~ "HOW TO PLAY" story screen |
The unnamed Explorer Student, also simply referred to as the Protagonist and the Player, is the main protagonist of the Baldi's Basics series.
He is one of Baldimore's students, who wants to retrieve his unnamed friend's seven lost notebooks while avoiding his teacher and other obstacles. However, after reaching the final exit and heading to Baldi's office in the original game, the Explorer Student instead encounters a corrupted entity, Null, who tells him to destroy the game.

Personality[]
The Explorer Student is excellent at quick mental subjects such as addition and subtraction in math problems, when answering into his friend's notebooks (or entering numbers into the Math Machine by then). However, he failed to solve more complex problems either because those problems are genuinely impossible, or he simply cannot understand how to solve them because his teacher Baldi can manipulate or distort the math problems (in other words that he is under Null's mind control).
The Explorer Student's morality can be shaped through his actions—for example, while it is not necessary to cut Playtime's jump rope (which is considered a rude action but temporarily thwarts her being an obstacle), he could engage in such an action without hesitation. Given that the Safety Scissors has no other friendly uses, it could be implied that he would always grab and use them for his purpose of cutting Playtime's jump rope, or some other similarly malicious action such as cutting 1st Prize's wiring. However, performing such an action grants him extra time to evade Baldi, resulting in a greater chance of survival, albeit at the cost of someone else. Therefore, it can assume that everything questionable that the Explorer Student does or may do is in the spirit of evading Baldi and not being a bully.
Although perhaps the Explorer Student is only doing it for the items he can obtain, he goes camping with Baldi, so it seems that he likes to go camping. He seem to lack many of the human characteristics that would typically make such a scenario the original Schoolhouse and the Super Schoolhouse impossible, such as fear or shock that would typically faze any other person too much to engage in Baldi's scenario efficiently enough to survive.
It can also assume that the Explorer Student is not very assertive or strong, as he is unable to circumvent hazards that other characters bring such being stuck jumping rope with Playtime, failing to walk past It's a Bully without any items, being caught breaking the school rules by Principal of the Thing, being pushed with ease by Gotta Sweep or 1st Prize, getting caught in Beans' gum, slipping on a 'Nana Peel, and told to get to Mrs. Pomp's classroom without being late. Furthermore, his generosity and lack of assertiveness is shown by the fact that he was willing to stay in school after hours.
Despite this, there are hints that he is actually a very altruistic and loyal student. As shown when he took all of his friend's notebooks and gave them to him without any reward, even though he had gone through serious danger and potential death.
The Explorer Student also seems to be a very curious student, because he managed to discover all the secrets in Classic Remastered, despite Null's warnings not to continue playing. He also appears to be a prankster, because according to NINENINE secret, on April 17, 2019, he prank called a distant relative of a character named “Lord Bumbo.”
Biography[]
NOTE: The "early life" section contains some speculation, as much of the series' storyline has not been confirmed.
Early Life[]
The Explorer Student was most likely born on June 3rd of an unknown year to his unnamed parents. He and his family live in the city of Baltimore, Maryland.
In 1999, he was enrolled as a student at a school building called Schoolhouse and Super Schoolhouse. During his first entry to the school, he met an unnamed friend and the friend learned about the school from him. In his first lesson, he met his teacher who served as the head teacher and also the math teacher, Professor Baldimore. During the lesson, the Explorer Student was described as a very smart student and could answer the math questions made by his teacher. The teacher saw his very smart student and he gave him an A grade.
During recess, he and his friend met a student named Playtime who invited him to play jump rope, seeing that he would play with her by jumping rope with his friend. In addition, the friend told him that after the school closed if there were students who left their books behind, their teacher Baldi would secretly save the math problems using the You Can Think Pad, then he would stand in front of the exit if one of the students would be greeted by the Professor. The Explorer Student heard what his friend said and had to be careful.
The school is out, but the friend accidentally left his seven notebooks in the school, and he couldn't take them because he was busy for "eating practice", so he asked his friend for help. The Explorer Student had to take his seven notebooks at school. Hearing his friend who left his seven notebooks behind, the Explorer Student would feel nervous about it, because his teacher liked to stand in front of the exit and save some math problems in his friend's notebook.
Classic[]
When the Explorer Student arrived at school, he was greeted by his teacher Baldi for coming to school. He then went to get the first notebook, then answered questions using the You Can Think Pad to get them back. After the Explorer Student answered three questions correctly in the first notebook, he would get a quarter from his teacher Baldi who could help him by buying items at the vending machine on the way later. However, after he answering the third impossible question in the second notebook incorrectly which could not be avoided, Baldi suddenly got angry and would start chasing him relentlessly. Seeing that, the Explorer Student had to escape from his teacher to get his friend's seven notebooks in various classes.
After the Explorer Student successfully reaches the exit and escapes from his teacher Baldi, he suddenly hears a mysterious voice that will congratulate him, but he tells him to do worse because he needs something the next day. The Explorer Student listens to him and will return to his teacher Baldi's school the next day. The next day, after answering every question wrong in all seven notebooks, the Explorer Student is transported to a short hallway of his teacher Baldi's office, who tells him to go to the office for repairs. Instead of meeting his teacher and entering the office, he is met by the red-shirted Entity, accompanied by Baldi with his distorted and stretched sprite.
As the Explorer Student approaches the Entity, he is congratulated by the Entity for finding him in this office and he warns him to never tell anyone about this game, to close it, destroy it, and never play it again. As the Entity finishes his speech, the game crashes and the Explorer Student is transported back to his home.
Plus[]
After the events of the original game, when the Explorer Student enters the school, he is greeted by his teacher Baldi standing in front of the elevator and inviting him to a game of hide and seek. During this time, the Explorer Student must find classrooms, each of which contains a notebook. Once his "teacher" Baldi finishes his countdown, he will start chasing him, but his teacher will strangely get angry for an unknown reason. After successfully collecting all the notebooks in the various classrooms, all the elevators open, where the Explorer Student must escape by going through all the elevators depending on the floor he is on while trying to avoid his teacher Baldi to complete his challenge. During his journey, he meets Johnny, the store manager, where he can buy items in his store, which he can use to help him on his journey.
After going through all the floors, the Explorer Student will meet his teacher Baldi in his office, where he will sing a song while dancing and congratulate him for completing all five floors. After the song ends, everything around him suddenly glitches and distorts, with his teacher doing faster movements, and he is taken back outside the school, possibly to his home.

NULL Style[]
After the player defeating any style with all Fun Settings enabled. The Explorer Student will face Null in NULL Style, who has make Null angry at him for not listening to what he says. He must collect all seven notebooks and go to the four exits as usual and save his world by glitching (but the school will not turn red), while avoiding Null, who is very fast and can break through windows to catch him. After he collects all the notebooks and is about to escape from the school, Null closes the last exit, something that should not happen leaving the game broken. But the Explorer Student does not give up, he grabs nearby objects and throws them at Null to try to defeat him once and for all. After the Explorer Student throws 10 hits at Null, he is teleported to Mystman12's office.
In the office, the Explorer Student reads a message from the game developer, which contains some information on where the Baldi's Basics story is going. After the book is closed, Null appears in the office. He then tells him that what is written in the message is a lie (and tries to glitch the game out to crash it) then Null tries to tell the Explorer Student something else. But he intensely glitches out and then disappears while screaming in pain. Nothing happens after this, so the Explorer Student will leave the office to return to his home and directly managed to save the world.
New Secret Endings[]
After the NULL Style is defeated, when the Explorer Student returns to Baldi's Schoolhouse, he can be accessed in 3 new secret endings after the Null is defeated and the Explorer Student finally feels at peace:
- In Classic Style, Baldi gives the Explorer Student some advice on subtraction, teaching him about negative numbers.
- In Party Style, Baldi lets him listen to some music he made, as a surprise.
- In the Demo Style, after entering Baldi's Basement, Baldi can be seen in the shrink machine and lets the Explorer Student help him test it out. However, its fails, and Baldi says the machine still needs a few tweaks.
- None of these encounters end the game, instead taking the Explorer Student back to his home (or off-screen as he returns upstairs from Baldi's basement) as usual.
- It should be noted during these three secret endings that Baldi will not make an attempt to try to harm him. In fact, he appears quite friendly.
