~ Travis' note in the game. |
Travis Phelps is a major character in the 2016 video game Sally Face. Travis is the son of the Devourers of God's leader, Kenneth Phelps, and a notorious bully of Nockfell High, who has bullied Sal Fisher, as well as his other friends including Ashley Campbell and Todd Morrison, and was known to be homophobic towards them, as well.
However, most of Travis' personality stemmed from his fanatical father, as he was later revealed to be a closeted homosexual, and was abused regularly in the past because of it. Later on, Travis plays a major role in actively destroying his father Kenneth's cult as a spy, contributing to sacrifice himself by stabbing him, which resulted in him and Kenneth plummeting to their deaths in the Void, actively destroying the cult, once and for all.
Appearance[]
Travis has blonde hair and olive skin, and one of his eyes is bulging (likely originating from a bruise that stemmed from abuse by Kenneth). He has shoulder-length hair and red eyes from being possessed by the Plague of Shadows in "Memories and Dreams."
He's dressed in a light purple shirt, blue shorts, green socks, and blue shoes. In "Memories and Dreams" he is seen wearing the traditional Devourers' uniform in episode 5.
Personality[]
At first sight, he appears to be a normal bully who torments Sal and receives hostile treatment from the boy's friends, but in truth, he is a timid teenager who fears his own sexuality because of his zealous father.
Travis has been shown to have little care for how he treats other people as he has called Ash a "bitch" and subsequently labels Sal and Larry "flamers" while also hinting at them in the cafeteria by saying he "thought he smelled trash." He attempts to offend the other members of the friend group in addition to bullying Sal, in other words.
His father had instilled in him a lifelong lesson that it is odd and dishonourable to be attracted to one's own sex. This led him to utter harsh remarks about other people. As his father perceives homosexuality as a sign of weakness, Travis is frightened of being perceived as a decent kid in other people's eyes.
He is typically a pious child and attempts to get people to visit the Phelps Ministry despite his misgivings about his faith and its contradictory messages regarding the morality of his sexuality.
As Ashley described Bologna Day as "the crappiest lunch day," Travis also seemed to appreciate it, despite not knowing the actual origins of the bologna itself, which in turn portrayed him as oblivious.
History[]
Past[]
Travis is a the son of Kenneth Phelps, a Christian pastor. The Phelps Ministry, the neighbourhood church owned and operated by his family, dates back approximately 300 years, which also dated the creation of the Devourers of God. He frequently snaps at other people, notably Sal Fisher, as a result of growing up in a strict and religious home and being forced to repress his own sexuality (poor travis though).
Sally Face[]
One such time occurred in Sal's classroom the day before the annual bologna day. As Sal's teacher, Mrs. Packerton, converses with him throughout the test, he can be seen frowning at her. The teacher then chastises Travis for not returning to his paper.
Travis starts to taunt Sal in the school corridor after class with profanities and homophobic slurs. Following a brief exchange of words, Travis punches Sal in the face, drawing blood in the process, and then flees.
Travis criticises Sal and his group whenever he has the chance on Bologna Day while sitting alone and only being accompanied by flyers for the Phelps Ministry.
Following the successful retrieval of a sample of the school's bologna, Travis leaves a scrawled message on the floor near to a trash can in the boy's restroom where Sal and Travis eventually meet.
Although Sal converses with Travis, it is hinted that Travis is sobbing. Sal learns that he does not truly despise Sal or his friends, given his history of being abused. Sal receives an envelope with a page from Jim's journal after he had a heart-to-heart with him.
Despite not losing any loved ones in the mass murder at the Addison Apartments in 1999, Travis may have developed a close friendship with Sal since he attended the boy's trial. He was there when Sal was given the death penalty.
Following Sal's false execution, Travis served as an insider informant for Ashley and Neil, providing them with facts on the Devourers of God's operations and inner workings that were sufficient to demolish the Phelps Ministry and the temple below.
When Neil and Maple were both imprisoned, Travis tried to convince Ash to leave the church but brusquely pushed Ash to go whether she had the desire to destroy the temple or not. The two lost touch after that, but when the cult's plan's latter phases came to pass, he had a second chance to prove himself.
In the ensuing battle between Ashley and Kenneth, Travis drove a blade into the stomach towards his now-infected father, who admonished the boy for his betrayal but was met with resentment. In the end, Travis gave his life so the Void could be closed and played a key role in the fall of the Dark, and subsequently the destruction of the Cult.
Trivia[]
- Along with Todd Morrison and Neil, Travis is one of three homosexual characters that is present in the games.
- Travis eats lunch alone at the table, which would suggest that he doesn't have many or any friends with whom to mingle. Sal informs him that if "he took that stick out of his ass, [he] may actually enjoy [himself] for once. Maybe even make a friend or two."
