The Tulpar Crew are the main protagonists of the 2024 psychological horror game Mouthwashing, developed by Swedish developer Wrong Organ.

They were a team of freighter operators aboard a long-haul freighter called the Tulpar, working under Pony Express. Their mission was to deliver a large supply of Dragonbreath mouthwash for over a year of continuous interstellar travel.

The original crew consisted of four members: Captain Curly, co-pilot Jimmy, mechanic Swansea, and nurse Anya. Without prior notice, a fifth member, intern Daisuke, was added to the crew.

Biography[]

During a routine shipment, the freighter spaceship Tulpar is sabotaged, causing it to crash into an asteroid. The crew survives, but most of the ship's resources are trapped within a protective foam, which if damaged, could breach the hull and lead to fatal decompression. Curly is severely injured in the crash, unable to move or speak, and relies on a dwindling supply of painkillers to stay alive. In response, Jimmy declares himself acting captain, accusing Curly of causing the crash due to a mental breakdown.

After two months with limited food and medical supplies, the crew decides to open their confidential cargo, only to find it filled with mouthwash. Desperate for sustenance, they drink it for the sugar and ethanol, leading to intoxication and heightened tensions. Eventually, Anya locks herself in the medical bay with Curly. When Swansea refuses to help him break in, Jimmy knocks him out with the ship's only bottle of rubbing alcohol and sneaks into the utility bay to find tools. In his search, he discovers Swansea was guarding the ship's last functional cryopod. Jimmy coerces Daisuke into crawling through a damaged vent to reach and rescue Anya and Curly. However, Daisuke sustains severe injuries, and his wounds become infected when Jimmy uses mouthwash as an improvised antiseptic. Swansea, who has been protective of Daisuke and intended the final cryopod for him, reluctantly euthanizes him with a fire axe before turning violently on Jimmy.

Flashbacks reveal that the Tulpar crew was scheduled to be laid off after completing this delivery. Curly breaks the news prematurely, leaving his crewmates distressed, as he is the only one financially secure for life after the mission. Later, Anya privately confides to Curly that she is pregnant with Jimmy's child, hinting that he sexually assaulted her. Curly tries to calm tensions with Jimmy, but Anya reveals her pregnancy to him in secret. The stress of his upcoming layoff and the prospect of facing responsibility for Anya's pregnancy eventually push Jimmy to sabotage the ship in a failed murder-suicide attempt.

Back in the present, Jimmy breaks into the medical bay, discovering that Anya has taken her own life with an overdose. He kills Swansea with the ship’s emergency revolver after Swansea denounces Jimmy’s cowardice and selfishness in his final moments. Mentally unraveling, Jimmy stages a mock birthday celebration with the corpses of his crewmates. In a twisted hallucination, he slices off part of Curly’s leg, consumes it, and then force-feeds Curly his own flesh. Through further visions, Jimmy faces accusations for his actions and his failure to accept responsibility. Convinced he can redeem himself, he places Curly in the cryopod, apologizes for his wrongdoings, and then takes his own life with the revolver. The credits roll as Curly is put into a 20-year cryosleep, leaving his fate uncertain.
