~ Badd praising Gumshoe on his heroism. |
Tyrell Badd is a major character in Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and a minor character in Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit. He is a veteran police detective who has worked with the heroes many times throughout the duology and is revealed to be a member of the Yatagarasu who is a vigilante group who exposes secrets about corrupted governments and authority figures. He accepts his punishment after being arrested and eventually retires from his job after achieving his decade long goal of defeating the Cohdopian smuggling ring and avenging the death of Byrne Faraday.
History[]
IS-7 Incident[]
In December 2000, Badd was assigned as the head detective to the IS-7 case, which involved a world famous TV chef named Samson Tangaroa being accused of murdering one of his contestants, Paul Halique. Despite being the head detective involved with the case, Badd had to step back numerous times due to veteran prosecutor Manfred Von Karma wanting to investigate everything himself and objecting entry from all other authority figures.
Once Gregory Edgeworth arrived with his assistant Eddie Fender, Badd was initially distrustful and annoyed by their presence but after seeing Edgeworth's skill and logical abilities, Badd decided to assist their investigation by verifying information and giving Gregory a chance to meet with Tangaroa again. and after Gregory had proven that Manfred was hiding something, he decided that after Manfred had taken him off the case, he helped him and Eddie in any way possible which would become an importance a year later.
After hearing Edgeworth's claims about the body not having been found yet, Manfred panicked and went into court with a forged autopsy report. which resulted in the trial dragging on for an entire year until Samson finally admitted to the crime.
However, Gregory had planned a year ahead as he told Badd to record Manfred's interrogation of Tangaroa which included Tangaroa being coerced into confessing to the murder otherwise Judy Bound, his adoptive daughter would get in trouble. After the court heard the interrogation, Tangaroa was still convicted but as an accomplice rather then the culprit and it earned Manfred his only penalty in his at that point 26 year long career.
KG-8 incident[]
In 2009, Badd and his friend Byrne Faraday were investigating the Cohdopian smuggling ring and found that the Amano group may be involved with it.
They found a witness from the group who was willing to testify named Cece Yew. Badd was ordered to protect her in case the smuggling ring found out about her defecting from the Amano group. Unfortunately the smuggling ring found about her involvement and they went to her apartment to murder her. Manny Coachen managed to make it past Badd due to him being shot at by other smuggling ring members and made it to Cece's room and stabbed her to death.
This caused Badd to feel immense guilt for not being able to protect her and he decided to help Byrne convict Coachen in the upcoming trial. Byrne had decisive proof ready which was a video tape of Coachen entering the victim's apartment. However it was stolen from Faraday by the Amano group and it left them with no direct proof that Manny was the culprit causing him to be acquitted and Cece's "sister" Calisto Yew to feel great sadness over her death.
This prompted Badd, Byrne, and Calisto to form a vigilante group named "Yatagarasu" which was supposed to help them catch criminals who were above the law such as Coachen and this went on for 3 years until the second KG-8 incident occurred.
Turnabout Reminiscence[]
On September 8th 2012, the Yatagarasu struck the Cohdopian embassy to reveal the secrets of who was the leader of the smuggling ring. A man named Deid Mann wanted to testify about the embassy's shady dealings however, he was killed by a mercenary named Mack Rell however Rell was caught on tape and Badd brought him in for interrogation.
Badd asked questions to Rell about the Yatagarasu card he had on him due to Rell lying about being the Yatagarasu but Rell knew absolutely nothing about it which Badd had as a backup plan in case Rell decided to lie about being the Yatagarasu in court. During the trial of Deid Mann's murder, Rell lied in court about being the Yatagarasu but it was proven to be a lie so instead, Rell decided to accuse Byrne of being the Yatagarasu, causing the trial to be put on hold while Byrne went to question him. Unfortunately Byrne and Rell were found dead some time after. Badd decided to investigate the case but Manfred Von Karma (who was there to be Miles Edgeworth's assistant for his first trial) requested Badd to hand over investigative rights to Edgeworth and his daughter, Franziska von Karma.
Badd was again initially distrustful and annoyed by their presence but after Miles proved his competence, Badd opened up about the information on the KG-8 incident and the second KG-8 incident and offered to help their investigation. During Miles' interrogation of Calisto, he accidentally gives the Yatagarasu key to Yew who reveals herself as the person who hired Mack Rell to kill Deid Mann and she was the one who killed Mack and Byrne, causing Badd to become furious at her and he pursues her.
She manages to escape unfortunately and Badd gets a new bullet hole in his trench coat as a result of the chase. He then returns to the courtroom and tells Dick Gumshoe that while lying under testimony is unforgivable, he was doing it to protect Byrne's daughter, Kay Faraday and her feelings due to her breaking a promise she made with her father to not take things from strangers or interact with them which he praises Gumshoe for and tells him be might have a chance at being a real detective as long as he does not lose his detective spirit.
Turnabout Visitor[]
Seven years after the events of Turnabout Reminiscence, Badd had decided to work towards getting the pieces of evidence to take down Calisto in order to get revenge for everything she had done.
He remembered about putting the Yatagarasu card into the KG-8 files a decade ago and went to Miles Edgeworth's office (which was Faraday's office formerly) and found the KG-8 files along with the Yatagarasu card. Edgeworth returned to his office at this time and Badd held him at gunpoint from behind. He shoots the frame Miles's old prosecutor jacket is in before leaving and takes the relevant pages and the Yatagarasu card out of the case file, before leaving it under a sofa in the hallway outside the prosecutor's office.
After this Jacques Portsman (who was a corrupt prosecutor involved with the smuggling ring) came to retrieve the video tape and the card. While he managed to retrieve the video tape momentarily before his arrest, he could not find the card anywhere as Badd was already long gone with it.
Turnabout Ablaze[]
Later that day, Badd saw that the Yatagarasu was going to attack the Cohdopian embassy in the news and decided to join in on Shi-Long Lang's investigation hoping to find Calisto there. After Miles manages to deduce that the Yatagarasu was not 1 person but a 3 person team involving a defense attorney who can know the layout of the Yatagarasu targets, a prosecutor who can learn the security measures that are guarding the targets thanks to Little Thief which Kay inherited and a detective who could be in charge of the Yatagarasu cases and make sure no evidence links to the identity of the Yatagarasu being revealed, Badd reveals himself as the detective member of the Yatagarasu and points a gun at Shih-na (revealed to be Calisto) and takes a shot at her after she attempts to escape by taking Kay as a hostage. However Lang takes the bullet and Badd calls him an idiot due to the fact he could have killed him but Lang tells him that Shih-na is his subordinate and therefore his responsibility.
Before going to jail, Badd hands the Yatagarasu card, the KG-8 incident files, and the video tape from the KG-8 incident over to Edgeworth, telling him that he will need them when he is taking on someone who is above the law and while they were illegal, it was up to Edgeworth whether he used them or not, before telling Gumshoe to put handcuffs on him and take him away.
Credits[]
In a very short scene, Eddie asks Badd about the IS-7 incident and Badd agrees to testify about the Incident for Eddie due to Judy Bound being revealed as the culprit for the attempted poisoning of Carmelo Gusto.
Personality[]
Badd was a very professional and grumpy man who while welcoming of certain people, got annoyed easily by others incompetence and those who were a hindrance to the investigation, shown with him being generally dismissive and annoyed by the presences of Gregory, Eddie, Miles and Franziska, before coming to respect them once they prove they are just as skilled as he is. He was also no nonsense when it came to people being rude as well, intimidating Franziska into not trying to hit him again with her riding crop after managing to dodge it and standing up to von Karma when he badmouthed the recently deceased Faraday for supposedly being incompetent.
Despite his intimidating exterior, Badd has a softer side to him, shown when he breaks the rules of not giving anything to inmates in the detention center so that Jeffrey could have his favourite chocolates after a traumatizing experience and when he acts as a new surrogate father to Kay when Byrne was killed. He also has a fondness for lollipops, always being seen eating one whenever he appears and he also has a habit of looking at himself in a handheld mirror, though he claims it's so he can have eyes on the back of his head in case a situation arrives where he needs to be able to look both ways.
While he was already pessimistic even prior to the KG-8 incident, the KG-8 incident and the second one afterwards caused Badd to be consumed by guilt and remorse for not being able to save the people around him, worsening his pessimism to a large degree. This also caused him to become obsessed with stopping Calisto Yew, dedicating the next seven years of his life to stopping her and the smuggling ring while not having any interest in anything not related to the Yatagarasu. After the events of the first Investigations game, it seems that Badd has grown tired of police work and wants to retire due to not only being decently old, but also because he had achieved his decade long goal.
