Biography[]
War for Cybertron Trilogy[]
Backstory[]
Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime were students of Alpha Trion, who taught them to fight against the corruption infesting Cybertron. Magnus grew close to their ally, Megatron, who he saw as a brother, and the two fight together at the Battle of Tarn-Hauser Gate.
After Megatron betrayed and killed Trion, Ultra Magnus was entrusted with his mentor's "Alpha Trion Protocols", while Optimus was chosen by the Matrix of Leadership to become the next Prime. Over the many years of war, Cybertron was reduced to a shell of it's former self, and Ultra Magnus grew increasingly weary of the war, though he still highly respected Optimus.
Siege[]
After Megatron had offered a treaty to Optimus Prime, which he had rejected, Ultra Magnus told him that he felt the eternal struggle was useless. Magnus tried to convince him to sign the treaty and after Optimus declined, he frustratedly left. Later, Ultra Magnus donned a cloak and arrived at the Decepticon base to negotiate a peaceful end to their conflict.
After gaining an audience with Megatron, Ultra Magnus talked of their shared history, and pleaded to Megatron for peace. Megatron was unswayed by his argument, and demanded that Magnus ordered his army to stand down. Magnus refused, and was imprisoned in a cell. After overhearing Shockwave and Megatron plan to find the AllSpark and reformat the Autobots into Decepticons, Magnus sent a secret warning to the Autobots. Soundwave detected it, and the infuriated Megatron elected to have a false message to dupe the Autobots into a trap. When the trap failed, Megatron visited Ultra Magnus in his cell and demanded the location of Autobot headquarters. Magnus refused, and Megatron then decided to go forward with his plans for the Allspark.
Ultra Magnus continued to resist interrogation attempts, and Shockwave requested that Megatron use harsher methods to extract information from his prisoner. With some reluctance, Megatron authorized Shockwave to do so, and Magnus was hung and mercilessly tortured by the Decepticon scientist. Megatron and Jetfire witnessed the torture, both with some discomfort, but Magnus still refused to reveal the location of the Autobot base. After Magnus was knocked down and about to be taken back to his cell, he suddenly sprang into action, knocking down the guards and stealing a weapon. He charged at Megatron and Jetfire as they were departing and pointed it at Megatron, demanding the Decepticon leader turn and face him. However, Megatron was confident that Magnus would not shoot him in the back and dared the Autobot to do so. Magnus was unable to pull the trigger, giving Jetfire the opportunity to disarm and take him down. Bound and tortured again, this time severely enough to cause serious physical damage, a dying Magnus finally relented and told Megatron that he would reveal the location of the Autobot base.
Chained up, Ultra Magnus led Megatron and the Decepticons to a burial ground at the Tarn-Hauser Gate, indicating that the Autobots had their headquarters beneath Alpha Trion's memorial. However, after Magnus opened the memorial's door, the Decepticons found nothing but an empty room. Ultra Magnus faced Megatron with a smirk and told him once again that he would never betray the Autobots. Enraged, Megatron aimed his fusion cannon at Magnus's chest and fired, executing his former comrade instantly. Magnus's body slumped to the ground, and upon his death, the Alpha Trion protocols were released as a cloud of energized data that plummeted into the sky, eventually finding a new host in Bumblebee. At Autobot headquarters, Optimus Prime sensed his death and was grieved to realize that Ultra Magnus had died. He set out to inform the Guardians of Magnus's death. Ultra Magnus's execution would be the final straw for Jetfire, who decided to defect and join the Autobots.
Legacy[]
Back at Decepticon headquarters, Soundwave identified the energy released by Magnus' body as an undecipherable protocol that they could not track. Shockwave proposed using a computer virus he had been developing in secret to erase the code (incidentally crippling processing systems planet-wide) and deploying it using Ultra Magnus' corpse as the hub. Megatron agreed to this and Magnus' body was strung up and used to infect all of Cybertron with Shockwave's virus.
The mistreatment of Magnus' body had not yet ended, however, as Megatron kept the now severed head of his old friend on his table, even speaking to it at times. His head remained in view when the captive Elita-One was bought before Megatron. Elita was horrified to see what Megatron had done to Magnus, and after she was hauled away, Megatron scowled to the lifeless head, telling it not to look at him that way.
On Earth, Megatron suffered a Matrix-induced hallucination of himself grabbing the Allspark before it turned into Ultra Magnus's head and he sank into the ground. The Allspark later appeared to Optimus Prime in the form of Ultra Magnus. Believing the Autobot leader to be Nemesis Prime, the projection took on red eyes and rose to the sky to attack him. Megatron battled a similar projection, though the battle was cut short by Predacon Megatron and Starscream.
When the AllSpark was returned to the Temple of the Allspark on Cybertron by Bumblebee, Ultra Magnus was among the Transformer spirits who witnessed Elita strike down Galvatron and Nemesis Prime before finally reuniting with the Allspark.
