Biography[]
Early Life[]
Tommy was born during the 1980s in Texas to unnamed parents, and had an older brother, who raised him. Not much is known about Tommy's early life, the brothers were close and had an interest in college football. In addition, Tommy and Joel rented motorcycles and went on a cross-country ride for Tommy's birthday.
After Joel had a daughter named Sarah, Tommy went with his brother and his niece to several events and carnivals, as shown in photos in her room. It's assumed that Tommy and Joel both worked together in Austin, as some dialogue suggests that the two do.
Outbreak[]
Tommy attempts to call Joel after the outbreak starts, having called him eight times as Sarah later notices. He appears when picking Joel and Sarah from their home, who had to kill an infected Cooper. Tommy drove them into town until and reached to Highway 71 on Texas State, but encounter a traffic jam.
Chaos erupts when the infection begin to attack, and a vehicle crashes into the side of car, causing the three to have to run on foot. With Sarah's leg broken, Joel carries her as Tommy guides them to safety, and they managed to escape from the chaos.
Tommy holds the infected back, telling Joel to take Sarah to safety, and presumably killed them. Tommy returned to his brother, killing a soldier that was holding him at gunpoint. The soldier, however, had shot Sarah, causing her to die in Joel's arms.
Surviving[]
Years following the outbreak, Tommy and Joel committed numerous acts of violence to survive, with Tommy later commenting that he suffered from nightmares from what they did. The two made it to a Boston Quarantine Zone, but Tommy was sickened by his brother, and decided to join the Fireflies after being convinced by Marlene. Filled with hope that they could make the world better, Tommy got into an argument with Joel, and they both parted ways.
Tommy spent a long time with the Fireflies, and even visited the group's main research lab in the University of Eastern Colorado. Tommy became disillusioned with the cause, and left the Fireflies and told Marlene that if she needed any assistance, to go to his brother. Tommy reached to Jackson Country, where he help make a safe haven for people and families, and married a woman named Maria.
The two became leaders of the settlement, and worked at the hydroelectric plant to fix on generators, but were occasionally attacked by bandits. Despite losing most of his belongings due to the outbreak, Tommy had a photo of Joel and Sarah at a soccer match, but it was slightly faded.
The Last of Us[]
In the fall of 2033, Tommy reunited with his brother, and met his companion, Ellie and were brought into the settlement after introducing Maria to Joel. Tommy and Joel had a conversation alone where Joel told Tommy that Ellie was immune to the Cordyceps Brain Infection. He also wanted Tommy to finish the journey, and wanted to collect himself some gear to be on his way. Tommy refused, stating that his purpose in life was his family, causing an argument to ensue.
The argument was broken when a group of bandits attacked the settlement, and the brothers managed to fend off the attackers. Tommy reconsiders his decision after seeing Ellie interact with Joel, but Maria is upset when he tells her he's going. Ellie steals a horse and runs away, causing Tommy and Joel to give chase, and tracker her down before she gets killed. The brothers are ambushed by another group of bandits, and managed to kill them, and later found Ellie at an abandoned ranch.
Tommy decided to stay down stairs and keep on look out, as he knew Joel and Ellie needed to talk on her running away. He notices more bandits are coming, and tells the two to prepare for another fight, and the group managed to kill their attackers. Afterward, Tommy takes the two to the dam, where he shows them how he turned Jackson County into a fortified town, and Joel decides to take Ellie to the Fireflies. Tommy tells them that the Fireflies have a lab in the University of Eastern Colorado, and tells Joel and Ellie that they are always welcomed back to the settlement.
Months later, Joel and Ellie return to the settlement after the former stole Ellie from the Fireflies. Tommy accepts them as he promised, giving them room, and intends on getting his brother hitched with a woman named Esther.
The Last of Us Part II[]
A few weeks after Joel and Ellie came back to Jackson, Joel confesses his actions of killing the Fireflies and stopping them from killing Ellie to create a vaccine. Tommy is taken aback by Joel's confession, but admits that he would not have done any different. The two brothers then ride back to Jackson.
Two years later, Tommy trains Ellie in using a sniper rifle to shoot down Infected around the Ski Lodge, he questions about her uneasiness about Joel although Ellie dodges the question. The two then regroup with Joel at the lodge who states that Ellie's guitar strings need changing. Tommy inquires that Joel and Ellie go searching for new strings in an abandoned music store nearby, despite Ellie's reluctance, Tommy encourages her to go with him.
By 2038, Tommy is still present in Jackson and attends Seth's family party. When Seth makes a homophobic remark against Ellie and Dina, causing Joel to get physical with him, Tommy and Maria step in to calm things down and the two take Seth out to get some fresh air.
The next morning, Tommy and Joel go on patrol and eventually come across a huge horde of Infected. The two save Abby Anderson who is pinned and nearly killed by them. Tommy, Joel and Abby then flee to the Baldwin Hunting Lodge where Abby's group of fellow Washington Liberation Front soldiers are staying. Once inside, Tommy greets the group and offers to take them back to Jackson to restock on supplies before they move on.
Tommy soon introduces him and Joel, although the group soon glare at Joel who remarks that they've heard of them. Abby then proceeds to take a shotgun and shoot Joel in his right leg. Tommy cries out at this and attempts to attack Abby, but is restrained and knocked out. Tommy remains unconscious while Abby beats Joel with a golf club, Ellie attempts but fails to save Joel and is pinned down by the group while Abby kills Joel by bashing his skull in.
Tommy and Ellie are left alive, as Dina and Jesse bring them both back to Jackson where Joel is put to rest. Tommy later arrives at Ellie's house with a box of food, saying that Maria wants to make sure she's eating. Tommy goes on to state that they would be leaving Jackson vulnerable should they spare the arms to pursue Abby's group, despite being confident that they're from Seattle. Ellie angrily claims that if either of them were killed, Joel would already be half way there. Tommy relents, but Ellie states that she will leave to avenge Joel, alone if she has to. Tommy says that he'll have another talk with Maria and leaves Ellie to get some sleep.
Tommy is unsuccessful in convincing Maria to spare the manpower and is eventually driven to leave himself to avenge his brother, leaving a note telling Maria that he must "put them to justice for what they have done" as well as telling her not to let Ellie go after him, going as far as to say take her weapons, lock up the horses and even lock Ellie up herself. Against his wishes, Maria gives Ellie and Dina her horse to pursue Tommy and aid him in his quest for revenge, Jesse soon follows to assist them as well.
Tommy eventually finds one of Abby's friends, Nick, and tortures him and another WLF solider to extract information from them in a manner similar to Joel's.
Tommy soon gains a sniper vantage point and begins firing upon Manny and Abby. While the two proceed to try and hunt him down, Tommy shoots to attract the Infected towards their location. Although the two WLF soldiers seem to have him cornered, Tommy kills Manny by shooting him in the back of the head and proceeds to fire at Abby who just manages to escape. At the pier, Tommy gets the drop on Abby and attacks her. Yara however, stabs Tommy in the back and Abby pushes Tommy into the ocean.
Tommy survives this however and finds Jesse, with them both hearing about Ellie's attack on the aquarium, which was supposedly Abby's location. Tommy and Jesse both arrive however, to find a horrified and distraught Ellie who had killed Owen and Mel, not knowing the latter was far along with a baby. Tommy comforts her at this and the group proceed to leave, accidentally leaving Ellie's map behind.
They then regroup at the theatre. Despite Ellie's desire to still get her revenge on Abby, they are all forced to switch their focus on getting a pregnant Dina back to Jackson. Tommy reveals that he found a gold necklace which he plans to give to Maria as an apology gift, although Jesse doubts that its real gold, Tommy then goes to collect it from the back.
However, Abby and Lev sneak up behind Tommy and train their weapons on him. A vengeful Abby orders him to get on his knees, but eventually ends up knocking him down after Tommy asks if she's going to kill him like a coward. Ellie and Jesse run into the room to assist Tommy, but Abby manages to shoot down Jesse and kill him with a shot to the face. Abby demands that Ellie reveal herself or that she would kill Tommy as well, Ellie is forced to comply and toss her weapon despite Tommy telling her to run away.
Ellie states that she knows why Abby killed Joel and that she's the one she wants. Abby says that they let them live and she wasted it before pointing her gun at Ellie. Tommy however, grabs Abby and saves Ellie from being shot, although Lev shoots him in the leg with an arrow. Tommy falls down before Abby shoots him in the face, and the woman proceeds to pursue after Ellie.
It is later revealed that Tommy survived being shot, although the bullet grazed his orbital and costed him half his eyesight. Ellie manages to get Dina and Tommy back to Jackson, with Ellie promising Tommy that she'd find Abby and make her pay.
Months later, Tommy is still alive, but is left blind in one eye and struggling to walk. He pays Ellie and Dina a visit at their ranch and reveals that him and Maria had chose to spend some time apart. He then reveals that he had scouts out around Jackson's perimeter, and that one came across a woman built like an ox and a boy with cuts around his mouth. Despite Tommy wanting Ellie to go after Abby and Lev to avenge Joel, Ellie reluctantly declines, leaving Tommy angered while reminding her of the promise she made and calling her a joke. Upon leaving, Dina demands that he never bring up Abby again before Tommy leaves on horseback, disappointed and bitter.
Tommy's visit had eventually resulted in being successful, as Ellie would gain post-traumatic stress disorder and would suffer from painful flashbacks of Joel's death. Unable to sleep or eat, Ellie leaves to find Abby at Santa Barbara, hoping that getting revenge would bring her closure. Despite traveling there to get revenge, she would abandon her vengeance when recalling a memory with Joel, allowing Abby and Lev to leave.
