Hello everyone, this is my second Pure Good Proposal. I think I'll play this one safe and propose the main protagonist of one of my favorite movies. Marge Gunderson from Fargo. Without further ado, let's begin.

What's the work?

Fargo is a 1996 black comedy crime drama, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. In the film, inept salesman Jerry Lundegaard hires two criminals to kidnap his wife so that his rich father in law would pay a ransom that he would use to pay off gambling debts (yes, it's as stupid as it sounds). Things obviously go south when the criminals, Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud, end up murdering three people after being caught by the police. This attracts the attention of police chief, Marge Gunderson who begins tracking down the criminals and slowly uncovers the plot.

Who is she/What has she done?

Marge Gunderson is the heavily pregnant chief of police, unlike most other cops in movies, Marge is a genuinely nice person and always does her job right. She's not tough on anyone, including criminals. She spends the entire movie investigating the triple murder and eventually figures out that Lundegaard arranged his wife's kidnapping and got multiple people killed in the process.

Marge is also a very competent police officer, figuring out exactly what happened at the crime scene after spending mere minutes examining it. Not to mention, she's outright disgusted by the body count the villains of the movie rack up over the course of the run. Marge is an optimist who wants to see the best in people, she can't understand how people could be so cruel.

At the end of the film, Marge tracks down Showalter and Grimsrud... only to find that Grimsrud has killed his accomplice and Lundegaard's wife before she could get to either of them. Running for it, Grimsrud is shot in the leg by Marge and taken into justice. The film as a whole ends on a bittersweet note, with Lundegaard getting arrested, his father in law dead, his son an orphan, but on the bright side Marge and her husband earn their happy ending.

Admirable Standards

Being a take on Film Noir, Fargo has a low Admirable Standard. Most other characters in the movie are either jerks, criminals, incompetent, or any combination of the three (in quite a few cases mind you). Marge is the only person in the movie who manages to be a decent human being and a total badass at the same time.

  • Investigating the triple murder and eventually uncovering Lundegaard's scheme.
  • Marge tries to look for the best in people, even when there isn't any good in someone.
  • Even after witnessing Grimsrud shoving Showalter's corpse into a wood chipper, she still chooses to take him in alive.
  • She's outright horrified by the fact that 6 people died over something as trivial as money.
  • While she didn't arrest Lundegaard herself, she still gathered the evidence that lead to his arrest.
  • While she was on active field duty while 7 months pregnant, she never does anything to compromise the safety of her unborn child.

Corrupting Factors

None, Marge is a good person.

Final Verdict

I'm surprised nobody proposed her sooner, because I think she qualifies.
