldn't help her in that situation. He then proceeded to wipe Oliver's blood on her face while pretending to wipe her tears away. Since Mark held Onaan hostage and Thragg had Terra hostaged, this would be an even attempt to let her go unharmed. As Mark and Thragg fought subsequently after the death of Onann, Eve tended to Terra's leg. While she's doing this, Ursaal attacked. As the fighting went on, Terra helplessly had to watch her parents be brutally mutilated by Thragg and Ursaal (Eve had her jaw pulverized with a punch and Mark was torn in half). After, she's left alone to die. Terra tearfully begged her parents not to leave her and to her surprise, Eve used her powers to heal herself and Mark. Terra asked why Oliver wasn't healed but Eve told her it was too late.
The family attended Oliver's funeral. Terra screamed in horror as Mark attacked Allen. Terra asked Eve if everything was about fighting and Eve said it was not and that everything would go to normal soon. Eve told Nolan to watch over Terra while she tried to stop Mark and Allen. Nolan himself wanted to fly up and stop the two but Debbie refused to allow it and told him he'd make things worse and to be a grandfather much to Terra's agreement. After Allen spoke with Haluma, Terra asked why her dad fought him and Allen answered that he was upset and added that her parents would be back soon. She secondly asked what happened to his eye. Allen said his eye was sensitive and that he had the memory of her as an infant punching him there. Terra thought that it was cool. Allen told her not to do it again seeing that was what she was thinking. She apologized.
Later, Terra and everyone else celebrated Mark and Eve's marriage. She's in the care of her grandparents as Mark and Eve have their honeymoon.
Mark and Eve dress in their old suits and they set off to check on Terra. When they arrived, Terra laughed and thought their suits looked silly. Eve said to her they were the suits they wore on earth before Terra was born. Terra asked if everyone on Earth wore them and Eve answered that only superheroes wore them. After Terra, Mark, Eve, and Debbie converse about the supersuits, Terra and her parents spend family time together before Mark and Eve have to leave to battle Thragg and his army. They assign Debbie to take care of Terra. While on the balcony, Debbie tells Terra that she lived on Talescria with Nolan for a long time. Terra, worried, tells her grandmother she could forget her dad Mark again. Debbie assured her her parents were with her grandfather in space fighting bad guys. Terra asked if they could get hurt. Debbie encouraged her to be strong which Terra literally tried to do.
While Debbie and Haluma were chatting, Debbie heard a loud noise and ran in the room the kids were in. When she entered, it was shown that Terra was trying to fly to the ceiling. She explained that she was practicing to help her parents in the battle. Haluma tearfully explained to Debbie how Oliver made her feel safe and the sound that was in the room made her worried for her two kids. Haluma's words brought Terra to tears as well. She explained that Oliver saved her from Thragg blaming herself for what happened to him. She expressed regret for it and hoped that it wouldn't ever happen to anyone else.
On the balcony, Terra and Debbie talk. Terra is upset that she wasn't allowed to fly and believed that Debbie was being mean by not letting her do what she wanted. Debbie told her she couldn't always do what she wanted because she would wind up in something bad. She then told Terra her grandfather Nolan couldn't fly until he got older. Terra had joy of being able to fly before Nolan. Debbie allowed her to only hover. Debbie held on to Terra's leg to be sure she wouldn't get into any trouble and they founded themselves "hovering" far away from the balcony.
Terra walked in to see an emotional Debbie packing her things getting ready to go to Earth. Terra asked why they were going there and Debbie answered that the war ended but was emotional because Nolan was seriously hurt. Terra comforted Debbie believing that in her family when their "red parts" come out they just heal. The Graysons mourn for Nolan after he passed on from his battle with Thragg. Mark was tasked by Eve to wake up Terra as they were nearing Earth. Mark described to her how people can be alone and scared without their fathers there with them.
Terra watched in horror as Allen was attacked by General Kregg and Lucan, two Viltrumites. On Earth flying with Thragg's children searching for Mark, Terra had a liking for the planet and believed they should go there often instead of fighting. Terra asked Brit's son if he could fly which he said he couldn't but he was super tough that a tank could break over his head. Terra mistook his words and punched him. Terra was left in the care of Debbie while her parents and everyone else took on Robot.
Terra and Eve watched Mark become new emperor of the Viltrumites.
As Terra grew, she was trained in combat by General Kregg and helped her father out with assisting various species in the universe; having a very compassionate heart. She didn't like visiting Earth, due to its limited technology, nor her half brother. As a young adult, its heavily implied she was at least sexually involved with Abraham - son of Duplikate and the Immortal - if not dating him. Eventually she applied to the humanitarian relief program under a fake name to avoid favoritism as Emperor Mark's daughter.
Terra did many good deeds, all the while having the hero mantle InvinciGirl donning an Invincible-themed costume of her own; only it exposed her legs. For a good amount of years, Terra stayed alienated from her parents due to the Viltrumites having a scuffle with the Coalition of Planets over their methods making to Coalition pointless.
On a relaxing day, Terra and Ursaal are now good friends and they debate of Terra's decision of keeping the Coalition of planets, but while they done this, Terra was called home as her mother was about to die of old age; only to be surprised Eve's powers rejuvenated her back into her teenage form, making her immortal.
Terra's worries of the Viltrumites taking the Coalition out of business was finally resolved after the equivalent of a bar brawl between her father and Allen.
Terra spent the next centuries helping resolve conflicts and disasters on other worlds with her parents. Then, 500 years after her father and grandfather had their battle on Earth, Terra was last seen in paradise, sunbathing by the pool of her house with the family' latest dog; while her parents enjoyed reminiscing of former times.
