Tactical Observation and Pursuit Operative. He also plays a variety of musical instruments.
~ Atlanna describing Topo.

Topo is a minor character in the DC Extended Universe, but serves as a major character in the 2018 novel, Aquaman: Undertow, acting as a childhood friend to Arthur Curry. He later makes a minor appearance in the 2018 superhero film Aquaman, and becomes a more supporting character in its 2023 sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

He is a “Tactical Observation and Pursuit Operative” unit that works for Atlantis. Being an espionage combatant who is usually tasked with executing numerous stealth based operations but is also seen performing more menial matters.

Personality[]

Topo is portrayed as being a playful and very intelligent octopus, who is very loyal towards his homeland Atlantis. Being specifically designed as stealth unit, Topo is shown to adapt quickly to any changing situation. Possessing a flexible mind that allows him to navigate unexpected challenges without compromising his mission. Despite being an animal, it is implied that Topo is completely sapient, as he appears to be fully capable of advanced thinking and metacognition.

Story[]

Past[]

Topo was genetically designed by the Atlantians to act as a stealth unit for various operations and tasks. Assisting Atlantis in important missions while also during other menial tasks.

Aquaman: Undertow[]

Around the age of six, Arthur Curry encountered Topo during his walks along Amnesty Bay's shoreline, when he was still a young octopus. The playful octopus often approached Arthur, and their friendship began when Topo playfully tickled Arthur's foot. Astonishingly, whenever Arthur waved, Topo would reciprocate with a wave of its own.

As the years passed, Topo became a regular visitor to Arthur at the beach, and Arthur affectionately named the octopus Topo. When Arthur turned 13, he noticed Topo crawling onto the rocks, prompting a friendly reunion. Arthur observed that he hadn't seen Topo in a while, speculating that the octopus must have been occupied with other matters.

As Arthur strolled along the beach, Topo swam alongside him. During their seaside conversation, Arthur reflected on a recent incident at the Boston Aquarium where sea creatures seemingly protected him. This led Arthur to contemplate the possibility of having a unique ability to communicate with marine life. In a lighthearted moment, Arthur acknowledged the absurdity of sharing his problems with an octopus like Topo.

Weeks later, a fisherman named Gilly managed to capture Topo in Amnesty Bay. Upon learning of the octopus's capture, Arthur and his friend Claudia rushed to the dock. Topo, now larger than most local fishermen, occupied an eight-feet long tank.

Despite Arthur's efforts to persuade Gilly to release Topo, the fisherman was adamant. Gilly saw the opportunity to sell Topo to an aquarium and make some extra money. He assured Arthur that Topo would be well-cared for, but Mike exacerbated the situation by teasing Arthur about his fascination with sea creatures.

Concerned for Topo's well-being, Arthur, with Claudia's assistance, feigned an illness. As Gilly and the onlookers were distracted, Arthur telepathically communicated with Topo, urging the octopus to escape. Topo responded by forcefully thrashing against the tank, eventually causing it to overturn toward the ocean. In this tumultuous moment, Topo was freed, returning to the sea and swimming away to freedom.

Aquaman[]

Many years later, Topo would be present during the Ring of Fire duel between Arthur and King Orm Marius, Topo could be seen playing the war drums.
