Hero Overview

I am Uryū Ishida, LAST OF THE QUINCY!
~ Uryū Ishida
That was the day I decided… I would never become a doctor. If the job of a doctor requires him to mutilate even the body of his beloved, dead wife, then that’s not something I would ever consider…
~ Uryuu think about what Ryūken does.
It's a good thing Orihime is not here. I wouldn't want her to see what I'm going to do to you. A girl like her should never have to witness a battle like this. Now I swear by the honor of the Quincy...I'M GOING TO KILL YOU, YOU MONSTER!!
~ Uryu Ishida to Mayuri Kurotsuchi.
The right to choose life or death lies with the victor, and the victor of this battle is me. From her perspective, my leaving her alive here might seem like an insult, but I have no intention of doing things their way.
~ Uryu Ishida to Pesche Guatiche about Cirucci Sanderwicci.

Uryū Ishida is one of the main characters of the Bleach franchise. He is a student at Karakura High School, where he is a classmate and friend of Ichigo Kurosaki. He is a Quincy who has a grudge towards the Shinigami for killing the Quincies, including his grandfather.

He was originally believed to be the last of the Quincy (shared with his estranged father Ryūken) until it was revealed that a group of them escaped from the Human World into the Seireitei, forming an empire called the Wandenreich which Uryū becomes a double agent of, in order to kill the ruler Yhwach, who was responsible for the death of Uryū's mother, Kanae.

He is voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama in the Japanese version of the anime and by Derek Stephen Prince in the English version, and he was portrayed by Ryo Yoshizawa in the 2018 live-action film, the former who portrayed Ryusei Sakuta/Kamen Rider Meteor in Kamen Rider Fourze.

Personality[]

After the battle with Captain Kurotsuchi, Uryū came to believe that Ichigo and Rukia were completely free of any part in the death of his Grandfather. However, he never did trust the Gotei 13, seeing Mayuri and Rukia's execution as prime examples of corruption in the Soul Society. After the conclusion of the Soul Society Arc and saving Rukia, Uryū became an open friend and supporter of Ichigo, though he would frequently snipe and criticize him in any failing he saw as situations arose. Though Uryū dislikes Soul Reapers, he is still willing to work with them if he is convinced there are decent sized threats such as mass Hollow attacks. His association with Ichigo and Rukia is seen as a sign of weakness of character by Uryū's father, who is also a Quincy, but unlike Uryū and his grandfather, never viewed the Soul Society as worth agreeing with, instead seeing it as just more trouble than it was worth to continue slaying Hollows if it meant making enemies of the Soul Reapers.

Background[]

Born the son of Kanae Katagiri and Ryūken Ishida, Uryū Ishida is a Quincy, part of an ancient order of mortal demon hunters who oppose and undermine the work of the actual Spirit World's protectors, Soul Reapers. Due to the fact that Quincy use a spiritual technique that eradicates souls instead of redeeming them, the Quincy and Soul Reapers came to blows when the Quincy refused to stop killing Hollows, corrupted human souls turned to monsters. As a result of this, the Soul Reapers declared war on the Quincy and began to systematically kill them to prevent innocent souls from being permanently destroyed. Uryū's grandfather was able to strike up a peace accord with the Soul Society promising that though he would continue to practice Quincy traditions, he would not use his techniques to slay Hollows, thus earning him, his son and grandson mercy from the otherwise order-wide kill order. Uryū's grandfather taught Uryū about both Quincy tradition and history and discouraged his grandson from using his powers on an soul, even corrupted ones like the Hollows.

One day, Uryū found his grandfather killed. The Soul Reapers who reported said a Hollow had killed him, but Uryū recognized blade wounds and knew that his grandfather had in-fact been struck down. As of that moment, Uryū decided to disregard his promise not to use his powers, believing Soul Reapers to be both corrupt and liars. During his time coming into his powers as a newly created Soul Reaper, Ichigo Kurosaki would meet Uryū and come to blows with him several times, with Uryū claiming to be a rival and enemy who intended to kill Hollows before Ichigo could. Inquiring about him, Ichigo would eventually find out about Uryū's story. Ichigo's guide, Rukia Kuchiki, would tell Ichigo that while it is possible the Soul Reapers involved had their own agenda, such actions would not be officially sanctioned and the Head Captain would never break such an accord. Ichigo and Rukia's sympathy with Uryū along with their teaming up to stop a Hollow invasion would eventually earn a shaky alliance with Uryūl.

Soul Society Arc[]

Eventually Rukia would be brought in to the Soul Society on charges of treason. Rukia agreed to go quietly so that Ichigo would not be killed as an accomplice and went to face punishment for allowing a normal human to acquire her powers as a Soul Reaper. When Rukia got back, she was locked up and sentenced to summary execution without a formal hearing. Though Rukia felt guilty for having let her superiors down nearly everyone else in the Soul Society took issue with the decision. However, due to a stringent honor system that prevented them from acting against the council at Central 46, the execution was still set to take place.

When word got back to Ichigo by Kisuke Urahara, an exiled but still very well informed Soul Reaper, of what Rukia was facing, he insisted on going straight into the heart of the Soul Society to get her back before she was destroyed. Ichigo's friends Orihime Inoue and Yasutora "Chad" Sado were eager to help save Rukia as well and did not want Ichigo to go alone. Uryū also wished to join, partially because he did not trust Soul Reapers to tend to their own affairs, partially because he believed he would openly expose Soul Society corruption but also because, despite his pretenses, he considered Rukia and Ichigo his friends. Once the arrived in the Soul Society, Ichigo and his friends ending up confronting all the Soul Reapers willing to follow official orders who considered the intruders to be accomplishes to Rukia, and thus enemies of the Soul Society.

Uryū's main fight during the Soul Society arc was with Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi, the head of the Squad 12, the Gotei 13's research division. Mayuri was kept on hand for his brilliance but was considered amoral, petty and sadistic, viewing his research as the be all end all. During the fight with Mayuri, Uryū pronounced his hatred for Soul Reapers and the root of his distrust, to which Mayuri casually admitted to being the one who put out a kill order on Uryu's grandfather, bribed the agents sent to kill him and brought his soul in for experimentation. Apparently, Mayuri had been too intrigued by the exact nature of the Quincy's unique spiritual energy and wished to research the last known one in existence before he passed on naturally and was given a proper afterlife, lost in the system. Once captured, Mayuri tormented Uryū's grandfather through several painful experiments until he could no longer take it and passed on. Mayuri Kurotsuchi's sole regret from the whole ordeal was that he had barely learned anything before Mr. Ishida's soul collapsed in on itself. Hearing of the depravity Captain Kurotsuchi had resorted too, Uryū became enraged and revealed his full powers to Mayuri. Mayuri Kurotsuchi was not scared, but in-fact overjoyed to see another Quincy alive and well delivered right into his hands to be a replacement guinea-pig. Though the battle was intense Uryū eventually defeated Mayuri, though Mayuri was able to reform form through a single cell, and became airborne and floated away to heal and reconstitute himself. Following the battle Uryū would temporarily lose his Quincy abilities.

Arrancar Arc[]

After Ryuken restores Uryū's Quincy abilities, he allies with Ichigo, Chad, Rukia, and Renji Abarai to rescue Orihime from Sōsuke Aizen's Arrancar army in Hueco Mundo. While in Hueco Mundo, Uryū and the Hollow Pesche Guatiche work together to fight off Cirucci Sanderwicci. Later they and Renji Abarai work together to face off against Szayelaporro Granz but before being rescued by Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Uryū would then regroup with Orihime and Ichigo while they were fighting against Ulquiorra Cifer.

Timeskip[]

By 2003 Uryū continued to kill Hollows following Ichigo loss of his Soul Reaper powers, eventually helping him fight off Kūgo Ginjō. During The Thousand-Year Blood War arc, Uryū would discover Soken's journal after an argument with Ryuken, where he learned the full extent of the Quincy's history with the Soul Reapers, learning the Quincy ancestor Yhwach and his empire went to war with the Soul Society 1000 years prior, while the surviving Quincy were massacred centuries later due to their refusal to stop killing Hollows, Uryū would also discover his mothers death nine years prior was the result of Yhwach stealing lesser Quincy's powers greatly weakening and killing most picked off.

After being confronted by Jugram Haschwalth shortly after learning the truth, Uryū is taken before Yhwach. To get close enough to assassinate him, Uryū pretends to swear loyalty and joins his cause. Soon after, he is named Yhwach’s successor and appointed heir to the Wandenreich, tasked with killing the Soul King and destroying Soul Society. Haschwalth later explains that all Quincy are intrinsically connected to Yhwach, detailing his unique ability to carve an initial directly into a person’s soul. When Uryū questions how this is possible, Haschwalth reveals that Yhwach had already engraved an initial into Uryū’s soul when he forced him to drink a cup of his blood. Shocked, Uryū is pinned to the wall as Haschwalth declares there is no escape for him—stating that even if Uryū joined solely to avenge his mother, he was trapped from the very beginning. Haschwalth further explains Yhwach’s fixation on battle and death, emphasizing that all Sternritter exist solely to live and die for their emperor. As Ichigo approaches the tower, Uryū steps forward and fires a Heilig Pfeil, which Ichigo deflects before realizing who attacked him. Reacting in disbelief, Ichigo is told by Uryū to go home, as he stands no chance against Yhwach. When Ichigo demands answers, Uryū unleashes Licht Regen, but the assault is blocked by Orihime’s Santen Kesshun as she and Sado emerge from a Garganta. Yhwach informs Uryū that this farewell will be permanent, to which Uryū calmly responds that he already knows. He then ascends into the air alongside Yhwach and Haschwalth before vanishing in a flash of light.

During the journey to the Royal Palace, Uryū and the Schutzstaffel clash with the Soul King’s Royal Guard. Uryū confronts Senjumaru Shutara and is trapped in her Bankai, but activates his Schrift, Antithesis, reversing their conditions. This kills Senjumaru and frees his allies as Yhwach proceeds toward the Soul King. Later, Uryū publicly declares Yhwach as “His Majesty” and destroys the Kamikake, the final mechanism holding the Soul King together and maintaining balance between worlds. He fires multiple Quincy arrows at Yoruichi Shihōin and Ichigo, severely injuring Yoruichi. To further prove his loyalty, Uryū battles Ichigo using his Vollständig and blasts a near-fatal hole through his chest, sending Ichigo and his allies plummeting from the palace. Lille Barro briefly considers finishing them off but refrains after witnessing Uryū’s decisive actions and bluntly stating they will die from the fall—an act praised by Gerard Valkyrie despite Uryū being a newcomer. Uryū then kneels as Yhwach creates the Wahrwelt.

When the Shinigami later invade Wahrwelt, Uryū encounters and battles his former ally Renji Abarai, mortally wounding him in front of Lille Barro, though he leaves Renji alive enough to be saved. While reflecting on his father dissecting his mother’s corpse, Haschwalth confronts Uryū and questions his betrayal using The Almighty. Uryū denies it, prompting Haschwalth to attack in order to uncover the truth. When Uryū pleads for him to stop, Haschwalth slashes him and throws him from the palace, unintentionally reuniting him with Ichigo. When Chad and Orihime arrive, Haschwalth continues testing Uryū’s loyalty. Uryū fires another Heilig Pfeil at Ichigo, which is narrowly dodged using Zangetsu. Refusing to explain himself, Uryū uses Seele Schneider to send Ichigo, Chad, and Orihime falling into Wahrwelt, though Orihime manages to save them with Santen Kesshun. Uryū then halts his attack. Ichigo questions why he still aligns with the Wandenreich despite their goal of destroying the world. Growing weary, Uryū gives Ichigo a Sun Key, ordering him to return to the Human World while he remains behind to destroy Wahrwelt alone. He reveals that only he can dismantle it using Leidenhalt and finally admits his true goal: killing Yhwach. Haschwalth soon reveals himself, taunting Uryū and stating that he foresaw the betrayal using The Almighty, even destroying one path to the Human World in advance. Declaring that he will eliminate them before Yhwach awakens, Haschwalth inadvertently reveals that as long as he possesses The Almighty, Yhwach himself is no longer omniscient. Realizing this, Uryū orders Ichigo and the others to rush to Yhwach’s chamber. Despite Ichigo’s objections, Uryū assures him he will survive and urges him to focus on his mission. When Uryū questions why Haschwalth is not pursuing them, Haschwalth claims they are destined to die. Uryū counters that fate can be changed, and the two clash. At sunrise, Haschwalth senses his powers returning to Yhwach. Though Uryū, battered and bleeding, mocks him for failing to finish him before dawn, Haschwalth coldly states that Uryū is already defeated.

Haschwalth incapacitates Uryū and explains how his life is governed by scales, though he cannot discern what they have shaped Uryū into. Uryū rises and forms a new Heilig Bogen, declaring he will not know the answer until the Wandenreich falls. He challenges Haschwalth for questioning his character instead of killing him. When Haschwalth reveals he has seen a future where all of Uryū’s allies die, Uryū responds that such futures can be altered—forcing Haschwalth to admit this before hinting at a far more terrifying power of The Almighty when wielded by Yhwach.

Haschwalth then reveals his Schrift, The Balance, which redistributes misfortune from the fortunate to the unfortunate and redirects harm intended for him into his Freund Schild. Declaring Uryū’s defeat inevitable, he is caught off guard when Uryū activates Antithesis, reversing their conditions and transferring his wounds onto Haschwalth while healing himself. Uryū demands to know the true power of The Almighty, but Haschwalth only insists he was right to try killing him early. As Uryū attempts to retreat, Haschwalth uses The Balance again, grievously injuring him and declaring even Antithesis cannot overcome it. He prepares to finish Uryū, dismissing him as a mere human clinging to fragile beliefs.

Uryū is saved when Auswählen activates, stripping Haschwalth of his power. As Uryū escapes, Haschwalth—without regret for serving Yhwach for a thousand years—asks him to transfer his wounds and finish him. Before dying, he urges Uryū to save his friends. Ascending once more to the Soul King Palace, Uryū encounters Ryūken alongside Ichigo’s father, who gives him an arrowhead forged from the silver that forms in a Quincy’s heart after Auswählen. Ryūken explains that only Uryū can fire it. Reaching the Seireitei, Uryū shoots Yhwach from behind, briefly nullifying his powers. He urges Ichigo to strike, allowing Ichigo to bisect Yhwach at last—avenging both of their mothers. Ten years later, Uryū became a doctor and watched Chad's boxing match on his phone via livestream.

Skills and Abilities[]

In addition to being physically well trained and nimble, Uryū's training as a Quincy encouraged marksmanship and adaptive combat styles. The Quincy signature weapon is a bow and arrow composed entirely of Reishi (essentially ectoplasm meets holy energy). He also has two blades he carries composed of Reishi as well. Uryū knows several rituals commonly seen as holy to the Quincy and uses them to collapse others' spiritual power in on themselves. Though he seems to ignore the subject, the truth is all of Uryū's attacks do not simply send souls to the afterlife when killed, but actually wipes them out on a spiritual level, destroying them and preventing both reincarnation or even proper afterlives. This is particularly gruesome when considered that more than a few Hollows are innocent souls twisted and enslaved by other Hollows.

Trivia[]

  • When empowered by Yhwach's blood, Uryu gained the power to switch his condition/fortune with someone else, saving himself from any injuries or death.
  • Uryū was born on November 6, 1985, making him a Scorpius on the year of the Ox.
