Drgerald

No, the similarities to a certain other Gerald are not a coincidence.

Oh, look at me...Haven't done a proposal in ages, and now I'm grasping for low-hanging fruits. Oh well, let's see how lucky we are with this one.

What's the work?

Sonic the Comic Online! is an “unofficially official” continuation of Sonic the Comic…Basically, it’s a fan work with a high enough level of Approval of God to be allowed on this wiki…for now, at least. Like the original comic, it’s about Sonic and Freedom Fighters defending Mobius against Dr. Robotnik and other threats, but there’s also a long-arse arc about Sonic becoming a fugitive due to a combination of slander and a frame-up which takes up most of the comic, which many fans weren’t happy with, and it’s currently on a hiatus, as if the issues didn’t take long enough to be published in the first place…But whatever, that’s not what you came for, did you?

This is, by the way, the only issue our candidate appears in.

Who is Dr. Gerald? What has he done?

After having spent such a long time as a fugitive, Sonic was eventually forcibly turned into his demonic form, Super Sonic, and brought Mobius to ruin. In 70 years, only a handful of survivors remained, Dr. Gerald among them. Of course, they wouldn't last for much longer, so they sought a more permanent solution to the "Iblis" problem. And Gerald and his scientist colleagues did come up with a solution. They created a time machine, which Silver would use to travel back to the time when Super Sonic was weak and defeat him (unaware that back then, Super Sonic was locked inside the regular Sonic). Before sending Silver back in time, Gerald uploaded all needed intel into his A.G. device, and in time at that, as Super Sonic located the G.U.N. base and destroyed it. Dr. Gerald presumably perished, but Silver was sent back in time and, as we saw in later issues, while he didn't stop Super Sonic from emerging, he still played a crucial role in defeating him before his reign of terror could even start.

Admirable standards

Sonic the Comic continuity is no stranger to global and cosmic protection: Sonic saved all life on Mobius, Earth and even the entire universe many times, Knuckles stopped Zachary from dropping the Floating Island on Mobius and destroying all life on it, Amy saved the universe by stopping the Time Waster from destroying time, Shortfuse saved Mobius by foiling Robotnik's plan to suck out its life essense, Ebony stopped Blaze the Cat's flames from causing worldwide damage, and as for Silver you've heard already. I still think Gerald passes, despite his rather short pagetime, in particular due to how crucial his actions were to undo the bad future where Mobius was a fiery wasteland and Super Sonic hunted survivors down -- you know, not all of them at once, he wants to "play with the food". He does mention that he developed the time machine jointly with other scientists, but he is the only one of them we get to see. Even if Silver and Tails did all the heavy lifting, without Gerald's time machine the former wouldn't even be there to fight Super, while the latter could really use Silver's warning of things to come. As for not saving more than one world, let's be fair, Gerald didn't really have the means to do more, everyone who did that had resources that he lacks.

Corrupting qualities?

None, really. He is just a guy with a good head on his shoulders who uses his brains to help save the world, and he doesn't do anything questionable. Even though he acknowledges the risks the time machine's use of Chaos Emeralds as a power source may bring, he only does it because that's the survivors' only chance at victory at this point; last resort, you know. Even if brining the Emeralds to base lured Super Sonic in and led to him presumably killing everyone, we don't know if Gerald had any idea this could happen.

Verdict?

Yes.
