Theo is one of the main protagonists of the anime movie Doraemon: Nobita and the Legend of the Sun King. He is the hard-hearted prince of Mayana who looks identical to Nobita Nobi, so the two switch places so that Theo can learn "magic" in Nobita's world to defeat the evil sorceress Ledina.
He was voiced by Megumi Ogata.
Appearance[]
Theo is notable for looking identical to Nobita, except his big eyes are his actual eyes rather than glasses (which, interestingly, gives him a resemblance to Sewashi Nobi as well), he has ponytail and wears traditional Mayana clothes with a purple cape. At the end of the film, when he is crowned king, he wears the crown and replaces his cape with a red one.
Personality[]
Despite looking identical, Theo is the completely opposite of Nobita in terms of personality. He is harsh and somewhat selfish, easily punishing his subjects for the slightest provocation and willingly sacrificing people under the false belief that it will lift Ledina's curse. As he comes from an ancient kingdom, he interprets modern technology as magic and considers them Ledina's tricks, much to Doraemon's worry. He is also very blunt, as he doesn't hesitate to criticize Gian's singing voice. Perhaps the only person of the main cast that he truly respects at the start is Nobita himself, especially since the two have formed a bond. Still, he dearly loves his mother and part of the reason he seeks to lift the curse at all cost is to awaken her, as well as having a bond with Poporu. Secretly, he is also insecure as he thinks that he may be unfit to be king.
However, spending time with the main group has gradually opened his mind. He becomes more compassionate and sympathizing, forgiving his subjects if they didn't do anything to deserve punishment, and starting to understand his mother's words about understanding people. He also starts to care for Kuku more after continuously being oblivious to her feelings, and even goes alone to rescue her upon learning that Ledina has kidnapped her and wants him to rescue her alone. However, when Nobita says that he and his friends will aid Theo because that's what friends are, Theo finally learns the true meaning of friendship and truly becomes a nicer person, even allowing the group to address him by name instead of as "prince".
Eventually, Theo comes in time to rescue Nobita from being sacrificed by Ledina. He admits that the latter has taught him what true friends mean and that he won't deserve to be a prince anymore if he fails to rescue him. The two then team up to fight Ledina and win, and when the sorceress destroys the temple as one last revenge, Theo even tells Nobita to let him die so that Nobita can be safe. Afterwards, he also finally returns Kuku's feelings.
History[]
Theo is the prince of Mayana, and had been taught by his mother to understand people and the value of food. He had a pet named Poporu. When the sorceress Ledina, seeking revenge on Mayana for banishing her, placed a curse on the kingdom which caused disastrous natural phenomena and put the Queen to an endless sleep. Desperate, Theo tried to find a way to lift the curse at all cost, including sacrificing people to the cenote to no avail.
One day, Theo stumbles upon Nobita and Doraemon, who are chasing Poporu for taking Nobita's tests. Shocked by Nobita's identical look to him, Theo deduces that Nobita is a clone created by Ledina and attacks him. The two fall down to mud but are rescued by Doraemon. After seeing Poporu being unable to recognize Nobita at all, Theo finally believes Nobita as Poporu is able to recognize Ledina's copycats. Theo introduces himself to Nobita and Doraemon, and immediately goes into the hole that connects Mayana with Nobita's house, leading to Doraemon having to follow him. Meanwhile, Theo's soldiers mistake Nobita for the prince and carry him back to the castle, where he lives in luxury. While being in Nobita's world, due to his inability to understand the modern world, Theo causes a lot of trouble despite Doraemon trying to stop him, including hurting Shizuka's feelings. After returning to Mayana, Theo tells Nobita and Doraemon about Ledina and requests to switch with Nobita for a time to learn "magic" in Nobita's world in order to stop Ledina, and Nobita instantly agrees.
The next day, Theo and Doraemon are invited by Gian and Suneo to listen to Gian singing. When Theo bluntly criticizes Gian for his atrocious voice, Gian attacks him, only for Theo to fight him back efficiently due to having been trained in martial arts by Ishmal. Just then Shizuka arrives and says that she's disappointed in "Nobita", forcing Doraemon to explain everything just as Nobita is returning due to Ishmal's painful training. Theo then invites the main group to Mayana, but Nobita has to disguise as a girl so as not to be confused with the prince, much to the latter's dismay. While in Mayana, Theo has enough of Takao and Moka's criticisms of him behind his back and invites the two to play Sacadi (Mayana soccer game) to prove his true talent. However, Takao and Moka manage to score numerous times, and as Sacadi's rule is that the loser must do everything the winner asks, including dying, this put Theo in danger. Just then Nobita appears and volunteers to play with Theo, and the two eventually score. Theo lets Nobita decide Takao and Moka's fate, and Nobita decides to forgive them.
That night, while Theo is sitting on his window, Kuku shows him how much she learns to make string figures (as Nobita taught her, and she thought he was Theo). He angrily dismisses her, much to her sadness as she runs away. Being reminded of how Shizuka was disappointed in him when she thought he was Nobita, Theo follows Kuku so he can apologize, only to find out that she has been kidnapped by Ledina. The sorceress tells him to come and rescue her in the Temple of Darkness alone before the noon as it will be when Ledina sacrifices her, and he agrees. He then finds out that Takao and Moka had seen overheard everything and orders them to keep things secret, before running away to rescue Kuku.
In the skeleton forest, Theo is exhausted and about to be sunk into the quicksand, but the main group alongside Poporu and Ishmal arrive in time to rescue him. He tells them that he should do it alone, but Nobita says that they're his friends so they will help him. Finally learning the true meaning of friendship, Theo happily agrees. After travelling for a while, they are attacked by the snakes and Ishmal falls off the cliff, although Theo believes that he will survive. Yafoo then attacks them with his crocodile and vultures, and one carries Theo away. He hits it and makes it let him go, but falls, gets injured and faints as a result. Theo is found by Poporu and the two discover themselves near the Temple of Darkness. The two arrive in time just when Ledina is about to sacrificing Nobita (believing that he is Theo). Theo and Nobita team up to fight against Ledina and manage to defeat her, but she destroys the temple to spite them one last time. Nobita tries to rescue Theo despite the latter's protest, and the two falls with the temple only to be thankfully saved by Ledina's vulture, which Doraemon has fed his dango to.
Theo then wakes up Kuku by a kiss (mimicking how the Prince woke Snow White up in the fairy tale). He is later crowned the new Sun King, and finds out from Poporu that the main group have to return home since the portal that connects the two worlds is broken. Seeing all photos of the adventures they had together, Theo and Kuku tearfully say that the main group will always be welcomed in Mayana.
