For my first Pure Good Proposal I have decided to propose a character from one of my favorite Disney movies. Say hello to Esmeralda!
What's The Work?
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the 34th animated movie made by Disney. It features Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer of Notre Dame, escaping his sanctuary and his tyrant guardian, Frollo, to experience the outside world. He helps a Romani girl named Esmeralda, and finds himself having to save the Romani from being murdered by his former guardian, Frollo.
Who Is Esmeralda? What Has She Done?
Esmeralda is introduced dancing in the streets for coins. Two guards try to arrest her on baseless claims that she was stealing money, but they get stopped by Captain Phoebus which allows Esmeralda to escape. She is then seen dancing at the Feast of Fools, where she accidentally reveals that Quasimodo's deformity is not a mask. When Quasimodo is being tortured by the townspeople Frollo refuses to save him saying that "A lesson needs to be learned here". Esmeralda goes to save him and calls out Frollo not saving him and for not providing justice to people who need it. Frollo has the guards go after Esmeralda. After a quick chase scene Esmeralda escapes. Esmeralda follows Quasimodo into the cathedral where she meets Captain Phoebus again. She is initially aggressive towards him, up to the point of attacking him with a candlestick, but engages in conversation when he puts away his sword and introduces himself. When Frollo arrives and orders Phoebus to arrest her, Phoebus refuses, saying that Esmeralda has claimed sanctuary. Frollo is then ordered out of the church by the Archdeacon. Frollo warns her that she can only stay inside for so long and hints that he feels lust towards her, which she responds with repulsion. Frollo has his guards block every door which forces Esmeralda to rethink her plan to escape. The archdeacon warns her not to antagonize Frollo further and at his suggestion, she offers a heartfelt prayer to god to help her and her people.
Enchanted by her song, Quasimodo watches from afar. He then accidentally stumbles on candles which alerts Esmeralda of his presence. He goes to the bell tower and Esmeralda follows him, attempting to apologize for bringing him to the stage. She finds Quasimodo's workshop and is impressed at his talent. Quasimodo tours Esmeralda around the bell tower. Esmeralda wonders how such an evil man like Frollo could have saved such a wonderful boy. Quasimodo says that Frollo took him in even though he is a monster. Esmeralda cites Frollo's lie that gypsies are evil and says Frollo may be wrong about them both. Quasimodo offers to let her live with him in the bell tower where she can have a sanctuary, but she expresses her desire to escape the church as "Romanis don't do well in stone walls". Quasimodo carries her down the tower to the streets, where she escapes. Esmeralda asks him to come with her, but he knows he would not be welcome, and his place remains in the tower. Esmeralda promises they will meet again and gives him a map of the town which would lead him to the Court of Miracles, where all the Romani are hiding. Frollo finds out that Esmeralda is missing and incites a manhunt which throws the whole town in chaos.
She observes Frollo from a distance and sees Frollo burning down a home with a innocent family inside. Phoebus saves them in time but is arrested for defying Frollo's orders. Phoebus tries to escape and is shot by Frollo's soldiers. Esmeralda saves Phoebus's life and she brings him to Quasimodo whom she knows will help her. She tends to Phoebus wound's and kisses him which breaks Quasimodo's heart. She escapes the bell tower when she realizes Frollo is approaching and leaves Phoebus in Quasimodo's care. Frollo bluffs that he knows where the Court of Miracles is and that he will attack it in the morning with one thousand men. Quasimodo and Phoebus quickly reach the Court of Miracles using the map Esmerelda gave them to try and warn them, only for Frollo to suddenly appear, having used Quasimodo to lead him there. Esmerelda is captured and sentenced to burn at the stake for the crime of witchcraft. As Frollo holds the torch to set the pyre ablaze, he offers her one last chance to be with him or be burned. She spits in his face in utter disgust and he attempts to burn her alive.
She is saved in time by Quasimodo but she ends up nearly suffocated and falls unconscious due to smoke inhalation. Quasimodo cries over her seemingly dead body before fighting off Frollo. Esmeralda manages to awake, alive, and is rescued by Quasimodo from Frollo's attacks. They hide holding onto the balcony of the tall bell-tower but Frollo sees them and attacks them with his sword. Eventually, Esmeralda has knocked away and Frollo tries to get Quasimodo off his feet but is pulled down with Quasimodo. Esmeralda holds Quasi for dear life as Frollo climbs up on a gargoyle and prepares to hit them with his sword. However, the gargoyle starts to break off the cathedral causing Frollo to fall to his fiery death. Esmeralda accidentally releases her grip on Quasimodo, but Phoebus, who found a way into the cathedral after Quasimodo and the gargoyles pour molten lead that prevented Frollo's soldiers from breaking in, saves him.
Phoebus, realizing Quasimodo's feelings for Esmeralda, stands aside so Quasimodo can be with her. However, Quasimodo realizes their feelings for each other and interlocks their hands, accepting their love and the two kiss. As Phoebus and Esmeralda emerge safely from the church to cheers to triumph from the crowd, Esmeralda extends her hand to Quasimodo to join them outside. As Quasimodo joins her, he is finally accepted into the town population.
One thing I was worried about was Esmeralda was if she passed the admirable standard to Quasimodo but I feel she does. She saves Quasimodo from being tortured by the townspeople at the Feast of Fools and stands up for him, she saves Captain Phoebus from being killed by Frollo's soldiers and her song "God Help The Outcasts" shows that she does truly want to save her people from Frollo.
She did reveal that Quasimodo was deformed during the Feast of Fools, but this was an accident and she felt guilty about doing it. She also initially acted aggressive toward Phoebus when he met her at the cathedral, but this is because he was one of Frollo's soldiers and she realizes he is not evil and stops attacking him.
While not as heroic as Quasimodo I would still give Esmeralda a yes but I will leave it up to you.
