Toramaru Ryuji is a supporting character in the manga and anime series Sakigake!! Otokojuku. He is one of the First Year students of the Otokojuku school for young men, who was kept away from other students as part of a special punishment until the time called for his assistance. He is first introduced during one of the school trials, where he joins Momotaro's team of First Years along J and Genji in their battle against their senior students. From there on he becomes a mainstay among the heroes, taking part in other Tournament arcs.
Appearance[]
Ryuji is a Japanese young man with jet black unruly hair with a mullet and some facial hair. He has a very strong build, evidenced by his feat of lifting a stone ceiling over his head for days straight as part of his captivity and punishment from the teachers. He is nearly identical to his father, who was one of Edajima Heihachi's allies during his early years in the military. He wears the Otokojuku uniform like all of his classmates but unlike them he is seen bare-chested most of the time. Come the events of the sequel and spin-off manga, Toramaru is seen in a more formal attire as a succesful businessman, though he dons his old clothes when summoned by his former classmates.
Personality[]
Toramaru is a care-free student with a tendency to sleaze his way through class. His attitude got him into trouble with the teachers, who subjected him to one of the ancient punishment techniques known to the school. After his confinement however, Ryuji shows a lot of manly qualities that make him worthy of his uniform and status, being able to endure all sorts of hardships for his new brothers in arms. He is one of the few additions to Momo's core team who didn't start out antagonistic towards him and never fought him, instead showing genuine affability to him from the get go. In combat, Toramaru's style reflects a lot about his nature. He uses brute strength and trickery instead of elaborate techniques in contrast with other fighters, chasing the advantage by any means available and coming up with techniques on the spot. In one occasion he even used his own farts coupled with a machstick to engulf his opponent in flames.
