The Doctor is the main protagonist of the Doctor Who web animation Scream of the Shalka, and the short story Feast of the Stone. This ninth, melancholic incarnation met a barmaid Alison Cheney in the small Lancashire town of Lannet, and fought to save the world from the Shalka.
He was voiced by Richard E. Grant.

While the past of this incarnation is mysterious, it is implied that the Doctor entered a retirement with a companion, however a great threat led to her death, and his old enemy the Master aided him in defeating it, which led to his body's destruction. In return for his aid, the Doctor stored the Master's mind in a robotic body made of TARDIS materials, and they would be directed by the Time Lords.

This incarnation of the Doctor was serious, and often angry, but wasn't averse to the odd bit of fun while having the bearing of an aristocrat. He was angry and reluctant to listen to the mysterious force that ordered him around time and space. Unlike previous incarnations, the Ninth Doctor was reluctant to take Alison on as a companion due to the untimely passing of his previous companion. While brave and heroic, the Doctor was more reluctant to get involved in the events taking place in Lancashire.
He kept an android version of the Master in his TARDIS, who was unable to leave the TARDIS. He was willing to turn the Master off and back on again without hesitation, and was unable to grasp how that might horrify Alison, as it not only showed what he will do to achieve his goals if he believes it necessary, but also raised the possibility that he might do something similar to her if he believed it necessary.
Habits and quirks[]
The Ninth Doctor drank alcohol. He carried an inhaler, which he called his "huffer". He carried a mobile phone, taken from a charging cradle hidden behind the telephone panel in the TARDIS' police box shell. Shaped like the TARDIS, the phone was in fact part of the TARDIS itself. The Doctor displayed a fondness for singing and had a repertoire of showtunes. He was friends with Andy Warhol, who wanted to paint a picture of him and his eight previous incarnations. He kept a signed manuscript copy of Hamlet in his TARDIS.

He wore the sombre black tailcoat of an Edwardian gentleman under a heavy cape, with a Keble College scarf thrown over one shoulder.

- According to DWM 464, the Doctor had been a lover to his former companion, the daughter of the Lord President and he had retired to Gallifrey. After some time, an unknown alien had invaded and killed all Time Lords. All except the Doctor's companion promptly retreated to the Matrix. The Doctor and the Master "sent the aliens packing", destroying the Master's final form in the process causing the Doctor to construct an android body confined to his TARDIS. The Time Lords use their power to "send the Doctor off to solve the most dangerous problems in the universe".
- When he was created, this Doctor was intended to be the official Ninth Doctor, however the revival of the televised series, starring Christopher Eccleston led to this Doctor being discontinued.
- Many years later, this version of the Doctor would cameo in live-action in a montage of previous incarnations in Rogue.
- When Scream of the Shalka was intended to be the main continuation of Doctor Who, several pieces of media foreshadowed it, such as the later Eighth Doctor Adventures novels, which feature cameos from the Master in his Shalka form, but when the TV show was announced, the Shalka Doctor would be obliquely referenced as one possible future, with the Eighth Doctor being described as having three ninth incarnations. The novella Fallen Gods was written with the possibility of leading into the Eighth Doctor regenerating into the Shalka Doctor.
- Coincidentally, a new version of the Doctor created for the novella The Cabinet of Light and the subsequent Time Hunter spin-off series heavily resembles this Doctor, to which the author clarified he had no idea of there being a new Doctor in the works.
