Theresia van Astrea (born Theresia Astrea), famously honored as the Master Swordsman, is a major posthumous character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, as well as its anime television series & manga adaptations of the same name. Although she perished years before the events of the story, Theresia appeared in flashbacks and was mentioned fairly frequently. Outside of the main series, Theresia was featured as the deuteragonist of The Love Song of the Sword Devil and The Love Ballard of the Sword Devil, the second and third volumes of the spin-off light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Ex respectively.
As a young girl Theresia was chosen by the Sword God as the Master Swordsman of her era, and was truly unmatched in combat. Although she disliked fighting and killing, she fought for her nation during the Demi-Human War. She slaughtered thousands upon thousands of demi-human and ended the decade-long civil war after just two years of fighting. During those dark years she met and fell in love with Wilhelm Trias, a gruff swordsman who was perhaps the only man in the Kingdom to come close to matching her swordsmanship.
After the war, Astrea resolved to hang up her sword and allow her new husband Wilhelm to take up the mantle of the Kingdom of Lugunica's greatest defender. The couple spent many happy decades with one another, and even had a son they named Heinkel Astrea. When Heinkel reached adulthood, he had a son of his own named Reinhard Astrea. Reinhard was a truly blessed child, and was without a doubt the most powerful individual on the planet. Theresia was particularly close with her grandson.
However, the responsibilities of the Master Swordsman eventually called upon her services once again. Theresia, in the place of her son Heinkel, was sent on an expedition to exterminate the fearsome White Whale. During the hunt, the Sword God stripped Theresia of her blessing and bequeathed the powers of the Master Swordsman on the young Reinhard. The loss of her blessing caused Theresia to tragically fall in battle against the monster.
The death of Theresia tore the Astrea family apart. In his grief, Wilhelm blamed his son and young grandson for his wife's death, as both of them had inadvertently contributed to her demise. Heinkel, whose wife had fallen into a coma three years prior, turned to alcoholism and spurned contact with the House of Astrea. The young Reinhard was deeply affected by these events, as he had essentially lost his family at such a young age and was led to believe he was responsible.
Theresia was voiced by Minami Takahashi in the Japanese version of the anime adaptation and by Xanthe Huynh in the English version. Takahashi has also voiced Megumi Tadokoro in Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma. Huynh's other heroic roles include Haru Okumura in Persona 5, Hanayo Koizumi in Love Live!, and Yuki Nonaka in The Testament of Sister New Devil.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Regeneration Negation: In addition to the blessing of the Master Swordsman, Theresia had a second divine blessing that she was born with. The blessing of the reaper made it so that any wound inflicted on someone by Theresia would never naturally close, regardless of the passage of time. Any form of healing magic would also fail to heal a wound inflicted by Theresia, although its has been stated that the Authority of Wrath demonstrated by the Witch of Wrath Minerva could heal one of the Master Swordsman's inflicted wounds. Upon Theresia's death, a person's wound would finally close, although it would reopen in the event that she was somehow reanimated.
Equipment[]
- Dragon Sword Reid: The Dragon Sword Reid was created eons ago by an anonymous blacksmith who used the finest steel and the finest techniques to forge the blade. Upon its creation, the Sword was blessed by the Sword God himself, meaning it could only be wielded by those fine warriors the deity deemed worthy. Of all the renowned, blessed, and enchanted blades that exited in the world, the Dragon Sword Reid was considered the greatest. The Dragon Sword receive its name from its first known wielder—the first Master Swordsman Reid Astrea, who, during his life, used the enchanted blade to butcher thousands of dragons. After Reid's passing, the blade was inherited by each generation's Master Swordsman, until it came into Theresia's possession. Due to the Sword God's blessing, Theresia could only draw it against a truly worthy opponent. In the rare event that it was drawn, the legendary blade was widely-acclaimed for its deadly sharpness and its absolute indestructability. Additionally, the Dragon Sword was a piece included in the Ten Swords of Power, a set of ten incredibly powerful blades considered to be the finest in existence. The twin swords Murasame and Masayume wielded by Cecils Segmund and the Bright Sword Volakia wielded by Stride Volakia were also counted among the Swords of Power.
