Gasman (real name, John) is the main protagonist of The Dark Days.
Gasman is the silent main character in The Dark Days, throughout the entire series he does not speak or make any sound. He first appears drawing zombies toward his home and detonating a car bomb using the code "666." His path intersects with Jake and the group when he arrives just in time to save them upon their arrival in his town.
Appearance[]
The Gasman is dressed in tactical gear. The outfit features a gas mask over a dark uniform, a black tactical vest outfitted with utility pouches for carrying supplies or ammunition and a radio with an antenna is attached to the gear.
Personality[]
Gasman is a quiet individual who relies on actions rather than words to communicate. His silence shows his survival oriented mindset. He is very loyal to his friends, protecting those he cares about, especially Jake, even when he was infected.Despite his reserved nature, Gasman showcases a deep sense of empathy and trust through his actions. While he rarely expresses emotions because he rarely ever takes off the gas mask, key moments such as his willingness to let Hope remove his helmet reveal a well more vulnerable and human side.
History[]
Gasman's arc is defined by a series of conflicts. Early in the story, he encounters and kills a Runner with difficulty, demonstrating his capability to adapt under pressure. Later, with assistance from Boot, he successfully executes a mission to rescue Jake and Harry from a zombie horde led by the ghost of Tony. The group temporarily expands when Sarah and her father join, but the team suffers a loss when Tony reappears, leading to Sara's father's death. This event triggers a forced retreat to the Wastelands, where Gasman and the group are captured by the KOV. Gasman is exiled into the Wastelands but uses survival strategies and forges alliances with two new friends, eventually returning to participate in the KOV stronghold battle. During this operation, Gasman plays a support role, securing Hope's safety by extracting her while unconscious and providing tactical assistance during the conflict. In Season 3, it's revealed that Gasman not only remembers how to read and write, but his real name is John and he thinks his nickname Gasman is stupid and no matter what happens to Jake, who has been suffering from the infection, Gasman tells him he is on Jake's side. Plus, it seems he and Hope have feelings for one another, as Gasman nearly allowed her to remove his helmet.
