The Boss is the overarching protagonist of the 2001 video game, Payback and its 2012 sequel, Payback 2. He is an unseen character who is mentioned in some missions by the underbosses given to the protagonist, Travis.

Biography[]

The boss is the leader of the player's gang in Payback and Payback 2. Though he never appears directly or speaks, he is sometimes referenced by the underbosses in the story mode.

In the 1st chapter, the Boss plays a prominent role. He tests the player’s driving skills by having them act as a getaway driver, orders the theft of two taxis, and commands the elimination of both the KKK/2 street gangs (depending on version). He also gets the player to protect him from assassins (though it was a decoy), assigns the player to assist Ron and Trey in a bank robbery and has the player plant a bomb at a rival’s house to get revenge for expanding into their territory and stealing their best men.

In the next few chapters, the boss is mentioned less frequently. In the 2nd chapter, he breaks his crew out of prison, having the player to drive the bus to the prison, collect the prisoners and take them to the safehouse. In the 3rd chapter, he wants to see if the player can keep up with the Russians in a race. In the 4th chapter, he enforces his authority by wanting an apartment building bombed where residents refused to pay protection, using it to make an example to others.

In the final chapters, after the police raid the player’s house and sentence them to life in an island prison, the boss send someone to pick open their cell so the player can escape to rescue the boss' daughter from a kidnapper. After that, in the final chapter the boss has the player do a few more things. He got them to steal an experimental rocket car for his personal collection, gets the player and Nasty Nick to protect him from rival assassins after he bribed Mayor to clamp down on the rival gangs and delivering a truck full of explosives with a timer to wipe out the main rivals to make sure they stay dead.

Personality[]

The boss has no voice lines or physical appearances, which makes him a mysterious figure. His motivations and personality are not clearly defined but based on what the underbosses say, he comes across as a powerful and ruthless leader. He uses violent tactics such as planting explosives to eliminate rivals and those who refuse to pay protection money. His means extends beyond brute force as he can manipulate political figures as seen when he bribes the Mayor to clamp down on the rival gangs gangs. The boss is also shown to be self preserving since he arranged protection against assassination attempts and he also tests the player’s driving skills to see if they are fast enough.

Despite his ruthlessness, manipulation and self preserving nature, the boss has a good side. When the KKK were holding a meeting in central park, he wanted them all dead, which while it is extreme, suggests a strong stance against racism. His loyalty is evident when he breaks his crew out of prison, and later helps the player escape jail so they can rescue his daughter from a kidnapper, showing he does care for those close to him. He also might've been involved in kindly providing the player with a car to race with.

Good Acts[]

  • In Payback 1, he wants the KKK dead, which the player does and kills them.
  • He sprung the jail, leading to the player freeing the lads.
  • He might've been involved in kindly provided the player with a car to race with.
  • He sent someone to pick open the player's jail cell, so the player can escape and have them rescue his daughter from a kidnapper.
  • Gave money to the mayor (though this was merely a bribe so the mayor can clamp down on his rivals)
