~ The Judge to the player after killing the Batter |
Pablo, more commonly known as The Judge, is the deuteragonist and the optional final antagonist of the indie RPG game OFF, created by Mortis Ghost in 2008.
He's a cryptic feline of odd appearance who's the Guardian of Zone 0 and will constantly appear during the Batter's journey to help him complete his mission. However near the end of the game he confronts the Batter for all his horrible deeds and lets the player decide whether to join him or not.
He was voiced by John Vattic.
Appearance[]
The Judge is a white-furred cat with a disproportionately large head and a constant wide grin with prominent teeth that extends to his cheeks. Despite what someone may think of him because of his odd appearance, he moves, sounds and acts like a normal house cat. He's always seen with his trademark smile in his avatar, and makes a purring sound when spoken to.
Personality[]
The Judge could be described as an enigmatic and almost omniscient being. He possesses great knowledge on multiple puzzles the Batter can find in his journey, he's the one who teaches him the basics of combat and also knows about the existence of the Add-Ons and the Player. He speaks in a very verbose and poetic manner.
At first he expresses support of the Batter's mission to purify the world, believing it to be extremely sacred and offering his teachings to the Batter and the Player in order to aid them. By the end of the game, however, he's learned what the Batter's true goal is and deeply regrets ever supporting him, chastising the Batter for his deluded, corrupt nature and the Player for helping him all this time. Despite this, he offers the Player a last chance to atone for both of their foolishness by helping him kill the Batter. The Judge acknowledges that this action is meaningless since the world is already destroyed beyond repair, but he simply wants to spite the Batter by not allowing him to complete his mission fully.
Biography[]
Zone 0[]
When a creature of unknown origins called the Batter manifest itself in the reality of OFF, he's assigned to an entity existing outside the world of OFF to help him in his mission to purify the world, this being the Puppeteer.
The Batter appears in an unknown place and soon enough he encounters a weird-looking feline who calls himself the Judge. At first the Judge thinks the Batter is a mere figment of his imagination since no other beings except himself live inside Zone 0 but once the Batter proves to be real, the Judge will ask the name of the Puppeteer controlling the Batter.
The Batter asks the Judge in hopes of getting his services, in which he accepts and has a quick tutorial with the Batter to teach him about the basics of the rules in combat and how to solve Puzzles.
Zones 1 & 2[]
During the rest of the game, he will appear repeatedly in the following Zones, especially in Zone 2. In Zone 1 he will inform the Batter and the Player about the Add-Ons, which are metaphysical creatures that will help him during his mission of purifying the world.
In Zone 2, he's constantly seen trying to find his brother Valerie, who's appear to be missing for some time. Eventually the Judge finds Valerie in the roof of the library and tries to convince him of going back with him, when Valerie says he's the Guardian of Zone 2, the Judge thinks he's delusional and tries to snap him out it. Only to be horrified to know the truth that, Valerie's body was being used by Japhet who was inside him like a parasite. After Japhet's defeat and the purification of Zone 2, the Judge stays in the roof of Zone 2 mourning the loss of his brother, and being still in denial of his death, this being the main reason of why he's absent during the entirety of Zone 3 and why Zacharie temporarily replaces him.
The Room[]
He appears one last time in The Room right at the climax of the game, where the Player is offered to join the Judge and kill the Batter, or refuse and fight him. the default, standard ending assumes that the Player declines the offer, this causes the Judge to be the final boss of the game, upon the Judge's defeat, the Batter is free to proceed to the switch and flip it into the "OFF" position. Flicking this will fade the screen to black, followed by a message box informing the Player that "The switch is now on OFF". After this, the credits roll.
If the Player accepts the offer, they will face the Batter in battle, where his appearance will change, taking on a monstrous appearance (although this is confirmed to not be a specific physical alteration but as a change in perspective). When the Batter is defeated and killed, the Judge states that even though this final stand was ultimately futile and almost the entire world is still gone, he prefers this over allowing the Batter to win.
He is last seen during the credits of the game, traversing the railway of the purified Zone 1.

Trivia[]
- According to Mortis Ghost, the Judge was inspired by the cat his roommates had who's name was "Madame le Judge" which in English translates to "Madame Judge" which was the direct inspiration for Pablo's character.
- During the Tutorial, if the Judge was defeated he would award the Player with 720 exp and 200 credits, although this was scrapped for unknown reasons.
- In Zone 3 he's replaced by Zacharie, who's wearing a Cat mask and makes a "meow' noise instead of his usual laugh when spoken to.
