Usapyon is a major protagonist of the 2013 video game series YoKai Watch and is one of the mascots of the franchise. He is one of the main characters of the games and anime and is the overall main protagonist of the Moon Rabbit Crew DLC to YoKai Watch Blasters: Red Cat Corp/White Dog Squad.
He is voiced by Melissa Hutchison in the video games and Katie Leigh in the English dub of the anime.
Appearance[]
Usapyon is an Otter Yokai who's slightly taller than Jibanyan. He has light blue fur and dark blue eyes. His main attire consists of a yellow space suit with rabbit ears on the helmet and a blue jetpack on his back. Without the suit it is revealed that he has short ears, lacks a shirt but wears a scarf with black shorts that spell "USA". He also has a wispy, purple tail.
When angered, Usapyon goes into Invader Mode by pressing the grey buttons on the bottom sides of his helmet. A glass plate will flip over his head and black smoke fills his helmet with two red eyes appearing afterwards.
After Usapyon completely blows his stack, he activates his Emperor Mode by pressing the buttons on the top of his helmet in front of his ears. His suit turns from yellow to a pinkish-red color. The gray parts of his suit become a lighter color, sans for his gloves and boots which become pitch black. The eyes in his helmet are notable thicker and have a spike on top for an eyelash. He gains a dark green cape and his tail becomes a dark red.
Personality[]
Unlike Nate's partner Whisper, Usapyon is shown to be very smart, as almost never relies on the Yo-Kai pad for info. Whenever he does do so, he is open about, proving that doesn't care what others think of him if he doesn't know everything.
While he is smart, he is easily irritated by Hailey's antics. This will often result in him activating his Invader Mode; He then goes around shooting red bullets at his target, showing that he is incredibly violent when angry. Usapyon can be arrogant and brash, as he is condescending towards others when they are wrong. Hypocritically, he hates it when he is wrong himself and will not admit it until proven otherwise.
Despite this, Usapyon cares for his friends and seems to consider them as his family since he never actually had one. He shows signs of mono-phobia when left alone and is afraid of his friends leaving him. An example of this is if Hailey-Anne opens the red box and transforms into a dog, Usapyon is seen searching for her near the park and begins crying, saying he does not want to be alone again.
Like most of the other characters in the series, Usapyon can be a coward when it comes to combat, although it seems that he takes it to a lesser extent. He usually relies on his ray gun for damage, which is why he prefers to keep a distance when fighting. When he is enraged he becomes very brave, as he overcomes these boundaries and will fight up close.
Background[]
Before his death, Usapyon lived as an otter named Danny in a rabbit pin. Children would come by and adopt the rabbits and completely ignore him since he was not a rabbit himself. This caused him to grow depressed until someone named Doctor Hughely adopted him on Christmas.
One day, Hughely and his team constructed a rocket, hoping to launch Danny into space. However as the rocket began to launch, Danny panicked, jumped out of the cage and tampered with the buttons on accident. As a result, the rocket crashed and exploded. Danny died as a result and become the Yo-Kai, Usapyon.
After being blamed for losing millions of dollars on the rocket, Hughely was kicked off his field team and left for Springdale. Usapyon tried to follow him, but he lost track. He then set off to find a boy with many Yo-Kai friends with the hope that he will then reunite with the Doctor in order to apologize what happened.
While he originally wanted to find Nate, he settled for a girl named Hailey Anne Thomas and gave her the Yo-Kai watch. While hesitant to get involved at first, she agrees to help after Usapyon gives her a limited edition figurine from her favorite anime. The two formed a rocky partnership and gathered other Yo-Kai to launch an Itty-Bitty Rocket ship into orbit as the Doctor watched. Hailey tries to reunite Usapyon and Hughely with her watch, but it seems like it doesn't work. Unbeknownst to Usapyon, Hughely reveals that he could see him from the start, but he wants Usapyon to follow his own path, which is why he pretended that he could not see him.
Trivia[]
- In episode 91 of the Yo-Kai Watch anime, it is revealed that he inhales to exit his Invader Mode and exhales afterwards.
- It is also revealed that the amount of time he is in Invader Mode depends on how angry he is at the moment.
- His bullets are made of electricity, as shown when he shoots a chair Hailey is sitting on and her skeleton is seen after she gets shocked.
- He appeared in the Final Fantasy XIV Collab.
- His Soultimate move is mostly referred to as Bunny Beam. However, it sometimes has other names in different media. In Yo-Kai Watch Wibble Wobble, it is called "Super Sizzler".
- In Japan, his name given to him when he was alive was Chibi, which means short.
- During the game's climax, Usapyon and Hughely are able to reunite when the former needs his help. However, it is unknown if they meet again during the anime.
- Usapyon's shadowside form was not revealed in Yo-Kai Watch Shadowside, but rather in the new Yo-Kai Watch anime.
