“ | Do not be afraid. I am U-Mos, Sentinel of the Luminoth. Please listen, and hear of our world's peril. | „ |
~ U-Mos |
U-Mos is the deuteragonist of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. He is the fifth sentinel of the Luminoth and the son of the late V-Mos, who was the third sentinel. By the time of the events of the game, he is one of the few surviving members of the Luminoth as a result of their war with the Ing after a meteor crashed on their planet and created a dark counterpart to Aether called Dark Aether, which also created the Ing, who sought to steal all of their planetary energy so that Aether would be destroyed and they could go on to conquer and destroy other civilizations. He guards their only remaining Energy Controller in the Great Temple and helps Samus by guiding her to areas without going with her.
Appearance[]
Like the rest of his kind, he is a brown insect-like humanoid alien with wings and red eyes. He is also quite tall, towering at least an entire foot above Samus, probably putting him at around 7 feet.
Biography[]
Because of the war with the Ing that resulted in most of their people being wiped out and the energy from most of their temples being stolen, leaving their world on the verge of collapse, sometime before Samus arrives, U-Mos ordered the rest of the surviving Luminoth to go into stasis chambers in the Great Temple's Sanctuary and wait until their criss was over since it was evident they would all perish if they kept fighting the Ing. In the meantime, only he remained conscious to protect their one remaining source of energy in the Great Temple itself so that their world wouldn't perish altogether and could only pray for his people's salvation. Thankfully, this eventually came in the form of Samus Aran, and not a moment too soon since shortly after her arrival, she defeats an Alpha Splinter in the Temple's Sanctuary that was in possession of the Energy Transfer Module and had presumably come with it to steal the energy from the Great Temple that he was guarding.
Upon her arrival in the temple, he tells her about what happened to Aether. He then tells her about the Ing, how Dark Aether was born, the dire situation his people were in and that she is the Luminoth's only hope to save Aether. He also explains that the Ing have stolen the energy from three of their temples located in the Agon Wastes, Torvus Bog and Sanctuary Fortress respectively, and that she must use the Energy Transfer Module that she just took from them to transfer the energy from Dark Aether back to those tempels to stabilize their world. However, he cannot go with her in person since he has to guard their only remaining energy controller in the Great Temple, as well as his fellow Luminoth. Between venturing to each of these lands, successfully getting into the temple on Dark Aether's equivalent of those lands, taking the stolen energy from their temples and returning it to the respective temples in their world, U-Mos will summon Samus to the Great Temple by temporarily sealing the way to the next land so that he can provide her with important information concerning where she is about to go and what dangers to expect.
After Samus successfully restores energy to each of the three other Energy Controllers, U-Mos will summon her again to note that there is still one Energy Controller in Dark Aether remaining in the Sky Temple, which is guarded by Emperor Ing, the strongest of their kind. However, to get there, Samus needs to find nine Sky Temple Keys. U-Mos gives her the Light Suit, which is powered by the Light of Aether itself, so that she'll be able to accomplish this task, which is completely immune to the negative, damaging effect of Dark Aether's atmosphere, allows her to travel through Dark Water and walk through Ingstorms without being harmed, and allows her to ride on Light Shafts. After Samus successfully tracks down all the keys, enters the Sky Temple, defeats Emperor Ing, takes their last source of energy and escapes before Dark Aether completely collapses, she is greeted back on Aether by U-Mos and the other Luminoth, who he has presumably woken up from stasis now that the crisis is over. After having also returned their technology back to them (such as the Light Suit), they all non-verbally express their gratitude to her by bowing as she departs for her ship, to which she responds to with a wave of her hand.

Trivia[]
- Unlike the Baby Metroid, Rundas, Goro, Gandrayda and the Thoha Tribe, U-Mos is one of Samus' rare extraterrestrial allies not to die.
- The design of his species strangely resembles to the Geonosians, an antagonistic race of aliens from the Star Wars franchise.
