“ | I started out with nothin'... Just a kid from the streets, with nothin' to lose. Then, I met Julius, and everything changed. Once I joined the 3rd Street Saints, everything started going my way. I'd run some jobs, get paid, and lady luck was on my side. Now, I have the women, the clothes, the rides... But it's not enough. I want more. I want it all. That's the great thing about this city; it's there for the taking. If you've got what it takes. | „ |

~ Idle in SR4 (male voice 1) |
The Boss, also known as "Playa", is the main protagonist of the Saints Row franchise. The character's overall appearance, gender, and voice can be changed by the player, though the character is canonically male.
Despite being portrayed as antisocial and even psychotic, the protagonist begins to develop a nicer, more caring side as the series progresses. The first two games take place in a different, more realistic storyline than the other games; many events and elements (such as aliens invading) from those games do not co-exist with the first two games.
Background[]
The protagonist was born and raised in Stilwater, contradicting the different voice options from Saints Row 2 onwards, which includes Cockney, Russian, and Southern American accents. These unique voices may give different backgrounds.
For example, the Southern American female voice hints that she was born (and possibly raised) on a farm before coming to Stilwater. If the player's chosen path is with a Caucasian male, his accent will only change to Cockney in Saints Row 2, meaning that his coma must've changed his accent due to neurological damage.
Saints Row[]
Joining the Saints[]
In early 2006, the protagonist gets caught up in a turf war between Stilwater's three rival gangs (The Westside Rollerz wear blue, Los Carnales wear red, and The Vice Kings wear yellow) in Saint's Row, Stilwater. After witnessing the murders of three Rollerz, three Carnales, and two Vice Kings, a third Vice King approaches and points his gun at the protagonist, intending to leave no witnesses.
The Vice King prepares to be shot, and the protagonist is narrowly close to being killed when he is saved by a lieutenant of the Saints named Troy Bradshaw. By Troy's side is the Saints' leader, Julius Little, who refers to the protagonist as "Playa". The Third Street Saints are a new, smaller gang, which is why they both wear purple clothes.
Julius offers a chance to work for the Saints, and Playa accepts, before Julius and Troy leave. The next morning, Playa meets the Saints at their hangout in Saint's Row Church. After being canonized, he is welcomed into the gang. Later on, Julius hosts a meeting in the abandoned church, during which Playa is introduced to the lieutenants of the Saints.
Julius assigns Dexter "Dex" Jackson with the responsibility of taking down the Carnales. Julius then assigns Troy to be in charge of taking down the Vice Kings, but Troy refuses. Johnny Gat, the Saints' lead enforcer, then steps up and accepts the responsibility. Dex asks Julius who is assigned to cover the Rollerz, when Lin enters the room.
Lin, wearing blue pants instead of purple, says that she will take down the Rollerz. Gat asks why she's wearing blue, to which Julius explains that she will be going undercover as a member of the Rollerz. After an unnamed Saint tells Lin "I didn't know the Rollerz pimped hos", Lin whacks him in the mouth, knocking him down.
The meeting shortly ends, and Playa is free to help Gat, Dex, and Lin destroy the Vice Kings, Carnales, and Rollerz, respectively. During the course of the game, Playa helps the Saints in taking down their three rival gangs.
The Vice Kings[]
Playa visits Gat and Dex in Gat's office within the church, and Gat explains that the Vice Kings are named after Benjamin King. Gat states that King is both a professional and a badass, when he gets a phone call from his girlfriend, Aisha, who screams that her sister was kidnapped. Dex states that it's the sixth girl this month, and Gat deducts that the Vice Kings are responsible.
As an initiation, Gat orders Playa to tail the Vice Kings and rescue Aisha's sister. Playa kills several Vice Kings and rescues several women, including Aisha's sister. When Playa later visits Gat in his office, he catches him arguing with Aisha, calling her out for becoming famous and only returning to the Saints when she needs help.
Once they calm down, Aisha explains that she is signed with Kingdom Come Records, which is owned by the Vice Kings, and she is being ripped off and extorted. Gat orders Playa to drive Aisha to a chop shop to be loaded with C4, and to then take her to her work building. Aisha walks in, but before Playa detonates her studio, Aisha runs out the back exit, now legally dead.
Later on, Play visits Gat again, who is packing heat, and tells Playa to load up for an attack on a Vice King stronghold. They both go over and invade it, killing several Vice Kings, but they are captured at gunpoint by two Vice King lieutenants, Tony and his girlfriend, Tonya. After Gat mouths off too much, Tony shoots him in the leg with a shotgun.
Gat then stabs Tony's foot with a switchblade, allowing Playa to whack Tonya to the floor and jump out of a window to escape. Back at the church, Playa is told by Julius that the (true) rumors of Tonya cheating on Tony with every male Vice King except King himself has made him paranoid; Tony only lets her out of his sight when she checks the gang's operations.
Playa kills Tonya's limo driver and takes his place, later following her to her place and knocking her out. Playa then invades the place and kills several Vice Kings, before killing Tony and rescuing a wounded Gat, whilst also finding some upgraded weaponry to steal. Playa later goes to a clothing shop with Dex and Gat, going over Dex's plan to wear yellow clothing - disguised as Vice Kings - and cause chaos in town.
Later on, Dex and Gat devise a plan to blow up some Vice King strongholds. Afterwards, King is betrayed by his lieutenant Warren, and Tonya, along with the rest of the gang. They attack King, but he escapes. Playa arrives at the church to find that Gat has taken the day off, and Julius orders Playa to rescue King, as they were childhood friends. Playa rescues King and destroys Warren's car.
Tonya approaches Warren and shoots him, intending to rule the Vice Kings by herself. Later, King plans to kill Tonya and the rest of his treacherous crew before leaving the city. King, Gat, and Playa go to King's penthouse and kill Tonya, before they all part ways.
Los Carnales[]
Playa visits Dex in his office, and Dex explains that the Carnales are the oldest gang in the city, and practically ran the city until King stepped up. Dex explains that the Carnales are run by brothers Hector and Angelo Lopez, and that their enforcer, Victor, survived a dozen drive-bys at the Vice Kings' hands in the past. Dex vocalizes his intentions to play it safe against them, instead of going guns-blazing.
Dex tasks Playa with going out and destroying a few strongholds that house drug operations, killing a few Carnales members that get in the way. Later, Playa meets Dex and Troy at the petrol station by Freckle Bitch's, a burger joint. Dex explains that he needs a truck that he has found, but cannot get to it, as it is on Carnales turf, so he asks Troy and Playa to get it. Dex says that any drugs in the truck are a bonus - he needs the truck itself.
Once Playa and Troy complete this task, they drive it to Dex's friends Samson, who fixes it up. Whilst the truck is being repaired, Playa sees Dex in his church office, when a Saint hastily enters and says that Angelo and Victor attacked Saint's Row, killing a few Saints. Dex and Playa go out and waste the remaining Carnales footsoldiers. Later on, Playa meets Troy at Samson's garage, and Troy asks Playa why Dex wanted the truck, but Playa shrugs.
Dex then approaches and tells them that the truck is fixed good as new, and that he intends to fill it with a platoon of Saints, and for Playa to drive the truck to the Carnales' production plant for an invasion. Dex makes it clear that they are to take the place over, not to blow it to hell. Playa drives several Saints to the drug labs and they kill the Carnales there, taking the place over to generate new income.
Later on, Dex and Troy take Playa to the gun shop across from the church to buy a sniper rifle. Dex explains that Hector Lopez and his crew are making a deal with the Colombians at the docks. Dex explains that rushing in there and gunning would be suicide, so he tells Playa to wait atop a tall building and wait for the deal, until he can snipe Hector. Playa does this, and kills the Carnales there as well.
Playa later meets Dex and Troy back at the church, and Dex explains that Manuel Orejuela is head of the Colombian gang. Dex tasks Playa with driving them to a strip club and waiting for Manuel. However, Victor appears in his truck and attacks the two Saints, so Playa and Dex bolt. Back at the church, Julius scolds Dex for going to meet the Colombians without his permission, when Carnales attack the church.
Playa, Julius, Troy, and Dex kill the Carnales, and Playa kills Victor. Later on, Julius goes and makes a deal with Manuel. In the church, Dex tells Troy and Playa that Manuel wants his drugs back that the police siezed from the deal, where Playa killed Hector. If they do that, Manuel will work with the Saints exclusively. Troy suggests blowing a hole in the evidence chamber and stealing the drugs back that way, greatly lowering the body count.
Julius, Troy, Dex, and Playa meet Manuel in a strip club, but Angelo bursts in with an AK and kills an unnamed Saint before driving away. As payment for the Saints' generosity, Manuel tells Julius where Angelo lives, but asks not to hurt Angelo's girlfriend. Dex and Playa go there and kill Angelo's guards, but Angelo escapes in his car. Playa and Dex give chase, but Angelo escapes.
Some time later, Playa is walking around Saint's Row when Dex drives up and says that Angelo is boarding a private plane, which they need to destroy before he can leave the city and rebuild. Once Playa drives Dex there, Dex takes the wheel and Playa takes the AK, gunning down Carnales guard, before using an RPG to blow up Angelo and his plane. Dex and Playa look at the wreckage when Luz, Angelo's girlfriend arrives in her car; Angelo told her to leave with him.
Dex and Playa let her live so she can go back to Manuel, as they'd both had feelings for each other. Dex, now fully impressed with Playa, leaves.
The Westside Rollerz[]
Playa goes to Rollerz turf and spies on Lin talking with two male Rollerz. When the Rollerz leave, Playa reveals himself. Lin tells Playa that the Rollerz have a shipment of high-performance cars is coming in, and she tells Playa to steal it before it reaches its destination. Playa is then to take it to Samson to load it up with explosives, and then to get the truck back on the road and finish its delivery.
Later on, Playa meets Lin in a club and they dance as they talk; Lin explains that the rigged cars will explode once at a high enough temperature. Lin tells Playa that there's a race in Chinatown, so Troy meets Playa and the two Saints go to the race and beat the Rollerz, whose cars eventually blow up and kill them. Playa later meets Lin in a restaurant, and Lin explains that Joseph Price calls the shots in the Rollerz.
She says that Price's best friend is a mechanic named Donnie, so Lin orders Playa to wreck Donnie's shop, but that she will arrive just in time to save Donnie, allowing him to put in a good word for her. Playa goes and wrecks Donnie's shop, killing several Rollerz as well. Once the task is complete, Lin arrives in her car and drvies Donnie away. Later on, Playa goes to the headquarters of the Rollerz - Price's uncle's house.
Price's uncle, named Mr. Sharp, is talking with Price in his living room, which Playa spies on from outside a window. Lin and Donnie arrive, and Donnie brings up the topic of a shipment, but Sharp diverts the topic due to Lin's presence. Playa finds the convoy and defends the trucks, killing the attacking Rollerz, before returning to Sharp's house. Soon after, Donnie, who is smoking a spliff, is sat with Lin, when Sharp and Price return after hearing of their convoy.
Price and Donnie tell Sharp that it was the Saints, so Lin offers to help. Later on, Price and Sharp are at Sharp's house when Donnie and Lin arrive with a plan to steal specific cars for their parts. Lin then phones Playa with the task of finding these cars before the Rollerz do. Later on, Donnie calls Price and informs him of the second time that the Saints screwed the Rollerz.
Due to only Price, Sharp, Donnie, and Lin knowing of their plans, Sharp deducts that Lin has been selling them out to the Saints. Feeling that Price is too attached to Donnie, Sharp offers to go to Donnie and explain that Lin is a traitor. Some time later, Playa and Julius are hanging in the church, with Julius complimenting Playa on account of Lin's positive feedback. Playa then suddenly gets a phonecall by Lin; she says to meet at the poolhall.
On the other end of the phone, Lin is seen in the back room of the poolhall tied to a chair, with Sharp holding the phone to Lin's face, before he hangs up. Lin then tells Sharp to fuck himself, so he slaps her. Meanwhile, Playa drives to the poolhall. Playa is then ambushed by several Rollerz, but manages to shoot and kill them all, before reaching the room where Lin is tied up. When untying Lin, a Roller comes from behind and whacks Playa with a bat.
As Sharp reveals himself, police sirens are heard, before Playa is whacked a second time and knocked out. A short while later, Playa and Lin wake up in the boot of Lin's car, when Sharp opens it to reveal Donnie and himself. Lin hastily tries to explain to Donnie, but Sharp shoots her twice in the arm with his revolver, before closing the boot again. Donnie becomes enraged, but Sharp says that Lin is in the Saints, not the Rollerz.
When Donnie storms off and drives away, Sharp pushes Lin's car into the river. In the sinking car, Lin helps Playa reach her lighter to burn off their rope. Lin saves Playa's life, who is unable to return the favour; Playa swims to the surface and finds some Rollerz guns, before finding and massacring Sharp and his men. Some time later, Playa returns to the church and finds Julius, who informs that Lin's body was found in the river.
Julius sympathises and says that Playa did everything possible to try and save Lin, but Troy interrupts with information that Rollerz are heading to the church for an attack. Playa drives Julius to the highway, in order to hit the Rollerz first. They then switch seats, and Playa shoots and destroys the Rollerz cars, except the car of Price, who escapes. A while later, Playa gets a phonecall from Price, who says where to meet him.
Playa goes to the location, but sees Price speeding with a truck, and Playa jumps out of the way before being run over. Playa then drives towards Price's truck and chases him onto the highway, shooting his truck and blowing it up. A minute later, Playa approaches the wreckage and retrieves Price's car keys from his corpse. Julius then rings Playa and says that he heard the explosion, before saying he'll look into who the Rollerz were selling to.
The Epilogue[]
Afterwards, Playa is promoted to second-in-command by Julius. However, shortly afterwards, Julius is arrested. Playa is then contacted and blackmailed by Police Chief Richard Monroe, who threatens to kill Julius unless Playa does some "community service" for him. Playa kills Mayor Marshall Winslow, but gets tired of Monroe's blackmailing, and kills him at Winslow's funeral with help from Gat and Dex.
After Monroe's death, Playa is contacted by Alderman Richard Hughes, who thanks Playa for killing Winslow and Monroe, as it helped him win the mayoral election. With the public's backing, Richard reveals he will re-develop the Saint's Row District. Before Richard can have Playa killed by his security guards, the boat they are on is destroyed by a bomb, killing Hughes and his guards, and putting Playa into a coma.
Saints Row 2[]
Reviving the Saints[]
In 2011, five years after the boat explosion, Playa awakens in the infirmary of Stilwater Penitentiary, a small prison-island off the coast of Stilwater. With the help of a young inmate named Carlos Mendoza, he escapes the prison and returns to a much different-looking Stilwater, which is now under control of the Ultor Corporation.
Playa then discovers that the Saints have all but fallen apart since the boat explosion, and that three new gangs have moved into Stilwater; The Brotherhood wear red, The Ronin wear yellow, and The Sons of Samedi wear green. After arriving at a local bar, Playa watches the news and discovers that Johnny is facing death row for 387 counts of first-degree murder, with his trial set to conclude soon.
Playa breaks into the courtroom and rescues Johnny, taking him to his girlfriend Aisha's house, where they discuss their plans on how to revive the Saints. After learning that the church has been turned into a tourist trap by Ultor, he and Johnny take over an underground mission house and establish it as their new headquarters, later seeking to recruite lieutenants for the Saints.
Carlos Mendoza, Pierce Washington, and Shaundi are recruited as lieutenants. Playa then officially becomes the new leader of the Saints, and is then referred to as "Boss" by the rest of the gang, as the Boss keeps his (or her) name unknown.

Saints Row The Third[]
With the destruction of the Saints' three rival gangs, the deaths of Julius Little and Dane Vogel, and the disappearance of Dex, the Protagonist and his Saints had since partnered up with Ultor, becoming a household name across the city. However, in 2014, they were arrested after a failed bank robbery, but were bailed out by Phillipe Loren and taken to the city of Steelport on his private jet.
With the Boss, Gat, and Shaundi held captive, Phillipe Loren explains that the bank they robbed was his, and demands they turn over 66% of their assets in return for their lives. After Gat blatantly refuses, a skirmish leads to Shaundi and the Boss escaping the jet via parachute.
In the chaos, Gat is abuducted by Zinyak while attempting to commandeer the plane back to Stilwater. Shaundi and the Boss arrive in Steelport, make new allies and enemies, and eventually take over the city, making it the Saints' secondary home.
Saints Row 4[]
In the first mission, set some time after The Third, the Saints are now an anti-terrorist organisation. The Boss, Pierce, and Shaundi meet MI-6 agent Asha Odekar near Cyrus Temple's base so to stop him from launching a nuke on Washington. The Boss eventually kills Temple, but the latter still manages to launch the nuke, so he selflessly climbs onto the missile as it launches and rips out its key components.
He then jumps off as the nuke explodes in the sky, and falls to his death, only to land unharmed in the Oval Office and become US President. After a five-year reign, the Zin Empire invades and eventually destroys Earth. However, before Earth is destroyed, the Boss and his key allies make it onto a space shuttle and survive in space.
Gat Out of Hell[]
At some point after Zinyak is defeated, the Saints celebrate Kinzie's birthday in the shuttle. During the party, the Boss is dragged into Hell through a magic portal by Satan, so Johnny and Kinzie go out to rescue him.

Trivia[]
Saints Row[]
- Julius calling him "Playa" may refer to the person playing the game. "Playa" is also street-gang slang, similar to "Gangsta".
- He only talks four seperate times in the first game; the last cutscene of the Rollerz mission strand, the last cutscene of the Carnales mission strand, the second-to-last cutscene of the Vice Kings mission strand, and the ending cutscene.
- This makes Julius, Dex, Luz, Gat, Ben, Hughes, and Hughes' bodyguards the only characters to hear him speak in the first game.
Saints Row 2[]
- The Boss has the most player-customisation freedom in Saints Row 2.
- Although the player can choose an Asian Boss in Saints Row 2 (as they could in Saints Row), there is no Asian voice preset for either gender, so they'll just have the African-American voice.
- A running joke in Saints Row 2 is that Gat, Aisha, and Julius fail to notice that he underwent surgery to treat his explosion wounds, often just asking him "Did you do something with your hair?"
- In Saints Row 2, he is a bit taller than most characters, whilst he is of more average height in all other games. This is especially obvious when stood beside Carlos or Shaundi, as they are the shortest Saints in Saints Row 2.
Saints Row The Third[]
- By the end of the prologue, he is the only Saint left from the first game.
- The white female protagonist admits during "Three Way" that she is in a coed curling team.
- In the mission "The Ho Boat", the protagonist makes a comment about the various BDSM objects reminding them of their freshman dorm (this excludes male voice 3 protagonist). This also hints at some form of higher education.
- Depending on voice set, a male protagonist harbours a crush; the Caucasian-American protagonist reveals his crush on Kinzie in "STAG Film", whilst the African-American Protagonist reveals his crush on Shaundi in "Party Time". The female Russian protagonist is in love with Pierce.
General[]
- When he was six, he was into robots.
- He'd visited a local massage parlor since junior-high (age 16 or 17).
- The Latina Boss is attracted to Gat, and is a fan of the band Operation Fear Strike.
- He holds his handguns sideways in Saints Row, upright in Saints Row 2, and with both hands in the following games.
- He is like the Vault Dweller and the Chosen One from Fallout, in that he is canonically male, but the player may still choose their gender.
- As seen with his conversations with Shaundi and Kinzie in Saints Row 2 and The Third respectively, he has very limited knowledge on the subject of computer technology.
- In the case that the Protagonist is an African-American male, he retains the same voice actor in all five games.
- In the case that the Protagonist is a Caucasian male, he is a Stilwater-born American, but his accent changed to Cockney due to trauma during his coma. Whether he retains this accent, or gets his North American one back, is dependant on the player when playing The Third.
- Despite this, he still talks with an American accent in the prologue of The Third.
- He can only consume foodstuffs during gameplay in the first two games.
- In Saints Row, he can smoke four different doses of cannabis, four alcoholic beverages, and four items from the Freckle Bitch's menu. In Saints Row 2, he can still order from Freckle Bitch's (along with three new restaurants with different foods of the same uses), but can now only use one booze (40 oz.) and drug (blunt).
- Food and drink replenishes health, drugs increase robustness (damage threshold), and booze increases melee damage. The efficiency of these properties depends on the size (and therefore the price) of the items.
