Absolute power is an illusion, it fades away just when you need it the most. True power hides... until it is ready to strike.
~ The Master

Ada, better known as The Master, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Juliet Chau) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.

She is the leader of the Abbot Monastery, being dedicated to locating Dark Ones and abducting them so that they can be trained in secret and keep their Gift separated from the rest of the world. While she often goes to extreme methods to achieve her goals, she ultimately is fighting to protect the world from the threat that the Gift can pose, and wants to put an end to dangerous figures such as Pilgrim.

She was portrayed by Chipo Chung.

Appearance[]

The Master in the realm between life and death.

The Master is stated by Bajie to be over one-hundred years old, but despite this due to her longevity she still appears to be middle-aged. She wears the standard robes of the other Abbots in the Abbot Monastery, although her hair is kept in a loop formation to signify her role as the Master. After being killed by M.K., she appears in the realm between life and death to Sunny in order to warn him of a threat to the world. While in this realm, she wore a different outfit, consisting of large white robes with a red stripe.

Personality[]

In general, the Master has the desire to protect the world, primarily from the danger that Dark Ones can pose to both themselves and others. She is extreme in her methods of achieving this goal, forcefully abducting children and teenagers who develop the Gift and taking them to the Monastery against their will. That being said, once they are actually at the Monastery the Master does try to be caring towards the novices, teaching them on how to control the Gift and become more powerful. However, if someone attempts to run from the Monastery she has her Abbots put them into a coma, not willing to let the Gift become loose in the world, truly believing that it has to be contained at all costs. That being said, she takes no joy in her more extreme actions, and is willing to work with those she has disagreements with, as seen when she forms a truce with the Widow despite their shared animosity for one another.

He truly noble side can be seen when the threat of Pilgrim, a powerful Dark One with the power to control the Gift comes to the Badlands with the plan to conquer the world. The Master is willing to put aside her differences with the Widow and Bajie, enlisting their help in finding a solution for dealing with Pilgrim to prevent him from irreversibly damaging society. She is eventually stabbed by M.K., and found by the Widow while on the brink of death, where she finally expresses remorse for the more extreme side of her actions. She explains that the reason she always went so far in containing the Gift was because the first time her Gift emerged it caused her to accidentally kill her own brother, and she wanted to prevent something like that from ever happening again.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Master's Gift: The Master is the most trained person with the Gift seen in the series, being able to turn it on and off at will without any harmful effects, and is even able to use its effects passively without fully turning it on, such as being able to passively heal her injuries without her eyes turning black.
    • Chi Control: Due in large part to her Gift, the Master has near complete mastery over controlling the chi in others in order to disable their Gift.
    • Longevity: Bajie states that she is well over one-hundred years old, suggesting her Gift gives her a supernaturally long lifespan.
    • Seeing Beyond: The Master can use her Gift in order to search across the world in order to find another person, she demonstrates this by locating Ankara while she was on the run.
  • Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: The Master was an extremely powerful warrior, and although it is likely a result of the Gift amplifying her abilities, even without turning it on she demonstrated incredibly skill in combat to the point of being able to take down the Widow without any difficulty.
  • Leadership: Prior to its destruction from Pilgrim, the Master led the Abbot Monastery for over a century while keeping its existence a secret from the rest of the world.
