Trunks is a major character in the Dragon Ball franchise. He is the Saiyan/human hybrid son of Vegeta and Bulma and the older brother of Bulla. Like both Gohan and Goten, he is a Human-Saiyan hybrid.
He is voiced by the late Hiromi Tsuru as a baby and Takeshi Kusao in the Japanese version, Skip Stellrecht in the Animaze dub, Cathy Weseluck as a child and Alistair Abell as an adult in the Ocean Group dub, Stephanie Nadolny as a baby in DBZ, Laura Bailey as a child in the series and the game until Xenoverse 2, Eric Vale as a teenager/adult, Colleen Clinkenbeard as a baby in DBZ Kai and Alexis Tipton as a child in DBS in the various Funimation dubs, the late Jodie Forrest as a baby in the AB Groupe dub, Matthew Erickson in the Blue Water dub, Erica Mendez as a child in the Bang Zoom! dub and Celeste Perez as a mini in Dragon Ball Daima.
Appearance[]
Trunks has a distinct appearance, reflecting his mixed Saiyan and human heritage. He is generally depicted as a tall, slender, and muscular young man with a light skin tone, but also leaner than some other Saiyans, particularly after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where he bulked up considerably. His most notable features include blue eyes and either lavender or purple hair, which is straight and parted on the side. He also has Vegeta's facial features and eye shape, as well as his tanned skin.
Trunks is known for his signature outfit: a dark blue or indigo Capsule Corporation jacket, black tank top, gray pants, and golden boots. He also wears Saiyan battle armor similar to his father's during the Cell Games.
Trunks can transform into a Super Saiyan, which changes his hair color to gold and his eyes to green. He also has access to other Super Saiyan forms, such as Super Saiyan Third Grade (Super Trunks), which significantly increases his muscle mass but also decreases his mobility.
Powers & Abilities[]
Trunks is able to achieve the Super Saiyan form much earlier than his father and future counterpart. Due to a combination of his Saiyan heritage and having trained under his father Vegeta at an early age, Trunks is a capable fighter. He continuously trains with his father, Vegeta, in the Gravity Room because Vegeta wants Trunks to be stronger than Goten. While preparing for the 25th World Martial Arts tournament, training under 100 times gravity is challenging for Trunks. However, when he transforms into a Super Saiyan, he is able to move easily in the Gravity Room.
At the age of eight, he became the Junior Division Champion of the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament following his defeat of Goten (won by cheating). Due to his strong friendship and friendly rivalry with Goten, both are shown to work well as a team, this made him and Goten ideal candidates for learning the Fusion Dance. In the anime, after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for a week and managing to have Gotenks achieve Super Saiyan 3, Trunks states that he and Goten have become more than twice as strong as before.
However, it was too dangerous for Trunks (as well as Goten) to confront villains such as Majin Buu without either the assistance of the other Z Fighters and/or the use of the Fusion Dance to turn into the mighty Gotenks. When peace came after defeating Kid Buu, Trunks stopped training.
In Dragon Ball Super, Trunks only fought with Goten or fused with him, due to the extreme gap in power between himself and their enemies. Despite being fused as Gotenks, the duo often was overpowered by foes such as Beerus and Duplicate Vegeta, although they were able to damage Tagoma and were able to interest the newly revived Frieza. In the anime, Super Saiyan Trunks' power at maximum was enough for Goku to detect from Beerus' planet at the start of the "Future" Trunks Saga. After meeting his future counterpart, Trunks attempts to re motivate him by insulting him and attacking him as a Super Saiyan. While the fight was unseen, we are able to see post battle Trunks even as a Super Saiyan was not even a remote challenge for Future Trunks, who appeared no worse for wear while Trunks himself was completely exhausted.
By the time of the Universe Survival Saga, in the manga Super Saiyan Trunks was able to hold off multiple Cell Juniors at once, though he appeared to be at a disadvantage. Vegeta also tells Android 17 that Trunks is just as good as the Trunks 17 knew, despite being a kid.
In the second portion of the Super Hero Saga, Trunks and Goten have not trained in six months, however as Super Saiyans they prove able the just-awakened Cell Max alongside the Gamma Androids, who are impressed by their performance against the giant, however once Cell Max's power builds further he quickly overpowers the four.
In Dragon Ball GT at the start of the series it is stated that Trunks has not been training seriously. in the Black Star Dragon Ball Saga he is shown to be stronger than Pan in even his base form. He is able to kill Cardinal Mutchy Mutchy in his Super Saiyan form. He is also able to somewhat keep up with Goku against Luud. Trunks is also stated by Pan to be the second strongest on Earth (though he corrects her by saying Gohan, Piccolo & his father are stronger than him.) Dr. Myuu is interested in Trunks' power, and remarks that he'd make a fine Machine Mutant.
During the Super 17 Saga of Dragon Ball GT, in his base form - via a sneak attack - Trunks is strong enough to defeat Yakon with a single ki blast, and when he and Goten fire a combined ki blast at the off-guard Android 19 they are able to destroy him. Trunks also possesses sword skills, as shown when he wields the Brave Swordas an adult in Dragon Ball GT.
Personality[]
Upon his introduction in the Majin Buu Saga, Trunks is shown to have a vastly different personality compared to his future timeline self, mainly owing to his peaceful upbringing. Compared to the serious and cautious Future Trunks, whose apocalyptic circumstances molded him into a warrior, Trunks is much more cocky, prideful, and laid-back as a whole.
He greatly takes after Vegeta, inheriting his headstrong and competitive personality and believing him to be a hero, either despite or unaware of Vegeta's villainous past, and is very loving towards and protective of his family as a whole, not thinking twice about attacking Innocent Buu alongside Goten to save Vegeta. When finding out about Vegeta's death, he accuses Goku of being to scared to help despite Piccolotrying to explain that Vegeta had knocked Goku out prior. Like Vegeta, he also refuses to respect someone he does not like, assessing Goku as such and believing he is not as strong as his father, though he later gained more respect for Goku after witnessing his Super Saiyan 3transformation and subsequent fight with Buu. He is also proud of his Saiyan heritage and believes that the Saiyans are the mightiest warrior race ever known. Despite his attitude, Trunks was also taught by Vegeta to be obedient and well-mannered, and admits he is afraid of his father's discipline when he misbehaves.
Trunks shares Bulma's love for technology and, but has little interest in inheriting the family business, preferring to train rather than work. In Dragon Ball GT, while he is shown to be a capable president, he finds himself overwhelmed by work and escapes through his office window in the middle of his secretary's briefing. He possesses a tactical mind like his father and paternal grandfather, as demonstrated by his and Giru's deception of Dr. Myuu and his forces on planet M-2 during the Baby Saga.
He tends to be the ringleader of his and Goten's antics, leading him on due to being older and slightly stronger during childhood, but they are best friends and rivals nonetheless, with Goten's near-equivalent strength ensuring he was the only competitor Trunks fought seriously in the tournament's junior division, even forcing Trunks to use Super Saiyan when they initially agreed to stay in base form. They also fight well together, able to match the terrifying Bio-Broly with their teamwork. However, Trunks' arrogance, along with his and Goten's shared childishness, tends to sabotage their fusion Gotenks' battle performance, causing him to show off more often than he should.
While initially bewildered by his future self after meeting him in the "Future" Trunks Saga, Trunks quickly came to admire him, trying to emulate his cool attitude after becoming jealous that Mai was smitten with Future Trunks. When Future Trunks was sulking after another defeat from Goku Black, Trunks gave him a "pep talk" by berating him for moping around after one loss and trying to provoke him into fighting, demonstrating grit that resonated with Future Trunks and improved his resolve.
