“ | It's a Flying Saucer?! | „ |
~ Tom Campbell, upon witnessing a Dalek Flying Saucer flying overhead. Also his most famous quote. |
Tom Campbell is a Special Police constable who is one of the main protagonists in the 1966 film Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. He is portrayed by legendary and late actor Bernard Cribbins who would later go on to portray Wilfred Mott in the modern Doctor Who TV series.
Personality[]
Tom Campbell is best describe as a no nonsense strictly by the book police officer when first introduced. He at first remains skeptical and at first did not believe in time travel that is until he Dr. Who, his niece Louise, and his granddaughter Susan all arrived in the year 2150 A.D. He even showed both shock and surprise upon witnessing a Dalek Saucer overhead and upon first meeting the Daleks.
However he is deep down a kindhearted, smart, cunning, brave, honorable, noble, and reasonable authority figure. He even risked himself to save Susan from falling debris, disguising and passing himself as a Roboman aboard the Dalek Saucer, and even risked climbing up and out of the Dalek mine-shaft (while avoid being seen by the Daleks) as well.
When he and Dr. Who were captured by the Daleks, he showed horror and disgust upon seeing a Red Saucer Commander Dalek and two Silver Dalek subordinates ruthlessly and mercilessly executing an innocent human prisoner names Thompson who tried to escape and Tom himself was held back by Dr. Who himself in order to avoid sharing the same fate.

Trivia[]
- Bernard Cribbins himself would later appear on the modern Doctor Who television series as the recurring character Wilfred Mott, the maternal grandfather of the Tenth Doctor and Fourteenth Doctor's companion Donna Noble, and who briefly became a companion in his own right. He is the only actor to have portrayed companions in both the movies and the television series. While filming The End of Time, he remarked to outgoing series star David Tennant, "The last time I was in the TARDIS was in 1966." After a slight pause, Tennant noted that he had not even been born yet, causing Cribbins to feel "very, very old".
- Tom Campbell's foiling of the "smash and grab" marks a peculiar instance of time travel in Doctor Who which is at odds with most accounts in the mainstream continuity which establish that generally a time traveller cannot go back and simply change their own personal history. It is of note that the earlier version of Tom who would have entered TARDIS is completely absent from this new version of the event, his place being taken by the present Tom.
