We are Toa! We are the elements!
~ Gali to Makuta the Mask Hoarder.

The Toa Mata, later known as the Toa Nuva, are the overall main protagonistic faction in the entire BIONICLE franchise. They are the group of Toa, who were destined to reawaken the Great Spirit Mata Nui as well as protect the universe from Makuta Teridax and other enemies. They were also led by Tahu, the Toa of Fire.

History[]

The Toa Mata were once created by the being Artakha on the island with the same name. After recieving combat training from the Order of Mata Nui, they were then kept in the Toa Canisters and hibernated in stasis.

The Toa Canisters were supposed to be launched into Mata Nui/Metru Nui following the events of the Great Cataclysm and land on the island of Mata Nui. The Toa's original mission and purpose of their creation was to proceed through Kini-Nui, travel towards Metru Nui, and continue on to reawaken Mata Nui. However, the Canisters malfunctions and wiped the memories of the Toa Mata so they forgot everything about their identites and purpose. For a thousand years, the canisters floated in the oceans of the Matoran Universe until Takua collected the Toa Stones from Kini-Nui, which unwittingly activated a signal that summoned the canisters to the island of Mata Nui.

The Island of Mata Nui[]

The Toa Canisters later washed ashore on the beach in the island of Mata Nui. Due to the toll, the Toa Mata's organic tissues had decayed over the years and they have to rebuild themselves following their arrival.

Soon after they rebuilt their bodies, the Toa Mata then head towards the respective Koro where they met the Matoran and the Turaga, who told them about the threat of Makuta Teridax and their mission. Soon after, the Toa Mata met each other for the first time as Tahu emerged as their leader.

Armed with their Kanohi masks and weapons, the Toa Mata proceeded to face Teridax for the first time. They were unsuccessful in defeating the enemy, only continued to protect the island as Teridax awakened the Bohrok swarms. After defeating the hive-queens of the Bohrok, the Toa Mata were exposed to a substance called liquid protodermis underneath the island, which mutated and enhanced their bodies along with gaining them new armor and weaponry. The Toa Mata began calling themselves the "Toa Nuva" after this.

The first major threat the Toa Nuva faced afterwards was the Bohrok-Kal, who had stolen their Toa symbols and ability to control the elements. Once the Toa defeated these enemies, the Mask of Light was then discovered. The Toa assisted Jaller and Takua in their quest to fulfill the prophecy of the seventh Toa while clashing with Makuta's Rahkshi. When Takanuva, the Toa of Light, was born, the Toa along with the Matoran witnessed him seemingly defeat Teridax and discover the lost island of Metru Nui.

Trivia[]

  • The term "Toa Mata" was officially coined after the 2001-2002 story arc took place to prevent confusion. During this time, they were simply known as the "Toa" because they were the only Toa ever seen in the story at the time. Prior to the name becoming canonized, Toa Olda was another popular fan name, contrasting to the name Toa Nuva.
  • The Toa Mata make a cameo appearance in The LEGO Movie; they are seen when Wyldstyle tells Emmet about the many realms that exist in the LEGO Universe.
  • The Toa Mata were the first Toa team, but the Matoran honor the Toa Cordak as the first Toa team, because only the Order of Mata Nui, the Av-Matoran[BL10], and Artakha were aware of the Toa Mata's existence.
  • The Toa Mata also return in the second generation of Bionicle and are the only and rare team of Toa who have already appeared in the original generation of the franchise to make an appearance in the second generation.
