Hero Overview

Huh, Toothless, could've sworn you had... {Toothless shows his teeth and eats the fish}... Teeth.
~ Hiccup when he started making a friendship with Toothless.

Toothless is the deuteragonist of DreamWorks Animation‘s How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

He was the last Night Fury, the rarest and most intelligent species of dragon that lived peacefully until they were hunted to near-extinction by Grimmel the Grisly, leaving Toothless the last one of his kind. He is Hiccup's best friend, the mate of the Light Fury and the ancestor of Thunder.

His vocal effects are provided by Randy Thom.

Appearance[]

Toothless is much larger than his book counterpart, being much bigger in size than Hiccup. He has jet black scales covering his whole body, his sides having small light patches in a pattern similar to that of a manta ray. Toothless possesses at least two sets of wings (one main pair and two smaller ones near the base of his tail). He is missing his left tail fin, when Hiccup shot Toothless down with his Bolas-Shooting Ballista, crashing into a tree where his left tailfin was damaged, missing, or cut/sliced off. This is later replaced by various artificial prosthetic tail fins that Hiccup constructs himself until Hiccup made a automatic black one that resembles his real tail fin and Hiccup adds Toothless' scales to make it fireproof which Toothless accepts the new tail permanently.

Toothless' eyes are a greenish-yellow. He can narrow his pupils to slits when threatened or angry, similar to that of a cat. But when he is docile or happy, his pupils become larger and more dog-like. Toothless gets his name from his sets of retractable teeth. He proves himself to be a very able fighter, such as when he rushes to Hiccup's aid in his battle with the Monstrous Nightmare, Toothless quickly causes the larger dragon to back down. Toothless also shows himself superior to most Vikings, as proven against Stoick in a quick skirmish.

In the first seasons of Race to the Edge, Toothless wore battle armor in order to avoid the Dragon Root lanced arrows. His first set of armor was made of Screaming Death scales that Hiccup and Snoutlout got when they traveled to Screaming Death Island to get the dragon’s scales because the Screaming Death has the strongest scales of any dragon. The only down-side of the original dragon armor was that it was heavy, but Toothless was still pretty fast while wearing it. They later switch to a set made of Gronckle Iron because it was also lighter in addition to being very durable. Despite that setback, Hiccup and Fishlegs were able to perfect armor. However, only Toothless and Hookfang had this armor made for them thus far and they haven't worn it again due to finding it uncomfortable.

Personality[]

Toothless is very intelligent and seems to have a dry sense of humor, similar to Hiccup. He does not take kindly to being offended or anyone offending or endangering his human friend, but is usually playful, docile, maybe even a little teasing when not threatened. He also shows a great curiosity, imitating Hiccup's actions and mannerisms when they initially encounter one another. Toothless' intelligence shows many times throughout the film, being able to understand Hiccup's words and commands as well as agree with some of what he says. It is shown that he has become aware of Hiccup's crush on Astrid, even seeming to briefly tease him about it.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Night Fury Physiology: According to the Dragon Manual, Night Furies are considered to be so mysterious and the most feared dragons, that it was often called the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." Throughout the franchise, Toothless is shown to have several physical attributes that surpasses that of most other Night Furies. This also makes Toothless to have some resilience/endurance and stamina to surpass standard dragon's weakness including Night Fury's weakness. Despite hunting Night Furies to a near extinction, Grimmel underestimated how powerful Toothless would become, as he didn't know Night Furies can turn invisible by summon lightning from an electric storm.
    • Intelligence and Communication Skills: As a Night Fury, Toothless' intelligence is unrivaled amongst the other dragons and often displays the attributes of an incredibly strategic thinker. Therefore, Toothless' intelligence is abnormally high and is much smarter than most other dragons. Toothless seems to be one of the few dragons who attempts to show creativity, as shown by his repeated attempts at drawing. He can comprehend silent commands via hand signals and motions and has also been taught by Hiccup to recognize his rider's Dragon Call as a summon. In "Stryke Out", he was able to trick a Razorwhip in the fights and understand how helpless the Triple Stryke was and decides to spare the dragon.
      • Synchronization: Thanks to the time they used the prosthetic tail fin, Toothless and Hiccup are able to fly together in perfect sync. Not only that, but they also understand each other the best out of all dragons and Riders, which was demonstrated several times.
    • Enhanced Speed and Agility: Toothless can fly over one hundred miles per hour and his aerial acrobatics, though requiring Hiccup's help to pull off, allow him to escape rather brutal confrontations with little difficulty. Even when not flying, Toothless can tear along the ground at terrific speeds and is one of the most agile dragons on land, shown being able to leap from trees, boulders, walls, etc. In the Book of Dragons by Maggie Testa, it is stated that Night Furies can fly faster than 750 miles per hour (1207 kilometers per hour). Being a Night Fury, Toothless is stated to be the fastest dragon in the world with only several dragons can catch up to it's speed. However it likely Night Furies don't use their full speed (and it is shown several times that these dragons take shortcuts to catch up to Toothless like what Grimmel's Deathgrippers did) so it likely that most of these dragons cannot completely rival the full speed of a Night Fury and the only dragon species that can rival a Night Fury in terms of full speed is the Skrill (who is in same dragon class as Toothless; Strike and rivals him ins speed, firepower, and intelligence; but is slight slower in flight) or perhaps the Light Fury. Night Furies' tails are also one of the main sources of their flying ability, and altering the tail can change its abilities. Despite being the fastest dragon in the world, Toothless is shown to be extremely fast even in average flight. He can keep up with a Speed Stinger and even the Lead Speed Stinger on ground battle. His wings and tail are also very flexible to fold their huge and powerful wings together or preform moves like a tail whip or a wing shield to use in combat.
    • Enhanced Strength and Combat: Toothless has shown to be tremendously strong for a dragon of his size, able to hold his own against other larger dragon species such as the Monstrous Nightmare, Whispering Death and Razorwhip. He can carry heavy objects, such as boulders and branches with his front legs alone, as well as adult humans such as Stoick, Gobber, Alvin, and Drago Bludvist. While carrying Hiccup on his back, he was also able to carry Hookfang with the extra weight of Snotlout with little struggle, as well as catch Barf and Belch when they fell off a cliff. When flying at full speed, he can knock down a dragon-proof ballista straight into the sea. As a Strike Class dragon, Toothless has a vice-like jaw that can exert great force. Toothless has showed signs of getting stronger as while he once struggled to pull Barf and Belch (A Hideous Zippleback that is implied to be physically stronger than a Night Fury) off a roof in "Twinsanity" he was able to retrain them with not signs of struggle in "A Tale of Two Dragons" and lift them with no struggle when the fell off the cliff in "The Zippleback Experience". While he was once exhausted from lifting Stoick and Hiccup, mostly Stoick alone in "How To Pick Your Dragon" he was able to lift both of them by the time of both "Crushing It" and "Midnight Scrum" without any struggle. Toothless is also strong in combat, being able to fend off Vikings like Stoick and several others at once, as seen in the first film. Toothless is also a very capable and persistent fighter on the ground. He has easily taken out a Gronckle in a short amount of time, as well as holding his own with Monstrous Nightmares and Whispering Deaths. Even with the inability to fly, he is a capable fighter as shown in "What Flies Beneath". He has proven against a Triple Stryke, a dragon of a similar power level. However it is shown on multiple occasions that Toothless flight ability was hindered so it slightly weakened his combat skills as many dragons he fought had a flight advantage. He can use his long wings to both cause huge gusts of wind and forming shields to protect them from most attacks.
    • Wind Gust: Similar to most dragons, Toothless’ large wings allow him to create a small gust of wind that is very strong. He first used this, with the other dragons, to blow the Smothering Smokebreath veil of smoke away ("Breakneck Bog"). He also used this same technique by himself to blow the fog away and reveals that the metal thief is actually Smothering Smokebreaths ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"). He later used it again to help put out a forest fire with the help of Torch and Barf and Belch.
    • Wing Shield: Toothless is able to use his enormous wings to shield Hiccup from being burned alive or even killed. A notable example of this was in "Animal House", where Toothless and Stormfly used it to protect Astrid and Hiccup from being buried in an avalanche. Another example was in "Zippleback Down", where Toothless used his wings to shield Hiccup from Torch. Also in "Dragon Eye of the Beholder, Part 1", where a bunch of arrows bounced off Toothless' wing when he shielded Hiccup from them. This also happen in “A Time to Skrill”, where a dragon root arrow bounce off of Toothless. Toothless also used this in "Crash Course" to protect Hiccup from the Cavern Crasher's fire and in "Quake, Rattle and Roll" where he shielded both Fishlegs and Hiccup with both of his wings. Toothless' wings are also able to withstand a Small Shadow Wing lava blast as shown in "The Longest Day".
    • Enhanced Stamina and Endurance: Toothless can fly longer than any other dragon. But he was shown to be exhausted during the first search for the Skrill and carrying heavy objects or someone heavy like Stoick for a whole day (he overcame this later on). He has shown to be able to run long distance with no sign of being exhausted from the Cove to the Kill Ring. Toothless' bodily tissue is substantially harder than regular dragons, and he is also able to take a lot of damage in battle from Hookfang, fighting off the Berk warriors, and Stoick the Vast. He can take attacks from his rival, and still look untouched. After he was poisoned by the Triple Stryke he was still able to fight and defeat him. He was also able to fly for a short time, despite being shot by a dragon root arrow. Although for some reason Night Furies cannot recover fast like other dragons after they are hit with dragon root arrows. Despite using all his energy to cloak in the third movie, Toothless managed to keep flying like it did nothing to him. However, he did fainted to the Deathgripper venom arrow after he de-cloaked.
      • Cold Resistance: In several episodes like "Animal House", "A Time to Skrill", “Triple Cross”, and many other episodes, even in short movies and the second movie that Toothless has been ( and survive, if sometimes playing in the snow) in a cold environment, like a snowstorm, the tundra, snowy mountains, arctic islands, and even freezing water without any discomfort. However, Grimmel the Grisly states that Night Furies cannot survive in consistently cold environments. This implies possibly that Nighty Furies cannot inhabit a cold place for an long time, or this weakness doesn't apply to Toothless because during his time with Hiccup he developed a tolerance to freezing cold temperatures.
    • Retractable Teeth: As a Night Fury, Toothless has the ability to retract his teeth when not using them. This unique trait can make him appear to be toothless, hence his name.
    • Enhanced Senses: Toothless appears to have an uncannily great sense of hearing, able to hear Hiccup's cries for help from the Cove even when Hiccup is in the arena as even possible can hear a small bug like a fly buzzing far in the distance. This good sense of hearing plays into his ability to use sonar, and he is seen using it in order to locate Dragon Island. He tracks Hiccup by his sense of smell but loses him when Hiccup takes to the air on the back of a Deadly Nadder. He also seems to have the ability of night vision though Hiccup did question when flying into the dark cave so possibly his night vision isn't that strong in the dark (However this may be due to the fact that while Night Furies are nocturnal to hunting and flying in the night, Toothless is mostly active during the day so that he can match his activities to the Vikings' and spend more time with Hiccup and his friends). He is, however, able to echolocate like a bat; sending sounds off and listening for them to bounce off objects around him, giving him the ability to find his way around in the dark. However, the good sense of hearing can often be used against him though, making him relatively easy to control and influence from the call of an Alpha Dragon.
      • Echolocation: In "We Are Family, Part 1", it is revealed that Toothless has a hidden ability that Hiccup never known about it, being so long with Toothless he finds a strange ability that Toothless can use echolocation to guide himself and Hiccup out of the cave they were trapped in. Hiccup recalls later that "Toothless let out a weird sound that bounced back toward them, and was able to use that to get out". He also used this ability in "Frozen" when they are flying over the frozen sea looking for Johann's ship. He can then use it to see in clouds, which he fits when looking for the Skrill.
    • Stealth and Camouflage: Toothless' black scales and extreme speed make him hard to notice, especially at night or in dark places. Toothless has the ability to move with silence even in pitch black conditions, and be one with darkness. This was demonstrated when confronting the Flightmare or when battling the Red Death in How to Train Your Dragon.
    • Cloaking/Lightning Invisibility: Toothless has the ability to channel lightning which enables him to seemingly disappear for a short period of time, similar to that of a Light Fury. Toothless can do this by summoning lightning from the sky to turn his scales reflective, causing an electric aura to surround him and become temporarily invisible, although it has been shown to use up a lot of their energy. The lightning that Toothless channel around his body will also electrocute anything in his vicinity. It is shown that anything made from Nighty Fury material can avoid being electrocuted to death so it implies that only Nighty Furies can resist their electric aura. This ability also surprised Grimmel himself as he didn't know Night Furies can do this, despite successfully hunting them down for years.
    • Firepower/Plasma Blasts: Like all dragons, Toothless is also able to shoot several forms of fire. His signature attack is dive bombing where he dives at great speed and then fires a precise and extremely explosive blast. It is strong enough to destroy a catapult and even knock down the Red Death while making the ground shake a little and sending a slight but noticeable shock-wave. He can also weaken his blasts enough to use them for non-violent purposes (like knocking people out of trees). This level of control also allows him to ricochet his shots off of other surfaces like cliff faces.
      • Shot Limit Recharge: While a Night Fury’s shot limit is unknown, it is implied to be six. There is a lot of uncertainty about the Night Fury's shot limit, even if most sources and even Hiccup himself states that Toothless' limit is six. In the final fight of the first film, he was able to fire more than ten shots, with seven full-powered blasts in quick succession. Later, in the episode "Frozen", Toothless' shot limit was counted to be about 14-15 shots. It's possible that the limit is six, but a Night Fury can reload its very quickly.
    • Saliva: Oddly, Toothless' saliva has an incredible amount of healing properties. However, this was only stated in "Defiant One" to heal Snotlout's tongue after eating some strange berries. It is possible Hiccup made this up, and the effect of the berries wore off. Hiccup also stated that Toothless' saliva doesn't wash out. It is also proven to be an effective adhesive, more than human saliva, as shown when Hiccup uses it to stick together parts of his map. It also can apparently fireproof objects when spread over them, as shown with his tail and Hiccup’s armor.
    • Swimming: Toothless is a great swimmer and has saved Hiccup from drowning several times in the process. He has also been seen sea skimming from one island to another. Sea Skimming is a particular way of swimming that, according to Hiccup, "it's like flying, but not". To perform this, Toothless dives and jumps out of the water continuously. This ability doesn't require for Toothless to be ridden by anyone, and he can do this all by himself.
    • Secondary Spines: Toothless' hidden ability, that was unknown even to himself. Revealed by Valka, those leathery flaps on the Back are flat fins-like spikes, placed in "V" shape and extending from his back to the end of the tail. They gave him more maneuverability and control in flight, almost like a second tail. According to the How to Train Your Dragon 2 Film Commentary, this ability is common to dragons.
    • Alpha Dominance Display: After being sufficiently enraged by Drago's Bewilderbeast, Toothless was able to "charge" himself in some way, it gives him more strength, stronger fire with seemingly no shot limit. This also gave him the more menacing look, with his back, nose, and mouth glowing blue color similar to his fire, probably because of amount and strength of this fire inside him. In this state, he challenged the Bewilderbeast and became the Alpha to all dragons at the end of How to Train Your Dragon 2. It is also shown that Toothless, when in Alpha mode, can ignore the Alpha dragon. However, some dragons are able to disregard his dominance. Baby dragons do not show regard to anyone and dragons in a panic or un-thinking frenzy will/are unable to listen. This is demonstrated in the graphic novel, Dragonvine, when a large group of frenzied Silkspanners fails to heed Toothless and catch him up in their webbing. It is also revealed that dragons that are drugged with Deathgripper venom are immune to his commands.

Weakness[]

Night Furies have very few weaknesses, making them hard to combat. While they have no unique weakness, they appear to have standard/common dragon weakness, but for some reason a dragon root arrow renders them weak and vulnerable for sometime, while sometimes other dragons can recover faster, as seen in "Enemy of My Enemy". They are also susceptible to the dragon root plant itself, allergic to eels, can be poisoned by blue oleander flowers, and are affected by Grimora parasites. Like all dragons, Night Furies also have a shot limit (but the exact number of shots tends to be inconsistent for Toothless as he is shown to recharge his shots very quickly), can be disoriented by loud noises (loud noises doesn't effect him badly as other dragons, thugh), and scratching a specific spot at the bottom of his neck will incapacitate him. The Night Furies' large wings make them vulnerable to powerful sheering winds if they were to attempt a prolonged hover in such conditions, as displayed in "Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man", but this could be said for most dragons with an average wingspan. Like other dragons, Night Furies are also susceptible to Deathgripper venom, with one vial being enough to subdue one into submission or knock them unconscious.

  • Tailfin Dependency: A primary weakness Night Furies have is that the dual tail fins on their tails allow them to remain stabilized in flight. If one is damaged, missing, or cut/sliced off, they will be unable to fly and are limited to only gliding. It is also stated above that altering/tampering the tail can tamper with the Night Fury’s speed.
  • Cold Temperatures: According to Grimmel the Grisly, Night Furies are unable to survive in consistently cold environments like the tundra, snowy mountains, or arctic islands. However repeatedly in several episodes like "Animal House" and "A Time to Skrill" it was shown that Toothless was in these environments and was able to survive in a cold environment without any discomfort. This implies that a Nighty Fury can't inhabit a cold place for an enormous amount of time, or this weakness doesn't apply to Toothless because during his time with Hiccup he developed an immunity to cold by regulating his body temperature with a buildup of energy, he has a much higher resilience to cold.
  • Flying Long Distances/Trackability: According to Grimmel the Grisly, Night Furies are also unable to fly for long distances without resting/sleeping, which can make them easy to track or hunt down. However, Toothless seems to be able to surpass this weakness himself as shown multiple times to go on for several weeks without resting or sleeping, as in "Live and Let Fly (Flight Club)" Hiccup stated that Toothless, in the previous episode, wasn't given food or water to survive but he was still able to fly and search for Hiccup.

Equipment[]

  • Prosthetic Tailfin: After being shot down and losing his left tail fin, Hiccup created an artificial prosthetic tailfin that allows Toothless to fly but they soon discovered that he needed Hiccup's help. Throughout the tv series the tailfin is repeated destroyed but Hiccup always has a spare. It was shown in the short "Gift of the Night Fury" that Hiccup made a automatic tailfin to allow Toothless to fly without him. Toothless later discarded that in favor of flying with Hiccup and the automatic one was also wasn't fireproof. Later on in "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World", Hiccup made a new automatic black one that is covered in Toothless’ scales and saliva for it to be fully fireproof for any dragon blast (including Night Fury ones). It later showed it was incapable of being destroyed by lightning and it can go on cloak form with Toothless.

Trivia[]

  • Toothless is also shown to have similarities with Stitch.
  • Toothless is not only similar to his book counterpart but he is also similar to Hiccup’s Windwalker as both are jet black, can fly really fast, and very loyal to Hiccup. Furthermore both are missing body parts from Viking attacks, with Toothless losing his tail fin to Hiccup's bolas and the Windwalker losing his right front limb to a dragon trap.
  • To make Toothless' vocalizations, the filmmakers recorded sounds of elephants, horses, tigers, domestic cats and jet engines to create the character's sound effects while Toothless' vocal effects are even provided by sound designer Randy Thom.
  • When Toothless begins glowing for his climactic battle against Drago's Bewilderbeast, the way his spines light up with blue as he shoots unlimited fire blasts is a possible reference to the famous monster Godzilla, whose spines light up with energy as he charges up and unleashes his atomic breath.
    • Coincidentally, both the American Godzilla film and How to Train Your Dragon 2 came out in the year 2014. Five years later, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World both came out in the year 2019. Just like the ending of the second film where Toothless became the Alpha Dragon after defeating Drago's Bewilderbeast, Godzilla becomes the Alpha Titan after defeating his nemesis King Ghidorah.
  • Despite Grimmel claiming that Night Furies cannot survive in the cold, Toothless has shown to enter cold environments and fly at high altitude (where it is also cold) but not feeling any discomfort while being in it. It possible that Grimmel was just mocking the Warlord or Toothless had learn to adapt to the cold environment and that this weakness doesn't apply to him. This would make sense as the Barbaric Archipelago, including Berk is often filled with snow and cold temperatures.
  • When Toothless uses his cloaking ability the electric aura is similar to the Skrill when it uses its's control over electricity, implying that these two dragons are distantly related/closest relative to each other due to their similarities as both dragons summon/use electricity, both species are the most feared, and are the fastest dragons on earth (Night Furies being the fastest and Skrills being the second fastest).
  • It is hinted a few times that Toothless has astraphobia (fear of lightning and thunder), which is ironic as Night Furies are referred to as the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." This could be due to the tail as it incorporates a lot of metal and lightning is attracted to metal. But in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, however, Toothless is shown channeling lightning into his body without any signs of fear, which suggests that he managed to overcome his fear of lightning.
