Torako Koshi is the titular main protagonist of the comedy manga and anime series My Deer Friend Nokotan, or also known as Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan in Japanese.
She is a renowned student at her high school for her beauty and intelligence, who one day, on a seemingly normal to school, happened to come across a strange deer-hybrid girl by the name of Noko Shikanoko, who got stuck hanging on a power lines and rescued her upon initially hestitating. Noko just happens to be a new student at her school, in the same class, and even sits beside her, and soon starts bringing her into strange involvement around the school.
She is voiced by Saki Fujita in Japanese (who also voices Akagi in Kantai Collection, Seiko Kimura in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School, and Hatsune Miku in Vocaloid) and Roo Ryder in English.
Appearance[]
Torako is a beautiful teenage girl with long, blonde orange gradiant hair with a distinctive ahoge on top of her head and violet eyes. She is usually dressed in her standard female white Japanese school uniform consisting of a white sailor-style blouse with blue accents and a teal neckerchief, paired with a navy blue pleated skirt. She is also wearing knee-high socks and brown loafers.
Personality[]
Torako is a prideful and charismatic girl who takes great care of her image among her school community, as she initially decided to leave Noko-chan on the power-line but eventually helped Noko get down. As a former Yankee in the past, Torako must hide her past from anyone at all cost otherwise, all her efforts of building a great reputation would have been for nothing, according to her. Unfortunately for her, Noko-chan happens to know her secret and decides to expose this in front of her class on Noko's first day at school. Torako tries her best to keep her usual demeanor as Noko despite Noko's strange ways of conducting and the revelation of her secret. As Noko shows more gratitude toward her, Torako began to lose her temper due to the deer girl's nature and chose to threaten Noko to never talk to anyone about her secret as a former yankee. Eventually, Torako loses her cool with Noko after the deer she summoned mess up the sports festival and even proceeds to manhandle her, throwing about her stockpiled deer crackers to lure away the deer and scolding her. Fortunately, Torako is accepted for her true self by the school, leaving her happy but disappointed at how her efforts to put up a facade were all for naught.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Academic intelligence: Torako is a highly gifted student, being the top student in her level. Despite this, she seems rather bad at handling real-world situations such as the shenanigans Nokotan pulls.
- Charisma: Thanks to fashioning a "perfect student" persona, Torako is admired by almost everybody around her, causing her to be extremely charismatic to anybody she talks to. As such, she's quite an effective leader and maintains the respect of the student council quite well.
- Superhuman durability: Torako possesses the durability to keep up Nokotan's shenanigans, seeing as she managed to sustain getting blown up by an explosion from one of Nokotan's antler grenades (which destroyed an entire school gymnasium) with barely a scratch.
- Skilled close combatanat: Torako is a rather skilled hand-to-hand combatant, likely a result of her past as a delinquent gang leader. She was able to keep up with three delinquents attacking her with tasers and chains, all while completely unarmed.
- Fourth wall awareness: Like other characters in the series, Torako is keenly aware of her status as a fictional character, greeting the viewers a few seconds into the first episode and making references to other intellectual properties throughout the anime. In the manga, Torako maintains this ability but can also reach across comic panels to manipulate events.
Trivia[]
- Out of all students at her school (or among the main cast at least), Koshi is the only one to wear black socks for unknown reasons.
- Her first name uses the tiger kanji "虎" tora which means tiger in Japanese, reflecting to one of her nickname "Tiger Eye", presumably her hair color and her background as a delinquent as well.
- It is somewhat implied that Torako might be interested in Noko as despite having a love-hate relationship with her, she can't help but admit that being with her brings out the best in her and feels very strongly towards her, though she feels much less love than Noko feels towards her.
