Look, I was just doing my laundry! You're the one who came and told me that I'm a superhero! And now you're saying, what you don't want me to be?! Well guess what?! I! Am! The Flash...And I can save Everyone! NOBODY DIES!!
~ Barry Allen to Flash

Bartholomew Henry "Barry" Allen, also known as The Flash, is the titular deuteragonist of the 2023 DC Extended Universe film The Flash.

He is an alternate 2013 past version of Barry Allen, who accidentally encountered him after his original self created the Flashpoint, in an attempt to go back in time to save his mother.

Having not acquired his powers just yet, his original self makes him into a superhero and has him assist him in restoring his original timeline. Along the way, he would meet Batman and Supergirl, befriending them in the process.

Like his normal counterpart, he was portrayed by Ezra Miller.

History[]

Barry Allen is a Flash who, unlike his mainstream counterpart, did not lose his parents to a murder and a miscarriage of justice. He lived a happy life and rarely took anything seriously, and was jubilant when he was accosted by Barry Allen from the future, who had traveled back in time to visit his parents and was distraught to see another version of himself about to walk through the door. He discreetly manages to enter the house with Barry, and he explains to him that he is a superhero that has super speed.

When Flash realizes that it is the day that he gets his powers and notices a thunderstorm forming outside, he brings Barry to Central City Police Department so that he can be in the moment where he got his powers. However, in forcing Barry to get struck by lightning, he gets struck by lightning as well, and ends up losing his powers.

Barry becomes excited when he learns about his new powers, and speeds around the city, ending up burning his clothes off and causing destruction. When he returns, Flash tells Barry about friction, and the next day, he gives him his suit so he can wear something while speeding. That day, the two of them witness a broadcast by General Zod, who is preparing to invade Earth. At this point, Flash decides to try and form the Justice League, but learns that Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Aquaman don't exist in this world.

The two Barrys travel to Wayne Manor, hoping to find Batman, and end up being attacked by an older version of him that retired from crimefighting, due to the Gotham in this timeline now being an extremely safe city. After being defeated by the superhuman Barry Allen, who merely dodged all of his attacks, they tell him about their situation, but fail to convince him to help him reform the Justice League.

Barry from the future leads his past self to a sealed hole in the ground, and tells him to phase through it so he can unlock it. He becomes fascinated by the Batcave, and ends up relaxing in the Batmobile while future Barry uses the Batmobile to try and find traces of Superman's existence, since Superman is the one that is supposed to defeat Zod. After transmitting a message from the computer to one of Batman's laptops, he ends up convincing him to get out of retirement and help them. When future Barry locates a Kryptonian pod in Siberia using the Batcomputer, Batman then flies them to Russia.

They infiltrate the base where they suspect the Russians are holding Superman captive, but past Barry accidentally alerts the enemies to their location. Barry is initially able to protect his de-powered future self from being hit by bullets, but Batman eventually arrives to save them when there became too many enemies. They find a pod, but end up finding Kara Zor-El instead of Superman. After going outside, they are cornered by Russians, but Kara unexpectedly saves them.

Back at Wayne Manor, Kara asks the two Barrys about what has happened. She learns that they were looking for Kal-El and that Zod was preparing to invade Earth. When she tries to go after him and finding that she is too weak to get up, Barry from the future told his past self to carry her to the roof so she can be exposed to the sun to regenerate her powers. While past Barry asks her to help them protect Earth from Zod, she tells him that she is not convinced humans are worth saving due to what she has experienced, and left.

After past Barry returns with Kara gone, Batman begins reconstructing the scenario where the future Barry got his powers, and at his request, strikes him with electricity. After being severely injured, Barry insists that Batman do it again, but Kara returns and flies Barry into the clouds for him to be struck by lightning. His past self becomes worried to see him unconscious, but is happy when he finds that he was still alive and now has access to the Speed Force.

With two Flashes, a Supergirl, and a Batman, future Barry talks about how the Justice League has been reassembled, even if they were still short several members. The group flies back to the Siberian camp where they found Supergirl, with past Barry recording Supergirl flying alongside them until being interrupted by his future self. As soon as they enter the battle zone, they are attacked by Russians who do not realize they are now on their side. The speedsters descend and work together to fight Zod's forces, with Batman attacking from the air and Supergirl engaging Zod. When Batman is shot out of the sky and Supergirl is killed, past Barry uses the Speed Force in order to rewind time, with future Barry chasing after him.

The two Barrys fail to save Batman and Supergirl, leading the past Barry to try to rewind time again. This time, future Barry does not join him, and tries to tell his past self that they are in an inevitable intersection, but he won't listen, and tries to save them several times on his own and insults Barry for doing nothing. He breaks down at his future self, telling him that he made him become a superhero, and now he is being callous by trying to make him stop. However, Barry points out that not every problem has a solution, which reminds the two of them of their mother, who once told them this as a child when they had a math problem on a homework assignment that had an infinite number of solutions.

Eventually, the dark speedster that knocked Barry out of the Speed Force and made him land back in 2013 came and revealed himself to be a much older version of the 2013 Barry, having been mutated beyond recognition and gone mad. He claimed that he had nearly found a way to save everyone, but seeing several universes colliding, both Barrys see that the Dark Flash must be stopped. Dark Flash attempts to kill Barry, but his past self takes the blow for him, killing himself and preventing Dark Flash from ever existing.

Trivia[]

  • It is unexplained how this Barry Allen has the same memory of being told that not every problem has a solution by his mother when their lives unfolded so differently.
  • This Flash comes from the same universe as the Burtonverse, which was reused for this film.
  • its implied he uses pot frequently, which would heavily explain Barry's inability to focus, take things seriously and shares his apartment with other similarly confuse people.
