GVMTBFE - Mothra

This is my first pure good proposal, so I was hoping to make sure I do well with this. So, my proposal is the Kaiju, Mothra.

What’s the work?[]

Mothra first appeared in the 1961 eponymous film. The plot features her two twin fairies, known as the Shobijin, taken from Infant Island, which causes Mothra to come in conflict with mankind in order to retrieve them.

Later, Mothra is brought back for the 1964 film, Mothra vs. Godzilla, where she battles against Godzilla. Mothra goes on to appear throughout the Godzilla franchise maintaining her role as a heroic Kaiju, protecting humans and/or fighting alongside Earth’s Kaiju.

Mothra also appears in the Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy’s first film, in which she and her larva battle Desghidorah. Though she dies, the larva becomes her successor, Mothra Leo, who goes on to be the main Kaiju of the trilogy.

Who is she? What has she done?[]

Mothra is considered the Goddess of Infant Island, the place she inhabits. She has two fairies that accompany her, who both pray for her aid, summon her, and translate Mothra’s thoughts. These fairies are most often referred to as the Shobijin, or “Little Pretties,” but in Heisei series, they are called the Cosmos, and in the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, they are called the Elias.

Along with protecting her Shobijin and Infant Island, Mothra has fought various Kaiju to protect mankind and Earth; in some cases, these are anti-heroic Kaiju, such as Godzilla and Battra, and in other cases, villainous Kaiju, such as King Ghidorah. In 1992’s Godzilla vs Mothra, she also defended Earth when she flew into space to destroy a massive meteorite that is on a collision course with Earth.

Mothra has shown to protect life on Earth in the form of nature, notably in Rebirth of Mothra, where she fights against Desghidorah, who attempted to desolate Earth by destroying the forests and draining their life force. Protecting weaker life is another thing she does, notably in the 1966 film, Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. In this film, she rescues the inhabitants of Infant Island, who were kidnapped and enslaved by a terrorist organization known as the Red Bamboo.

Admirable Standard[]

A wise and empathetic being, Mothra is a benevolent Kaiju, more so than even certain heroic Kaiju, such as Godzilla (who varies in his disposition towards humans and Earth). Who is often shown defending those that are weaker, even if it costs her.

Mothra vs Godzilla demonstrates her self-sacrificing tendency very well. Even though Mothra is old and near death, and thus would not survive her encounter with the Big-G, she still goes to battle Godzilla to defend Japan. A similar theme is shown in Rebirth of Mothra, where she fights Desghidorah even in a weakened and aged state. Sacrificing often takes the form of her taking hits for another Kaiju. In Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack! (try saying that three times fast), she took a hit for a heroic Ghidorah as Godzilla attempted to fire an atomic breath at the former. After Godzilla later kills her, she gives her energy to Ghidorah, which allows him to reach his King Ghidorah form. In Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., after being severely injured during her fight with Godzilla, she uses the last of her strength to fly in the path of Godzilla’s atomic breath in order to save her larva.

Mothra will also focus on the greater good. In Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster, Mothra, in the form of a larva, goes to persuade Godzilla and Rodan to help fight Ghidorah, who threatens to destroy Earth and civilization, and is even considering a battle with Godzilla in a prior film. It is through this, Godzilla begins his trip to becoming a heroic figure in the Showa Era. Another case where Mothra has redeemed an antagonistic Kaiju is in the Heisei, with Godzilla vs Mothra. Mothra had traded blows with Battra, and had been seriously injured by the latter when they both fought in their Imago forms. However, after Godzilla seriously injured Battra, Mothra heals Battra, and convinces him to help stop Godzilla. One case that is interesting is in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. Along with rescuing the Infant Islanders from the Red Bamboo, she also recognizes the urgency of the issue, as the Red Bamboo’s base is going to self destruct. When Godzilla confronts her, she merely knocks him aside, focusing on rescuing the Infant Islanders from the soon to explode island.

Corrupting Factors[]

There are some corrupting factors even for Mothra. When rescuing the Shobijin, she did cause harm to humans. However, this is solely during her effort to rescue her fairies, as in the 1961 Mothra film, she returns to Infant Island peacefully when the Shobijin are returned. A similar case is in Godzilla vs Mothra, where the larva causes damage while retrieving the Cosmos, but becomes peaceful once they are returned.

In Destroy All Monsters, a larval Mothra had attacked human civilizations, but only because the Kilaak had her under mind control.

Some damage to areas is also caused by her clashes with another Kaiju.

Verdict[]

Along with being my first PG proposal, it is somewhat difficult to make the proposal, as there have been multiple films and incarnations to cover, so I hope I did well. Personally, I’d say I’d lean for a yes, but I await your opninions.
