Lipiah, better known as Ultraman (nicknamed as Shin Ultraman to differentiate from his original counterpart) is the titular main protagonist of the 2022 film of the same name. He is alien from the land of light who one day bonded with a human after witnessing him sacrifice his life in order to protect a kid from the collateral damage he caused during his arrival on Earth.
History[]
In response to multiple Kaiju attacking Earth, the Planet of Light sent Lipiah to watch over it. Upon arriving, he was immediately greeted by the monster Neronga, a monster who could turn invisible and could feed on electricity. Despite giving the SSSP genuine trouble, Lipiah shrugged off everything it threw at him and eventually defeated it using his Spacium beam and flew off. Unfortunately during his arrival on Earth, he had accidentally killed a man Shinji Kaminaga who he saw risk his life to protect a kid who didn’t evacuate on time. Out of remorse and respect for the man’s selflessness, he took on his likeness and brought the kid to safety before later rejoining the rest of Shinji’s crewmates in order to learn more about humans while also protecting them as well. Following this, Lipiah was eventually given the name “Ultraman”.
Not too long after this, another monster similar to Neronga (and another monster Pagos) named Gabora showed up and began heading its way to a nuclear waste facility in order to feed on it. The SSSP attempted to stop the monsters by having the American forces bomb it, however it ultimately failed. Realizing they were in trouble, Kaminaga transformed into Ultraman and began battling it. Unbeknownst to him, his transformation just so happened to be caught on cameras nearby. Similar to the first fight, Ultraman won.
The next threat would be soon show up in the form of another alien Zarab whom made his introduction knocking out the SSSP’s power with his "accidental" electromagnetic interference upon landing there. Zarab introduced himself to the Japanese government under the goal of helping humanity. However, Ultraman soon found out his true plan to cause internal conflict between humanity so that they would wipe each other out, culminating in Zarab knocking him out and tying him up while also trying to ruin his image by pretending to be him and attacking a city. Additionally, Zarab also posted a video showing him transforming into Ultraman. Luckily, his crewmates were able to find him thanks to clues he left behind. Kaminaga then transformed into Ultraman and fought his imposter before later exposing the latter as Zarab and eventually defeating him.
Once Zarab was defeated, another alien named Mephilas made his introduction by enlarging and mind controlling SSSP member Hiroko Asami using a device of his own called the Beta box which worked similar to Ultraman’s beta capsule in that it allowed him to grow big. Mephilas showed himself to the government and made deals with them involving the Beta box which would weaponize humans and would make them immune to all forms of damage like Ultraman so that they could protect themselves against kaijus and other threats from outer space. In reality, he wanted to use them as resources and have Earth for himself while also making them fear and really on extraterrestrials. This eventually culminated in Ultraman fighting Mephilas and trying to stop him. However, Mephilas eventually gave up his plan after noticing Ultraman’s superior Zōffy.
Ultraman later visited the place where Kaminaga died. There Zōffy expressed his disproval of where humanity was heading due to the Beta System's compatibility with humans, making them viable bioweapons for the multiverse to exploit. In addition, Lipiah's act of fusing with another lifeform meant he violated a severe law in the Land of Light and must therefore be trialed in the Land of Light. Moreover, Zōffy also summoned the Ultimate Celestial Suppression Weapon, Zetton to wipe out all of humanity. Determined to put a halt to all this, Ultraman became one with Kaminaga and gave it his all after leaving behind a pen drive in the SSSP office. But it was all useless as Zetton was too powerful and Ultraman could not deal any damage to the massive superweapon.
After Kaminaga's hospitalization, Taki and Yumi uncovered the pen drive Kaminaga left behind and found several pieces of game-breaking information about the Beta System after a long discussion with the greatest minds of Earth. Taki eventually devised a plan that would involve Ultraman activating the Beta Capsule twice to open up a sixth-dimensional portal which Ultraman could use to throw Zetton into. However, the whole plan had to be executed in exactly one millisecond.
The plan was a success, but Ultraman was pulled into a wormhole alongside the now-destroyed Zetton.
Zōffy, sensing Ultraman's desire to live found him inside a strange dimension and saved him. Zōffy was impressed by the humans' ability to defeat Zetton, which led him to spare them, but Ultraman must head back to the land of light to face a trial for breaking the laws of his home world. Unwilling to let Kaminaga die, Ultraman requested Zōffy to transfer his life force to Kaminaga so that he could live on as the lifespan of his species is far longer than that of humans, to which Zōffy initially questioned but eventually obliged and both Ultraman's, as well as Kaminaga's bodies, were separated and the latter's life-force was transferred to Kaminaga, leading to the eventual demise of Ultraman.
Abilities[]
- Manipulation of Spacium-133: Ultraman can utilize an element known as Spacium-133 (which is the same element that his body is mainly composed of) to aid him in combat
- Spacium Beam: Ultraman can charge up large amounts of Spacium on his palm and fire a powerful beam towards his enemy. This move has high destructive power but may drain large quantities of Ultraman's energy. It is also his signature ability.
- Ultra Slash: Ultraman can form a buzzsaw-like energy disc in his hand and toss it at foes, easily slicing through monsters. He can also use a giant-sized version of the Ultra Slash that can split into many smaller discs upon being thrown.
- Rebound Beam: Ultraman can generate a transparent, rectangular shield in the air to block off incoming attacks.
- Size Change: Unlike the Beta Box, Ultraman's Beta Capsule is merely an 'ignition' device, the cost of expanding in size and maintaining that stature draws upon his internal energy reserves.
- Durability: As Zarab stated, even in human form, Ultraman is very durable. That is why Zarab decided to hold him captive rather than kill him because it would be 'difficult if hypothetically this durability seemed to extend to his human form. Besides, when Kaminaga fell from orbit into the ocean, his body was still recoverable and he laid dormant until Zetton's activation awoke him. While not directly stated or shown, Shinji was held for a considerable time by Zarab and showed no signs of starvation or fatigue, implying he can also go without eating longer than a human.
- Flight: Ultraman flies by manipulating the Spacium 133 in his body to distort gravity.
- Manipulation of the Beta System: Ultraman utilizes a type of interdimensional technology known as the Beta System (β-system) to his benefit.
- Travel Sphere: Ultraman can turn himself into a red sphere of light which allows him to reach his maximum flight speed with the help of the Beta System.
- Planck Brane Traversal: Using the same method he uses to transform, Ultraman can instead transfer himself to the Planck Brane dimension and navigate it. He can leave it for regular space whenever he wishes.
- Beta System-Based Immunity: Via the properties of the Beta System used in his transformation, Ultraman has an almost absolute form of immunity against virtually any form of damage including physical harm, electricity, and radiation. However, other beings using the Beta System can hurt him, and getting pulled into a black hole is seemingly fatal regardless
