Hello. Today will be my next offer for the status of an PG, and it is dedicated to Billy Candle. After some thought, I decided to give him a chance.

What's the Work?

Call of Juarez is a series of Western-style first-person shooter games. It is one of the most successful series of games in this genre (after Red Dead Redemption of course). Today, we will discuss the first part, in which Billy appears.

Who is Billy Candle? What did he do?

Billy Candle is one of the main characters of the game Call of Juarez. He is the biological son of Marisa and Juan Mendoza, and the stepson of Thomas McCall.

Billy didn't know who his father was, and he didn't even have a last name. Because of his Mexican ancestry, he suffered from racism from the local population. His stepfather Thomas hated him and beat him every day, along with his mother. Once Thomas even called Billy's childhood friend a "bad word," which made Billy angry and run away, and Thomas chased him and even nearly killed him with a pitchfork, but the guy ran away, left his house and went after Juarez's gold, but after two years of searching, he found nothing.

Billy returned to his hometown, but upon arriving home, he found his mother and stepfather dead, lying under the inscription "Call of Juarez" written in blood. A man named Ray McCall, a former criminal who now lives the life of a fanatically religious priest, Thomas' brother, saw Billy at the crime scene and considered him a murderer. Billy ran away from Ray, who later decided that his duty to God was to track down and kill the criminal. Meanwhile, Billy, running away from Ray, came across a bandit camp. After he sneaked through it, Ray met the guy. Billy escaped by jumping on a passing train. Ray cut out the camp and went to get the train. At that time, the train was attacked by bandits. Ray saved the train from them and found out where Billy had run off to.

Billy decides to go to the ranch of Molly's father, his beloved, where he is extremely reluctant to engage in hand-to-hand combat with her new lover, whom he defeats. Ray caught up with Billy at the ranch, and chased Billy across the field. Then he shot the guy, and he fell into the river. Billy survived, he was saved by an Indian named "Calm Water", who helps him find courage and accept himself. Soon, returning from the Indian's errand, Billy finds him dead, which saddens Billy. The bandits who killed him captured Billy. In Juarez, Billy meets a man named Juarez, who tells him that he is his biological father. He beats Billy up and forces him to search for the treasure under threat of Molly's murder. Ray arrives and saves Billy. The priest kills the bandits and gets to Juarez, who escapes and tells Ray that he will kill Molly if he does not bring the treasure. At this time, Billy first helps a poor boy with his father's funeral, and then finds gold.

Ray storms Fort Juarez and finds the cell where Molly is imprisoned. Juarez locks Ray and Molly out and sets the room on fire. Billy arrives, puts out the fire and attacks the villain. Suddenly Juarez shoots Ray and says that his armor saved him. Juarez and Billy fight hand-to-hand and the guy defeats the bandit again. Billy hugs Molly, and Juarez rises behind them with a knife. At this time, the dying Ray admits his guilt and asks the Lord for the only chance to save Billy and Molly. With the last of his strength, he shoots at the antagonist and dies happy. Later, Billy and Molly stand in Juarez Cemetery over Ray's grave. Billy, remembering the advice of Calm Water, decides not to run away from fate anymore. He also took the surname McCall, thereby showing the greatest respect for Ray.

Admirable standards

Although he is not as admirable as Ray McCall, Thomas McCall or Silas Greaves, he has far fewer resources than they do. Billy, unlike them, does not have any combat skills or great physical strength, but nevertheless, considering that he defeated Juarez, one of the most evil and dangerous villains, he still meets admirable standards.

Corrupting Factors

He has a few minor qualities that could be considered such, but I will try to explain why these qualities may not be so corrupting:

  • He was a very bitter and sarcastic guy towards the locals of the city, but it was justified because he suffered from their racist attitudes towards him. However, he still avoided violence and tried to never harm them, and he rarely got into fights unless necessary. This shows that despite everything, he still lacks cruelty. In addition, after meeting Calm Water, he begins to change and gives up his bitterness, as he begins to understand that he is not an empty place and that he does not need to run away from his destiny. From that moment on, he begins to help others and becomes very brave and heroic, and he also gets rid of his bitterness.
  • Although he is the biological son of the dangerous criminal Juan Mendoza, he does not look like his father at all, and unlike him is very fair and loving.
  • He hated his stepfather Thomas, but it was justified, as he beat him and his mother Marisa severely every day, and even once tried to kill Billy with a pitchfork. Despite this, Billy still did not wish for his death, and was shocked when Thomas was killed.
  • In some cases, he kills his enemies, and sometimes he beats them up, but this is only done when necessary, and even then, there have been no instances of excessive lethality. I can remember a time when Billy was very angry with Juarez, and even threatened to kill him, but this was more than justified, as Juarez had killed his mother and had even subjected her to rape by his gang, which greatly angered Billy. However, Billy restrained himself and did not kill Juarez after defeating him in hand-to-hand combat, but Ray eventually did so when Juarez stood up and almost killed Billy and Molly.
  • And most importantly, what makes him Near Pure Good now is his penchant for stealing, as he has stolen things on several occasions. However, upon reevaluating these instances, I can say that they were done out of necessity, and even then, Billy never harmed anyone. I remember how at the beginning of the game he stole a gun from a farmer, but that was only because Billy needed something to protect himself, as I mentioned, the townspeople hated him and treated him with racism. He also needed a weapon to protect himself from Thomas, who had already tried to kill him once. And then he gave the gun back to the sheriff when he asked for it. I can also remember the time when he stole a horse from a farmer, but that was also justified, as Billy was being chased by Ray, who wanted to kill him at the time, and Billy needed to escape. Additionally, Billy initially approached the farmer in a kind manner and simply asked for a drink of water, but the farmer dismissed him, threatening to kill him if he returned.

Verdict

Based on all of the above, I can conclude that he eventually got rid of all of his corrupting qualities, and he also showed great kindness and bravery, so I will say a weak yes.
