Umi Matsuzaki (松崎海 Matsuzaki Umi) is the main character of the 2011 animated Studio Ghibli film, From Up On Poppy Hill. She is the daughter of a sailor who inspires the members of The Latin Quarter to renovate the clubhouse. And the love interest of the deuteragonist Shun Kazama.
In the original Japanese version she was voiced by Masami Nagasawa (kanji. 長澤 まさみ, Nagasawa Masami) as a teen who voiced Ash in the Japanese dub of Sing, and played a Shobijin in Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. while as a child she was voiced by Aoi Watanabe. In English, she was voiced by Sarah Bolger as a teen and child, who also played Mallory Grace in The Spiderwick Chronicles, Aurora in the television series Once Upon a Time, Eleanor Lamb as a teen in BioShock 2 and Sabina Pleasure in Alex Rider.
Personality[]
Umi Matsuzaki is overall very responsible, helpful, kind, and loyal. She actively goes out of her way to help other. Without expecting any reward from them. She states that she enjoys the company of everyone in the manor. She does most of the work in the manor, such as laundry, cooking, washing, and other chores in the manor.
Umi is shown to have a fondness of the Latin Quarter, stating that it's such a nice building. Suggesting she may have a fondness of things of the past. Which possibly stems from losing her father at a young age. Though she was still reluctant to go in there until Sora asked her to.
The thing that most people know about Umi is that she raises flags in memory of her late father, who died in the Korean War. She loved him so much, that she raised his flags everyday in the Korean War when he was away. And when he passed away she still raised his flags everyday, even stating that she never missed a day.
Umi can get upset when something happens unexpectedly, especially when it comes to Shun Kazama doing something unexpected. However, she never begrudges anything for that long, and will forgive anyone in a short time. Or never begrudge it at all.
Umi's love for Shun while rocky at first due to him jumping into a pool for the Latin Quarter's anti-demolition campaign. Her love for him quickly grows when she helped him with his newspapers. And when he helped her get to the market place to buy pork. Even though both Shun and Umi believed they were siblings, Umi still admired to Shun that she would still loved him, and that would never change. He replied that he felt the same way.
When Yoshio Onodera stated to Umi and Shun that they were not related by blood, Umi and Shun looked together romantically, hinting that they'rre love is stronger than ever.
Appearance[]
In casual, she wears a lilac shirt with a pink coat and pink dress. During school she wears a Japanese high school uniform that features a white shirt with dark blue trim, a dark blue skirt, a red ribbon (second year). Her hair is done in braided pigtails.
Etymology[]
In the original manga her surname is Komatsuzaki (小松崎)
- (小, ko) means: "small".
- (松, matsu) means: "pine tree, fir tree".
- The surrounding area has a lot of trees. But this might just be a coincidence.
- (崎, saki/zaki) means: "cape, peninsula".
- This may be in reference to the fact that they live near the sea. As the manor is in a peninsula or promontory.
- Similarly the story is set in Yokohama which means "Near the coast".
- Furthermore (海, umi) means "sea". And (meru) her nickname is a transliteration of the French word "Mer" which means sea as well.
- This is fitting as she is the first child of a sailor. And the fact that the story is set in near the sea.
- Her siblings' names also mean geographical terms.
- Her sister's name "Sora" means "Sky"
- Her brother's name "Riku" means "Land"
Trivia[]
- In the original version of the film, Umi does not narrate in the beginning. However to give clarification to Western audiences, as they are culturally different. Umi narrates in the beginning of the English dub.
- Her name, and the names of her siblings are the same in meaning to the main trio in Kingdom Hearts: Sora, Kairi, and Riku.
- Although Kairi's name is not Umi, they share the same kanji character for their given name: "海".
- One of the main themes of the film is to not let go, or forget about the past. But rather build on it, sustain it, or cherish it. Umi does things in the film to represent this theme, making her symbolic.
- She raises her flags everyday in remembrance of her father, who passed away on his ship due to a land mine.
- She inspired Shun and the other students to renovate the Latin Quarter, which they all see as a cultural landmark. And thus a thing of the past.
- Umi is shown wearing a blue dress in the Japanese poster drawn by Hayao Miyazaki. However, she never wears it in the film.
