Demon Slayer anime season 3 Muichiro27s memory of Kagaya27s visit

Kagaya being not just a leader, but a father to his Corps.

Even at this very moment, the children of the Demon Slayer Corps are battling those demons, on the front line. No matter how many lives those demons take, the human heart will always prevail. No matter how much they are beaten down, people will always stand up and fight back.
~ And this is why Kagaya is one of the best leaders in history.

Hey, everyone! After a long time away from the whitelist, I'm finally back to propose heroes for pure good. Now firstly, I wanna apologize for my previous proposals that were shown to be plagrized. It was my never intention to commit such an thing and I will make sure not to do that again.

But at the same time, I'm happy that my original post was deleted. It was mainly because I felt there was something off about it. Like more lack of details that I added in the Pure Good wiki. And not explaining a bit further about his corrupting factors that much. So I thought to myself that I should probably do this proposal again and properly explain more about this character. And thanks to Jester of chaos (who also given me a second chance), I can now finally do exactly what I wanted to do.

So with all that said, ladies and gentlemen, allow me to re-introduce: Kagaya Ubuyashiki.

What's the work

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a dark fantasy action manga/anime series written and created by Koyoharu Gotouge. The manga started around 2016, concluding in the year of 2020. It eventually received an anime adaption by Ufotable in 2019, with Ufotable planning to do a movie trilogy for the series' finale.

The story resolves around a young boy by the name of Tanjiro Kamado, who lost his entire family to a demon, with his younger sister Nezuko being the only survivor, but she becomes a demon. Afterwards, the two would go on to join the Demon Slayer Corps to hunt down the demon responsible for their family's murder and causing Nezuko's demonic transformation, with demon revealed to be the Demon King known as Muzan Kibutsuji. Accompanying them on their journey is two fellow slayers: the cowardly but loyal Zenitsu Agatsuma and the hot-blooded and arrogant Inosuke Hashibira, while embarking on certain locations of Japan while accompanied by elite members of the corps known as the Hashira.

Who's Kagaya Ubuyashiki? What has he done?

Kagaya Ubuyashiki (Manga; Colored)

Kagaya Ubuyashiki is a major character of the manga/anime series. He is one of the two big goods (alongside Lady Tamayo in the series, being the 97th leader of the Demon Slayer corps.

Background

Kagaya was born as a male in the Ubuyashiki Clan, which was cursed by the Demon King Muzan Kibutsuji in which male members of the clan are cursed to suffer an fatal illness that would slowly afflicted the body until they eventually die. This curse was mostly because of the clan being blood related with Muzan. He was born as the youngest member in the family, with his elder brothers being Senri and Akito. At the age of four, Kagaya suffered an immense family tragedy when his father, who was a sensitive individual, committed suicide due to no longer being able to bear the thought of losing more demon slayers. His brother Senri, who resented being dressed like a female and cursed his family, eventually committed suicide, dragging in Akito to it. Their mother try to save the two, but she perished as well. Due to their deaths, Kagaya became the leader of the Demon Slayer corps.

Kagaya met Amane at the age of thirteen, who was assigned to be his wife and take care of his health. Although Kagaya agreed to this, he stated that the condition was that she be allowed to care for him on her own free will. A year later, Kagaya learned of a blind monk by the name of Gyomei Himejima was imprisoned for having murdered eight children under his care. Realizing that the monk was innocent and was trying to protect them from a demon, he quickly intervene and saved him from being executed. He then gave comfort to the gentle giant, ensuring him that he wasn't a murder. This led to Gyomei becoming the Stone Hashira of the Corps (as well as their strongest swordsman) and Kagaya's trusted confidant. Then in the following year, Kagaya would become the father of quintuplets; four daughters and one son. Their names were Hinaki, Nichika (the eldest daughters), Kiriya (the only son), Kunia, and Kanata (the youngest daughters).

Later on, the corps would welcome new Hashiras such as Tengen Uzui, who left his past behind alongside his three wives as he was unwilling to become as ruthless as his father and younger brother. Kagaya praised Tengon for his choice, noting that he must have faced great difficulty and endured it in order to leave his old life behind and step into a new one. Touched by his words, Tengen became heavily loyal to the master, becoming the Sound Hashira of the corps. Additionally, two new Hashiras will join the corps; the quiet and aloof Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka, and the gracious and kind Flower Hashira Kanae Kocho.

The corps would then welcome a new Hashira; the bloodthirsty and vengeful Sanemi Shinazugawa, after he managed to slay Lower One Kizuki Demon Ubume. The first time they meet, Sanemi angrily insults Kagaya for sending Demon Slayers under his command to death, with a unconcerning smile on his face, angering the Hashiras (particularly Gyomei), but Kagaya allows Sanemi to continue, with the latter accusing the leader of being weak to the corps. But to Sanemi's shock and surprise, Kagaya apologizes to him and gently explains that due to his condition, he cannot even swing a blade without risking his blood pressure and that he wanted to become strong, but because of his illness, he cannot. He once again apologizes to Sanemi for making a difficult task and states that if Sanemi believes the Demon Slayers are pawns to him, then he too is a pawn as well. In addition, he states that he's not above the corps; he is simply treated with love and respect by the Demon Slayers and tells Sanemi that he does not need to, and simply requests him to defend human lives. He also apologized again for summoning Sanemi right after the death of his best friend Masachika Kumeno, surprising Sanemi. Kanae explains to Sanemi that the master remembers the names of the Demon Slayers under his command, shocking Sanemi further. Kagaya then gives Sanemi a letter of will written by Kumeno to read, causing Sanemi to tear up. Ever since then, Sanemi became gravely loyal to Kagaya.

Sometime later, a tragedy occurred with the death of Kanae by the hands of Upper Two Kizuki Demon Doma, with her younger sister Shinobu becoming the Insect Hashira. Later on, Kagaya would call a Hashira meeting but instead of the Flame Hashira Shinjiro Rengoku arriving, it was instead his eldest son Kyojuro , who explained that his father has become depressed and alchoolic. Kyojuro then express his desire to take over his father's position as the Flame Hashira, causing Sanemi to attack to test his worth. Kagaya then proceeds to stop Sanemi by calling his name, causing the Wind Hashira to stop. Kagaya then presents Kyojuro the opportunity to prove his worth by assiging him a task to face off against a Twelve Kizuki demon, who was located in Shinjuro's former territory. After Kyojuro defeats Lower Two Kizuki Demon Hairo and returns victorious, Kagaya appoints him as the Flame Hashira.

Kagaya then meets Kyojuro's pupil, a young Demon Slayer named Mitsuri Kanroji, who was ostracized for her abnormal strength and unique and unsual traits, which led to her being insecure about herself. Kagaya took pity on the girl and told her that her strength was a gift from the gods themselves and anyone who has ever spoken ill of her were merely jealous of her strength and states she should be proud of that. Deeply touched by the master's words, she tearfully thanks him and bows before him, crying with relief. She then would become the Love Hashira.

And finally, there were the two last Hashiras to join the corps; the amnesiac but gravely talented Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito and the cynical but devoted Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro. Kagaya and Amane would often check on Muichiro due to his amnesiac condition, with Kagaya gently asking him to ease his rigid perception so he can find himself in the future.

Demon Slayer: Kimestu no Yaiba

Kagaya first appeared in the Final Selection Arc, where he is informed that a total of five survivors have managed to pass the Final Selection. Satisfied by the number of his "children", Kagaya begins to wonder what kind of Demon Slayers they would eventually become in the future. He later appeared in the Mt. Natagumo Arc, where he is informed by the situation at Mt. Natagumo. Believing that a member of the Twelve Kizuki is responsible and to rescue the survivors, he sends two of the Hashira, Giyu and Shinobu, to intervene. Thanks to him, the two Hashiras manage to quickly eliminate Lower Five Kizuki Demon Rui and his Spider Demon Family.

The Demon Trial

After the death of Rui and his Spider Family in Mt. Natagumo, a trial is held for a Demon Slayer named Tanjiro Kamado, who is harboring a demon named Nezuko, his younger sister. After a brief conflict in trial, Kagaya arrives and the Hashira immediately bows before him. Sanemi then asks questions to the master about the circrumstances regarding the Kamado siblings, and to their surprise, Kagaya had already accepted Tanjiro's situation and requests the Hashira to do the same as well. While Mitsuri and Muichiro (to some extnet) agrees to the masters' orders, the rest of the Hashira opposes this, while Giyu and Shinobu are silent on the matter. Reciving their answers and questions, Kagaya informs them that he recieved a letter from the former Water Hashira and Giyu's mentor Sakonji Urokodaki, informing that he believes Nezuko is capable of fully resisting the urge to attack humans and should it ever happen, he, alongside Tanjiro and Giyu, will committ seppuku.

Both Sanemi and Kyojuro disagree, claiming that Nezuko's claim of not attacking humans cannot be proven, while Kagaya argues that three people are putting their lives on the line and calls for a stronger argument. In addition, he reveals that Tanjiro met the Demon King Muzan in person and had sent demons to kill him, much to the surprise of the Hashira. Though they realize he is important, Sanemi still believes Nezuko would attack humans, he tries to prove this by stabbing her and taunting the demon with his blood, entering the headquaters so she can come out of the box. When Nezuko is able to resist the urge to attack, Kagaya is inform by his elder daughters of this. Seeing this as proof that Nezuko will not harm humans, a pleased Kagaya informs Tanjiro that there will be those who will not easily accept Nezuko, and asks them to prove their worth by killing a member of the Twelve Kizuki. Tanjiro, touched by the master's kind words, vows to kill Muzan, though Kagaya humoursly implores to start small with a Kizuki demon, much to Tanjiro's embaressment and the Hashira's amusement. Tanjiro and Nezuko are then taken by the Kakushi, but Kagaya is then interrupted by Tanjiro, who wishes to headbutt Sanemi again for hurting his sister, before he is taken down by Muichiro, who is quietly furious by Tanjiro interupting the master. Before Tanjiro leaves, Kagaya asks him to give his regards to Lady Tamayo, much to Tanjiro's surprise.

In the night, Kagaya and the Hashira cotinued on with their meeting, where he is informed by the growing threat of the demon race on humanity, and the declining skill in the newer Demon Slayers, much to the Hashira's anger. As Gyomei explained, because only people who knew about Demons become Demon Slayers, they cannot boster their numbers easily, while the other Hashira noted about Tanjiro's encounter with a Twelve Kizuki during his early career as a slayer, in which the master mentioned that because of the Lower Five's actions, Muzan was nowhere near. Though dissapointed by the rising threat of the demons, Kagaya still has faith in the Hashira, calling them the strongest warriors since the Feudal Era and looks foward to his children's successes. After the meeting concluded, Kagaya vows that the corps will defeat Muzan.

The Battle against the Twelve Kizuki

Kagaya then makes his appearance during the Mugen Train Arc, where he visits the ceremonial graveyard of the Demon Slayers who passed on, accompained by his wife, mentioning the names of each demon slayer. As Amane requests for Kagaya to rest, he ponders how long he will be able to continue the visits and believes those who have died in service to the corps deserve justice, which he will deliver. Moreover, he expressed to his wife that no matter how many people are killed or beaten down, the human will and heart will always prevail, and people will always stand back up and fight. He later learns of the Mugen Train Mission, where Kyojuro sadly perished in the mission by the hands of Upper Three Kizuki Demon Akaza, but managed to protect the 200 passengers from him and Lower Moon Kizuki One Enmu, alongside the Kamado siblings, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira. Kagaya praises the late Flame Hashira for his accomplishment and states he isn't sadden as he too will soon join him and the others in the next life.

In the Entertainment/Red-Light District Arc, Kagaya, whose health is worsening, learns of Tengen's mission in Yoshiwara where the Sound Hashira, alongside the Kamado siblings, Zenitsu, and Inosuke managed to defeat the Upper Six Kizuki Demons Gyutaro and Daki. An ecstatic Kagaya is overjoyed by this news and praises the Demon Slayers for their accomplishment in defeating the Upper Six Demons. Despite his severe coughing, Kagaya is too joyful since for over hundred years, an Upper Rank has never been defeated, and grabs his wife's hand as he realizes that an Upper Rank being killed is omen that the future is changing for the corps. He remarks that with this, Muzan's defeat will soon come. Kagaya begins to cough more violently, prompting a worried Amane to urge their children to grab his medicine for him.

Kagaya's Plan & Sacrifice

Months later, following the events of the Swordsmith Village Arc, after the Kamado Siblings, Muichiro, Mitsuri, and Genya Shinazugawa defeated Upper Rank Four & Five Hantengu and Gyokko respectively, defending the Swordsmith Village from their skirmish, and Nezuko becoming immune to the sun, it is revealed that Kagaya's health has began to slowly but seriously deteriorate across his entire body, leaving him unable to walk and due to his worsening health, is being tended by Amane, and having his face and body covered in bandages to slow down the curse's effect, but it is obviously clear he will not live long anytime soon. Due to this, Amane heads to the Hashira Meeting to inform them about the situation and the Demon Slayer Mark abiliy, which will allow them to greatly enhanced their physical prowess but at the cost of the user's life as they die at the age of 25, which led to Gyomei suggest to do a Hashira Training section to train the entire corps for the final battle. As he is tended by Amane, Kagaya thanks her for everything, driving his wife to tears as she replies it's been her pleasure. He also has a letter sent to Tanjiro to convince Giyu to partake in the Hashira Training, since due to his condition, he cannot do so himself.

Knowing full well that Muzan would come after Nezuko since she is immune to the sun, Kagaya begins hatching up a plan to weaken the Demon King and encourge the corps to defeat him and the remaining Twelve Kizuki Demons. He first recruited Lady Tamyo, alongside her assitants Yushiro and Chachamaru, to join forces with the corps, inviting her to the corps' headquaters and having her work with Shinobu to create an drug strong enough to weaken Muzan drastically. And due to his fatal health, Kagaya decides to use himself as bait to distract Muzan. He requests Gyomei to aid in his sacrifical plan, knowing full well that the others would object to his plan, with the monk sadly accepting this request. Kagaya thanks him and requests that no more of his children need to die. He also warns Gyomei that if decapitating Muzan doesn't work, then the corps must fight him until the sun arises since it's the only way to kill him.

Days later, Kagaya's vision of Muzan's arrival came true, as the Demon King manages to arrive at the Ubuyashiki Estate, having found the headquaters, thanks to the aid of the Upper Four Kizuki Demon Nakime. Kagaya welcomes Muzan, while the latter proceeds to insult him for his hideous appearance. During their talk between each other, Kagaya reveals that he and his clan are related to the Demon King and because of him, he was the root cause of the curse that has been plauging the clan for centuries, to which Muzan cruelly doesn't care and states nothing will stop him from getting Nezuko and becoming immortal. Kagaya, unfazed by the Demon King's threats, then proceeds to give him his viewpoint of eternity,

I... happen to know... what eternity is. Eternity is... the human will. The human will lasts for all eternity... and it's immortal. Over the last thousand years... the Demon Slayer Corps has never been eradicated. So many of my poor children has perished... And yet... it still exists. The fact that it remains.. proves that the human will... what you just brushed off as rubbish... is immortal. Refusing to forgive those... who ahve senselessly taken the lives of their... loved ones... That feeling... is eternal. No one... has forgiven you. Not once... in the last thousand years. And you know what, Muzan? Time and time again... you have stepped on the tiger'ss tail... and incurred the wrath of the dragon... Normally... they would remained asleep for all time... but you've awakened... that tiger and dragon. They've have their glare... fixed on you all this time... vowing to never let you escape.
~ Kagaya's view on eternity.

Kagaya then states that if Muzan kills him, it wouldn't make a difference for the corps, even claiming that he isn't important, while stating that if Muzan dies, the demon race will be eradicated, angering the Demon King, further proving Kagaya's point. Kagaya then states in his final moments that even though he's not important, his death will encourage the corps, especially the Hashira, to defeat Muzan and the Demons. Muzan grows tired of Kagaya's words and ask if he is finished. Kagaya calmly answers yes and even express mid surprise that Muzan would listen for so long. He thanks his mortal arch-enemy, and unleashes his trap, exploding the entire estate, killing himself, his wife, and his two elder daughters, while gravely weakening Muzan. As Muzan tries to regenerate, Tamayo proceeds to drug Muzan with the Anti-Kibutsuji drug, and Gyomei tries to decaptite him, but Muzan survives and regenerates his head, proving Kagaya's theory correct.

The other Hashira, alongside Tanjiro, then arrives at the estate, which led to Kagaya's plan being a grave success, as the corps have become more motivated and determined to defeat Muzan and the Demon race once and for all.

Corrupting Factors

OK, this was the one part I'v felt like I fail at. The corrupting factors. While I did pretty much explained about his factors, I believe there were some people who still doubted about his PG status for obvious reasons. Which is why I wanted to take a liberty to restart and list down each of his factors and explain why his corrupting factors aren't exactly corrupting. But yeah, as I said before, to say Kagaya has corrupting factors when the guy is literally presented as one of the most noble and kindest man alive is just honestly laughable.

His behavior towards the Demon Slayer Corps

I'm sorry. I tried swinging a sword, but it made my heart pound and I couldn't even do it ten times. I would have been like you if I could have. I wanted to be a strong swordsman and protect others' lives with my own body. But... it was impossible for me. I'm sorry to have to ask you to do such difficult tasks [...] If you are pawns... then I am a sacrificial piece too. And if a single piece, even one such as myself, who moves the Demon Slayer Corps, were to die, nothing would change. This is your first time at a gathering of the Hashira, so I think you misunderstand. I do not place myself higher than you or anything like that. But everyone just treats me that way. If that bothers you, you don't have to go along with it. Instead of worrying about that, defend the lives of others as a Hashira. That is my only request.
~ If someone like Kagaya apologizes to an angry subordinate, takes responsibility, and even calls himself a pawn, I find it really hard to believe him to be a manipulator

.

To said he doesn't exactly care about the lives of the demon slayers is just not really true. The man literally memorizes EVERY SLAYERS' faces, names, and backgrounds. And I mean, everyone. Have you ever seen a leader go that far to remember every men and women who died in service? He shows himself to be a noble leader who cares for the well-being of others and makes sure to ensure to remember those who die during the battle against the demon kind. And not to mention that the guy doesn't even place himself higher than anyone else, and goes as far to views himself as a sacrificial pawn too, and even stated that he isn't really important. Does that really sound like the words of a manipulator?

Now there is regarding the Final Selection, a place that is infested with demons who can kill potential demon slayers. However, this isn't exactly corrupting because of three reasons. Firstly, they trap the demons inside the mountains with wisteria, preventing them from escaping. Secondly, their demons are extremely weak, and they are only capable of killing 2-3 people at a time. This makes them a bit more easier to kill. Finally, the candidates are fully aware of the risk they are taking. Since they are becoming demon slayers, they understand that they must fight in order to survive. Not to mention they are given time to train before they even join the Final Selection. Not only that, but Kagaya allows the candidates to make their choice whether or not they want to become Demon Slayers and he doesn't force them to join. It's their decison and theirs alone.

And yeah, I can get that he doesn't really show much reaction to whenever a member of the corps die, which would be concerning, but as metnioned above, Kagaya not only cares about the lives of his swordsmen, but he also memorizes their names, faces, and backgrounds as well. And when you think about it, his unphased reaction is mostly because of three reasons; the first being the fact he will die soon due to his curse. The second is to stay calm and collected as a leader, as he wishes to remain strong for his corps. And the third and final reason is his family's tragedy, as it affected him significantly, since his father committed suicide in response to losing the corps' swordsmen and his brothers committed suicide as well (with his mother dying while trying to save Kagaya's brothers), so it should come as no surprise that Kagaya is affected by the tragedy in such a way that he cannot be vulnerable when leading the corps.

His Extreme Sacrifice

Now we get to the second biggest issue. His sacrifice. Besides sacrificing himself, his wife Amane and his two eldest twin daughters Hinaki and Nichika Ubuyashiki were also part of the sacrifice. Now some users would believe this would be way too corrupting for Kagaya since they believed that while his wife being in the sacrifice was not a issue, he dragged his own children into his sacrifical plan. But's here the problem. He didn't.

Those two weren't dragged into his sacrifice. They choose to die with him because of their undying love for their father, refusing to let him alone. Moreover, it is impossible to say that they did not have a choice because they were children, because keep in mind that Kagaya was far wiser and more mature than any senior when he was a young child. In the same manner, the rest of his children are mature enough to make their own decisions and capable of contributing to the cause of the slayer corps as well. I mean, look at Kiriya, the kid was eight years old and yet he managed to lead the corps (although with a bit of stress) and pulled it off greatly. So yeah, doesn't really make sense to say they didn't have a choice when they are mature enough to make those kind of decisons.

Other Possible Factors

Now we get to the minor factors of his. Firstly, his strictness with his family. Which I said again, is the dumbest thing I have heard of. Yes, Kagaya can be strict with his family, but he isn't being strict out of malicious intent. He has good intentions since they're literally in a war with Muzan and the demons, so he's simply trying to prepare them in case something happens to him. And even with his strictness, Kagaya clearly loves his family. And please don't forget we literally have PG heroes who are strict parents, but are still otherwise loving and caring towards them. Kagaya is no different from them.

Secondly, his marriage to Amane, since it was revealed that Kagaya was 13 years old before he married Amane (who was 18 years old). However this can't as corrupting for two reasons. Firstly, it is stated that the Ubuyashiki males never managed to get to the age of thirty due to the curse. And considering the state he was in his twenties, it would make sense why they are married at a young age. And even then, Kagaya and Amane have genuine love between each other, as Kagaya only agree to marry Amane as long as she can care for him with her own free will.

And finally, there is his hatred towards Muzan Kibutsuji. Given his sacrificial act, his hatred for the man may appear extreme, however this is not really the result of corruption but rather of a justified feeling, similar to that of Tanjiro, as Muzan is a cruel and monstrous being who has trampled over innocent lives for thousands of years without any sign of regret or remorse. Furthermore, he cursed the Ubuyashiki Clan, which does not bother him in the slightest. As a result, Kagaya's hatred of Muzan is entirely justified. Even then, Kagaya maintained his composure around Muzan, despite his hatred for him, and tried to get Muzan to feel some ounce of remorse for his actions, but only relented when he sees the Demon King is callous on the acts he's done.

So with all that said, no. I can hardly find anything corrupting about this guy. He's a kind and noble man, whose only concern is to end the demon race to save both his family and the corps. Yes, he has committed some questionable acts, but those of decisons were necessary to defeat Muzan once and for all.

Admirable Standards

As I mentioned before, the admirable standards are high as hell. This is a series where we witness human demon slayers fighting off evil and man-eating demons, and the slayers possess unique abilities to fight them off. Before we even go down with Kagaya's deeds, let's go over our current PG characters' deeds for the moment:

  • Our main characters themselves Tanjiro & Nezuko Kamado. They defitnely passes the admirable standards as they fought against many dangerous demons, even powerful ones like the Twelve Kizuki. For their uniqude deeds, Tanjiro stands out due to his empathy towards and expressing his sympathy towards them, especially when it came to Rui, Gyutaro, and Daki, while influencing corrupted characters (such as Zenitsu, Inosuke, Genya, etc) to be better people. For Nezuko, she stands out for protecting her brother countless times, reisting the urge to harm any humans, and even sacrificing her life as she pushed Tanjiro to save the swordsmiths from Hantengu, despite the risk she will burn away to ash from the sunlight.
  • The Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku. He saved many innocent lives and sley down the demons trying to harm them. After becoming the Flame Hashira following his father's retirement, he and his student Mitsuri protected Tokyo from the Lower Kizuki Two demon Hairo, and slew down the powerful demon. In the Mugen Train Arc, he slew down the murderous Slasher Demon, saving several lives as a result and during Lower Moon One Enmu's attack on the Mugen Train, Rengoku manages to defend five cars of the train from the demon. And lastly, he engages on a one-on-one duel with the Upper Three demon Akaza, and despite losing his life, he managed to accomplish his mission of protecting 200 human lives from the demons and has a big influence on Tanjiro, remembering his wisdom and using it to inspire himself.
  • The Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji: Before becoming a Hashira, she assisted her mentor Kyojuro in protecting Tokyo from Hairo. As a Hashira, she's been saving many lives from demons, such as in the case of the Swordsmith Village, where she protected the village from the Upper Five Demon Gyokko and his fish demon army. Then, she battled against Zohakuten, the Hatred demon made from the Upper Four demon Hantengu, holding him off while Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya find Hantengu and kill him. She also battled against Nakime (Hantengu's successor as Upper Four) alongside Iguro, and later on, aided the rest of the corps in battling Muzan Kibutsuji, even goes as far to rip out one of his arms while being critically injured.
  • The Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima: Before becoming a Hashira, he was a monk who looked after orphan children. When a demon came and killed many of the orphans, nearly killing the young Sayo, Gyomei stepped in and protected the girl by bashing the demon's head with his bare hands (and keep in mind, he had no breathing style. Just his brute strength) until the demon was burned away from the sun. During his time as a Hashira, he saved the Kocho sisters Kanae and Shinobu from the demon that killed their parents, which led to the two becoming members of the slayer corps (with Shinobu becoming a key player in defeating Muzan), and battled against the Upper One demon Kokushibo (the second strongest demon in the series) and of course Muzan Kibutsuji.
  • Genya Shinazugawa: Who stands out merely because of his low resources compared to the other characters. As a demon slayer, he helped Tanjiro and the others protect the Swordsmith Village, battling against Hantengu and his clones. Then during the Infinity Castle Battle, he aided Gyomei, Sanemi, and Muichiro in battling against Kokushibo, and even as he was about to lose his life, he still hold on enough to weaken the Upper One demon drastiaclly. And he stands out because he doesn't possess a breathing style, but can gain supernatural powers by devouring demon's flesh, although it risks him becoming a demon. Despite this, he still does so in order to support the corps.
  • And finally, Yoriichi Tsugikuni: Despite his short time in the series, Yoriichi stands out mainly because he is responisble for the biggest turnaround against the demon race. Which was creating the legendary Breathing Styles. As the creator of the Breathing Styles, he is responsible for the slayer corps' existence since without them, the slayer corps wouldn't stand a chance against the demons. Of course, his second biggest deed was none other than defeating Muzan Kibutsuji. In one single strike. Despite failing to kill the Demon King, the latter was so terrified that he became incredibly paranoid. Not only that, but he saved Lady Tamayo and allowed her to live, despite being a demon. Because of this, he would ultimately caused the inevitable defeat of Muzan Kibutsuji.

So where does Kagaya stand out the most? Well, firstly, he's the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, who has guided the Corps in battling against the demons. His leadership and wisdom helps the corps stay strong, and not to mention that his clever mind managed to hide their main HQ from Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki for a very long time (something Kokushibo praises him for). The man does everything he can in his power to help the Corps and ensure the defeat of Muzan and his kind. And keep in mind, he's been leading the corps ever since he was four years old. That alone should tell you just how admirable that is.

Kagaya being a father to the Hashira

Kagaya showing that he's not just a leader. He's also a father to his swordsmen.

But there were also personal times where Kagaya helped several people, thanks to his actions and wisdom. For example:

  • Gyomei Himejima, whom Kagaya saved when he was imprisoned after being mistaken as a murderer by a traumatized Sayo, who was the only survivor of Gyomei's Orphange. In addition, he reassured Gyomei that he was not a murderer, which in turn caused the gentle giant to shed tears of joy. This led to Gyomei becoming a member of the Hashira, as well as Kagaya's confidant.
  • Tengen Uzui, as Kagaya reflected Tengen and his wives on the difficult path they had chosen. That the shinobi had all rejected the ideologies instilled in them in order to be Demon Slayers, and Kagaya could only question how hard it must be for them. Yet in the face of all this, they persist and continue to protect innocent lives, to which Kagaya warmly thanks Tengen and calls him a "remarkable child." This led to Tengen being willing to always be ready to lay down his life for him.
  • Sanemi Shinazugawa, whom Sanemi in the beginning resented Kagaya, mainly because at how he could smile as the leader responsible for numerous deaths and had assumed that he was just letting Demon Slayers die while he was sitting in the safety of the Hashira to protect, saying that his life wasn't the top priority, insulting him in the process (in front of the other Hashira no less, who clearly did not take the insult well). In response, Kagya gently apologized and explained how his body is not able to perform combat. He even allows Sanemi to treat him however he desired, since he is only respected by others because of their good intentions, and reminded him of his only wish is for him to focus on his duty as a Hashira. In addition, he presented Sanemi with a letter from his late friend Masachika. This led to Sanemi developing a proper respect for him, as well as his undying loyalty to him.
  • Mitsuri Kanroji, whom he reassured that her abnormal strength and unique physical features were a gift from the gods, and those who spoke ill of her are jealous of her strength, which touched Mitsuri as she bowed and cried in relief as she was accepted by Kagaya and the Corps for who she is.
  • Muichiro Tokito, who Kagaya lectures on how he cannot stay rigid with his perception of the world before claiming that he can become stronger once he finds his true, unshakeable self. This play a role in Muichiro reclaiming more of his original personality which made him more stronger.
  • and lastly, Giyu Tomioka. Although it was Tanjiro who got Giyu to rejoin the Hashira Training, it was ultimately thanks to Kagaya requesting this of him, since due to his illness, he couldn't be able to comfort Giyu himself. If not for Kagaya, Giyu would not only refuse the Hashira Training, but he would leave his role as the Water Hashira.

Furthermore, he spared Tanjiro and Nezuko despite the fact that the latter is a demon. He even refused to treat Nezuko badly and ensured that the Hashiras did not harm her (particularly Sanemi and Iguro, who are strongly prejudiced towards demons), and treated her well just as he does to everyone else. Hell, he even praises her alongside the others in the Entertainment District Arc when he heard about the defeat of the Upper Six Kizuki Demons.

Kagaya's Sacrificial Speech

Kagaya really got the last laugh at the Demon King. He proceeds to brutally criticize him and his views, while ensuring he didn't get the pleasure of killing him.

But his biggest crowning achievement is during the final half of the series. Knowing Muzan would hunt down Nezuko in order to absorb her to conquer the sun, he not only informed the Hashira about the mysterious Demon Slayer Marks (which would assist them in battling the Upper Ranks and Muzan), but he also devised an elaborate plan to weaken Muzan to a point where the corps could eliminate him. As a result, he recruited Tamayo to their cause and entrusted her and Shinobu with the task of developing a humanizing drug and an anti-Kibutsuji concoction, both of which would play a key role in weakening the Demon King.

This is honestly his biggest goodness deed he has ever done. Without his strategy, Muzan would not only be weakened, but thanks to recruiting Tamayo and having her work with Shinobu, both of them are able to create a drug strong enough to weaken Muzan even further, allowing the corps to have a fighting chance against the Demon King. In addition, his sacrifice motivates the entire Corps, including the Hashira, to fight and eliminate Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki once and for all.

When it comes to resources, he greatly stands out from the rest of the major characters in the series (even Genya to a certain extent), as the majority of them are highly elite and powerful swordsmen who possess Breathing Styles and/or other supernatural abilities to battle against the demons. Kagaya, on the other hand, is the leader of the entire corps and is not really a fighter due to his ill health. His only notable qualities include his leadership skills, his enhanced intelligence, and his foresight, which enables him to predict the future correctly. And because of these qualities, he was able to lead the corps with ease, espeically with creating a risky yet effective strategy to defeat Muzan once and for all.

Final Verdict

A big yes to the wise and noble leader of the corps, who help brought an end to the demon race once and for all.
