To help him out, you have to go back in the school and find all his notebooks for him.
~ "HOW TO PLAY" story screen

The Unnamed Student Protagonist is the unseen main protagonist of the Baldi's Basics franchise.

He is one of Baldi's students, who wants to retrieve his unnamed friend's seven lost notebooks while avoiding Baldi and other obstacles. However, after reaching the final exit and heading to Baldi's office in the original game, the Protagonist instead encounters a corrupted entity, Null, who tells him to destroy the game.

Personality[]

There is little information on the Protagonist but we can assume he is shown to be very altruistic and loyal as he's shown when he takes all his friend's notebooks and delivers them for nothing in return even though he has gone through serious danger and potentially death.

However, throughout the game he becomes quite unfriendly and starts treating his teammates badly (although in the player's defense, it is necessary for survival) like Playtime, who just wanted to play jumping rope and he occasionally cuts her rope (despite she was forcing him), which makes Playtime very upset, and even breaking the school rules (although some of them are just blatantly absurd), but even so, the Protagonist is shown to be someone that is well known because Baldi greets him with enough politeness when he arrives at his school, in addition to Playtime always wanting to play with him often.

The Protagonist also seems to be a very curious person, because he managed to discover all the secrets in Classic Remastered, despite Null's warnings not to continue playing. He also appears to be a prankster, because according to NINENINE secret, on April 17, 2019, he prank called a distant relative of a character named “Lord Bumbo.”

Appearance[]

The Protagonist is a human/humanoid, however, the game is played from a first-person perspective, so his external appearance is never shown. He see from slightly below Baldi's eye level, indicating that he is shorter than him by default as if he was young. The Principal of the Thing gives hints that he was a child, as when sending him to detention, he says that he should know better but still insists on telling his parents about what he did, even for a small infraction such as running in the halls.

When hacking by disabling first person view and forcing the mesh to be visible, the Protagonist's identity is a tall, whitish-grey cylindrical model. Mystman12 even refers to him as Capsule Collider, based on the model's name. The cylinder is actually a Unity-Mesh Type. However, this is clearly just a placeholder and not the actual appearance.

Biography[]

Classic[]

School is out, but the Protagonist's friend ends up unintentionally leaving his notebooks at school and he can't get them because he is busy for "eating pracitice", so the Protagonist needs to collect all 7 notebooks at Baldi's school while answering his math questions. When he arrives at school, he is greeted by Baldi and goes to take the first notebook, and answers the questions to get it back.

If the Protagonist answer all the questions right he gets a quarter that can help him by buying things in the vending machine or using the Noise Phone. But after getting an impossible third question in the second notebook wrong (this is inevitable), Baldi will start to run after him relentlessly without stopping for nothing, so the Protagonist must run away from Baldi to take the other notebooks. In the end when he has to escape from the school, he can either be caught by Baldi which will reset the game or run away from school and return these notebooks to him. However, after the Protagonist successfully reaches the exit, he hears a mysterious voice that will congratulate him but the mysterious voice tells the Protagonist to play worse because he needs something. The Protagonist listens to the mysterious voice and he will return to Baldi's school the next day.

After completing the game by answering all the math problems wrong, the Protagonist is transported to Baldi's office, instead of meeting Baldi, he meets an Entity, which is supposedly behind the mysterious voice, and in front of him is a distorted Baldi. The Entity congratulates the Protagonist for finding him in this office, but he will tell him not to tell anyone about this game, he asks him to close the game, destroy it, and never play it again. After the Entity finishes talking, the game closes and the Protagonist is transported back home.

Plus[]

1st Floor[]

After the events of the original game, when the Protagonist enters the school, he was greeted by Baldi standing in front of the elevator. The Protagonist has to find classrooms which contain a notebook each. When Baldi finishes his countdown, he will start chasing the Protagonist. After the Protagonist has succeeded to collect all the notebooks, all elevators are open. The Protagonist has to escape by going through all elevators depending on the floor he is on while trying to avoid Baldi in order to complete the game.

2nd Floor[]

3rd Floor[]

After the Protagonist makes it past the third floor, Baldi will dance and sing a song, congratulating him for completing the game. A few seconds after the song ends, the game will pseudo-crash, and the Protagonist will be taken, presumably, back to outside school. Also, during the Protagonist's journey, he meets Johnny, the Store Manager, where he can purchase items in his shop, with which he can help the Protagonist on his journey.

Demo Style[]

A few months after the events of Plus, the Protagonist wants to go back to school for the third time, because he wants to find out more about the story of the game. When the Protagonist returns to school, he is greeted by Baldi again who this time refers to the school as "demo". In the first class, he sees a Math Machine which he thinks is the same as the one in the Super Schoolhouse.

If the Protagonist enters the correct answer into the Math Machine, Baldi will call him and give him a quarter, like before, but when entering the next classroom, the Protagonist is shocked to see a question that is still unsolvable on the Math Machine and when he puts the question in Baldi will get angry and ready to chase him again.

Baldi's Basement[]

After the Protagonist is able to answer all the Math Machines correctly, and then answer 6 bonus questions correctly, he will be given a Portal Poster, where he will then need to use it in the classroom with the Safety Scissors poster in it. This will reveal a ladder leading to Baldi's Basement. When the Protagonist enters a room with a shrink machine in it, the guy's wearing a red shirt will appear behind him, asking him why he hasn't destroyed the game yet, before going on to explain that he knows that he want to figure out the game's lore, but the Entity tells him to stop doing that and that for once he should listen to him. Also, the Entity tell the Protagonist that he doesn't have a real name. So, the most logical thing to call him is "Null".

Finally, Null tells the Protagonist that he is fed up with everyone playing Baldi's Basics and that although he could get in trouble for it, Null decides to force the game to close.

Birthday Bash[]

One year later after the events of Demo Style, to celebrate the one year anniversary of the original game, the Protagonist is invited by Baldi to return to school. When he arrived at school once again, he was greeted by Baldi again who had come to the birthday party. When the Protagonist picks up the first notebook, he is called by Baldi and gives him a gift that when opened will appear randomly. However, when picks up the second notebook or answers the last question wrong, Baldi will chase him for the fourth time and the Protagonist must avoid some of his obstacles.

After the notebooks have been collected, when the Protagonist heads to the exit cafeteria he is "surprised" by Baldi and the residents of the Schoolhouse. Baldi tells him to step on a lift and blow out the candle on a large cake. Once the candle is blown out, the lights dim and everyone is lifted into the air, forcing the Protagonist to a hallway full of glitched rooms.

Normal Ending[]

In the glitched room, the Protagonist meets some of the corrupted files that resemble Baldis but they don't harm him. when he goes to a room full of lockers, he accidentally enters the puzzle room and as a puzzle the Protagonist has to count Baldis based on the color of the buttons in this room; after he gets it right, Baldi shouts "Wow!" before a room opens. Stepping into the room spawns several hostile colored versions of Baldi, forcing him to run. After enough time passes, a distorted "thank you" screen appears showing Baldi and the others.

Alternate/True Ending[]

An alternate ending can be found if the Protagonist was to use a "Dangerous Teleporter" to get back to the first floor. However, obtaining the teleporter is very hard, as this item has a very low spawn rate, and can only be obtained from the vending machines. Once inside the Principal's office, the Protagonist will find Null in the office. He will once again congratulate to him in finding him, but he is angry because he still hasn't destroyed the game. Null warns the Protagonist again that he must destroy the game before something bad happens. After Null finishes talking, the game closes.

NULL Style[]

After defeating any style with all Fun Settings enabled, the Protagonist will face Null in NULL Style who has made Null angry at him for not listening to what he says. The Protagonist must collect all seven notebooks and go to the four exits as usual (but the school will not turn red), while avoiding Null, who is very fast and can break through windows to catch him.

After the Protagonist collects all the notebooks and is about to escape from the school, Null closes the last exit, something that should not happen leaving the game broken. But the Protagonist does not give up, he grabs nearby objects and throws them at Null to try to defeat him once and for all. After the Protagonist throws 10 hits at Null, he is teleported to Mystman12's office.

Null Ending[]

In the office, the Protagonist reads a message from the game developer, which contains some information on where the Baldi's Basics story is going. After the book is closed, Null appears in the office. He then tells him that what is written in the message is a lie (and tries to glitch the game out to crash it) then Null tries to tell the Protagonist something else. But he intensely glitches out and then disappears while screaming in pain. Nothing happens after this, so the Protagonist will leave the office to return to his home.

New Secret Endings[]

After the NULL Style is defeated, when the Protagonist returns to Baldi's Schoolhouse, he can be accessed in 3 new secret endings after the Null is defeated and the Protagonist finally feels at peace:

  • In the Classic Style, Baldi gives the Protagonist some advice on subtraction, teaching him about negative numbers.
  • In the Party Style, Baldi lets the Protagonist listen to some music he made, as a surprise.
  • In the Demo Style, after entering Baldi's Basement, Baldi can be seen in the shrink machine and lets the Protagonist help him test it out. However, its fails, and Baldi says the machine still needs a few tweaks.
    • None of these encounters end the game, instead taking the Protagonist back to his home (or off-screen as he returns upstairs from Baldi's basement) as usual.
    • It should be noted during these three secret endings that Baldi will not make an attempt to try to harm him. In fact, he appears quite friendly.

Other Games[]

Field Trip Demo[]

At the start of the game, the Protagonist first appears in the hall of a small version of the Super Schoolhouse. When the Protagonist comes out of the exit, he meet Baldi behind his bus and invites him to go camping with him.

When the minigame starts, Baldi tells the Protagonist to guard the campfire and collect all the wood around the forest if the fire is almost extinguished. If the timer reaches 0 seconds, a screen will appear that says "Wow-time, you won! With that score you get these great items! Congrat!" along with the fire bonus and final score, as well as the items. However, if the fire goes out before time runs out, Baldi appears at the bonfire and immediately captures the Protagonist. Currently, the game is still in under-development.

Public Demo[]

In the Public Demo, it is not much different from before, but this time the Protagonist has to collect eight notebooks and has to avoid being chased by Baldi.

After collecting all 8 notebooks and entering the functional elevator, a look of Baldi's face up close will appear, and congratulate the Protagonist in a distorted voice. After Baldi's speech, Baldi's mouth remains open, and it, his nose, his eyes, and his eyebrows turn completely black. After 0.1-0.8 seconds, the game closes.

Kickstarter Exclusive Demo[]

The Protagonist will have to beat Baldi at Hide-and-Seek in 3 different floors in the Super Schoolhouse. After this is done, he will be taken to a black room, with Baldi standing before him. Turning around will reveal text saying:

"Some day, you will get the satisfying, canonical, and exciting ending that you deserve."

"Today is not that day."

When the Protagonist turns back around, Baldi will dab for a few seconds, before the game ends.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only character/protagonist not voiced by any actor, except for a few of his voices when drinking, eating, and blowing out the candles on the big cake in Birthday Bash and Plus; but it's still not certain who the voice is.
  • He's also the only playable character in the series.
  • From Null's dialogues "I know you're very... accustomed to there be (Glitching) figure out the story and the lore!", it can be inferred that the unnamed Protagonist is not only a character in the game, but a in-universe real-life gamer, probably used to playing games like Five Nights at Freddy's, where the lore has to be found.
