“ | The Black Lotus are an ancient cult. A secret order whose sole mission is to eradicate the Dark Gift from the face of the world. | „ |
~ Ankara |
The Black Lotus are the overarching antagonists of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
They are an organization that was founded during the fall of the old world in order to fight back against the rise of Dark Ones, humans with supernatural chi abilities known as the Gift. After the Gift ultimately led to the collapse of society and the creation of the Badlands, the Black Lotus continued to hunt Dark Ones for hundreds of years. Although Magnus perverted the Black Lotus' goals and turned them into a villainous organization, they are ultimately fighting for a better world and in the end redeem themselves in order to help the warriors of the Badlands to stop Pilgrim.
History[]
In the distant future, a new form of technology was developed that would be able to draw energy from the meridians in the Earth itself. This led to the creation of a legendary city known as Azra, which served as the center of technological innovation. The energy drawn from the Earth led to the creation of the Gift, dark chi powers that could turn human beings into Dark Ones. In response to this, several individuals formed a cult known as the Black Lotus to work against the existence of Dark Ones. Ultimately their fears were accurate, and the Gift led to the collapse of modern society. In the ruins of the old world, a new society known as the Badlands was formed in the land that used to be the United States. The Black Lotus still continued to operate in both the Badlands and Outlands, killing Dark Ones to prevent the Gift from destroying the new society. However, a group of Dark Ones began rebuilding Azra in the ruins of the original city, hidden away on an island that nobody could reach. The Black Lotus, led by Magnus, eventually found the city and led an invasion onto the island, destroying everything and killing every Dark Ones with only a few survivors. They continued to hunt the surviving children of Azra, with Magnus using Kannin, one of the young Dark Ones who survived the invasion, as a weapon despite the other members of the Black Lotus being against including a Dark One in their forces. Ultimately, Magnus is killed by Kannin and her brother Sunny, putting an end to his perversion of the organization. After this, the group finally redeems itself and works with Kannin and Sunny to stop Pilgrim, a powerful Dark One who wants to destroy the world and build a new Azra in its ruins.
