Toad is a major character in Nintendo's Super Mario franchise.
He is a humanoid character with a mushroom-shaped head and a long-time friend and retainer of Princess Peach from the Super Mario games. Throughout the series, many Toads have been shown since they're an entire race/species of citizens that assist Princess Peach at her castle and reside in the Mushroom Kingdom. While they have usually played a less active role and supplied Mario with information, some of them, like an individual named Toad, have taken a more active role and been playable alongside the other main characters in certain games.
He is voiced by Samantha Kelly, who also portrays Princess Peach in the same series.
Appearance[]
Toad is a humanoid character who is most often seen with a white mushroom with red spots on his head, wears a blue vest, diaper-like pants and large brown shoes. However, there have also been some Toads seen that have different-colored spots like blue, green, yellow and purple, and that have a vest with the matching color. This is seen both with the Toads who accompany Mario, Princess Peach and Toadsworth on their vacation in Super Mario Sunshine, as well as the Toad Brigade in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Mario Bros. 2[]
Toad is one of the playable characters in Super Mario Bros. 2 who ventures out to save Subcon from Wart and the 8-bit Club. He is the fastest and strongest character, but cannot jump very high.
Wario Woods[]
Toad is the main protagonist of Wario Woods who takes it upon himself to save Peaceful Woods from Wario and his monsters.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]
Toad has a supporting role in the game. Toad first appears at Mario's Pad where he teaches Mario about saving the game and battling opponents. He will also reward Mario if he helps him through Mushroom Way, and serves as a tutorial in a few mini-games. Toad also meets with Mario and company at Smithy's Factory where he will buy and sell items. In the Nintendo Switch remake, Toad appears during the Gauge Move Toad Assist and post-game to give Mario a voucher to sleep for free at Marrymore Inn's Suite.
Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]
Toad appears in Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, as one of the playable characters. In this game, Toad is depicted with blue spots, which is reminiscent of his in-game appearance in the NES version of Super Mario Bros. 2, as well as the look of Blue Toad from the New Super Mario Bros. series.
Mario vs Donkey Kong[]
In the Nintendo Switch remake of the game, Toad is the second player's character in Co-Op mode.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Superhuman Strength: Toad is able to lift heavy objects with ease, as shown in Super Mario Bros. 2 where he can quickly lift a turnip from the ground.
- Superhuman Speed: As shown in Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario 3D World, Toad can run very fast, faster than any of the other playable characters. He is likely one of the faster characters in the Mushroom Kingdom
- Vehicular Driver: In the Mario Kart spinoff series, Toad is skilled at driving karts and bikes.
- Plant Manipulation: As shown in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Sports Mix, Toad is able to release spores from his mushroom cap as both a counterattack and shield. He is also able to use his spores to release huge mushrooms from the ground as shown in Mario Sports Mix.
- Pyrokinesis: In Super Mario Strikers Charged, Toad is able to perform a kick shot that ignites the ball. Toad is also able to shoot fireballs when he obtains a Fire Flower in the animated TV show.
