Mamoru Chiba (Darien Shields in the original English dub), otherwise known as Tuxedo Mask is the sole male of the Sailor Guardians. Of course, he's not really one of the guardians. As his name suggests, his appearance consists entirely of a tuxedo and a mask. He is the reincarnation of Prince Endymion of the Golden Kingdom.
In the original "Sailor Moon" series, in the episode before "Bad Hair Day", he is the brainwashed love interest of Queen Beryl, who ruled the Dark Kingdom, and he began working for her. After the defeat of Queen Beryl, he was freed from his brainwashing and became a good guy again.
In the Japanese version, Mamoru was voiced by Tōru Furuya in the original 90s anime and is currently voiced by Kenji Nojima for the anime reboot (Sailor Moon Crystal, Eternal, and Cosmos). In the English version, he was initially voiced by Rino Romano in the early DiC dub, but was later replaced by Toby Proctor for the remainder of that dub, and then Vincent Corazza for the CWI dub. Mamoru's current voice actor is Robbie Daymond for the Viz English adaption for both the redub of the first anime, and the English version of the anime reboot.
In the Nickelodeon dub of the Sailor Moon Crystal series, he will be voiced by Matt Shively.
'90s anime Biography[]
Prior to the Anime[]
During the Silver Millennium, Mamoru was Prince Endymion of Earth. After the Dark Kingdom attacked, he was one of the many to be sent to Earth to be reincarnated in the present day by Queen Serenity.
When reawakened, his life was shrouded in mystery, only knowing that his parents died in a car accident, which caused him to have retrograde amnesia, making him unable to remember prior to the accident.

Mamoru Chiba[]
Mamoru has black hair and blue eyes. He usually wears a black turtleneck tucked in his indigo pants pulled up to his waist with a bright light brown belt, along with a green sweater jacket and black or dark brown loafers.
Tuxedo Mask[]
Tuxedo Mask wears a black hat, a white mask, a black cape that's red on the inside, similar to a Count Dracula's, a black tuxedo, white shirt, white vest, white gloves and a white bow tie.
Personality[]
Mamoru is very protective of Usagi and has a good nature.
In the original anime, he started out more immature and frequently called Usagi "bun-head", much to her annoyance. Despite this, Mamoru does generally stop this negative treatment once the memories of their past lives and though his being kidnapped/brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom, and later losing his memories again upon being revived again following the fall of the Dark Kingdom, it was only upon regaining his memories at the end of the Hell Tree arc that they were finally able to enter a true relationship.
Abilities[]
Early in the series, Mamoru was unconsciously transforming into Tuxedo Mask whenever Sailor Moon was in trouble. After discovering his alternate identity, he could transform at will.
Trivia[]
- He is 17 at the start of the manga, and was also planned to be so by Naoko Takeuchi. In the 1st anime, however, he is also confirmed to be a 1st year University student (equivalent to a beginner college student in America). This is also stated in the anime's drama CDs.
- Usagi starts the series at 14 in her second year of middle school, but ages to 15 by June 30. The Japanese school year begins around April 1, meaning she is not 14 for very long at all; only around a few months.
- Usagi's age at the start of the series is confirmed by both Sailor Moon Crystal episode 2 "Act 2 – Ami, Sailor Mercury" (Ami's age is also displayed as "14" at one point) as well as the later Sailor Moon Eternal Edition (2019) of the manga.
- Mamoru has been captured and brainwashed the most throughout the series, probably due to how important he is to Usagi. Instances include:
- In the first season, he was kidnapped and brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom from episodes 35-46.
- In the first arc of the R season (episodes 47-59), Mamoru had lost his memories following the events of the first season, but there were no actions from the antagonists involved directly, but it still took him the longest to regain his memories.
- In the third season, he was kidnapped by Kaolinite in episodes 101-102.
- In the fifth season, he was taken control by Queen Nehellenia from episodes 167-172.
- He was also kidnapped by Fiore in the Sailor Moon R movie.
- This is to keep the focus on the female protagonists and the importance of theme. One possibility of such is showing that not only male characters can save the world, and that they also need and can depend on women. Also likely is because of his importance to Usagi.
- He is the first protagonist to be turned evil, when brainwashed by Queen Beryl.
- In the anime, Darien drives a red Alfa Romeo SZ.
- Chiba is a part of the greater Tokyo area.
- In the DiC English dub, Mamoru was named "Darien Shields" (the surname only appeared in the Mixx manga).
- In early promotional videos for the first English dub of the anime presented by DiC, Darien was called "Mark".
- Usagi loved Tuxedo Mask from the start, but originally disliked Mamoru because he constantly called her "bun-head" ("meatball head" in the original English dub), much to her annoyance. That changed after she regained her memories in season one and discovered that he was Tuxedo Mask.
- After he and Usagi form a couple, he called her "Usako" as an affectionate nickname in the Japanese version and later VIZ dub of the original series.
