Justin The Rat.jpg

Hello everyone! I will be doing Justin from The Secret of NIMH.

What's The Work?

The Secret of NIMH is a 1982 American animated fantasy adventure film directed by Don Bluth in his directorial debut and based on the 1971 children's novel Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien. To save her ill son, a field mouse must seek the aid of a colony of rats, with whom she has a deeper link than she ever suspected.

Who Is He?/What Has He Done?

Justin is one of the original rats who escaped NIMH. He was the Captain of the Guard. When Mrs. Brisby comes to the rose bush for the Rats' aid, not only is he aroused by her but he is more than willing to help move her house to the lee of the stone. After Nicodemus tells Mrs. Brisby about NIMH and gives her the Stone, Justin gives them a boat ride and tells Mrs. Brisby about drugging the cat, which is how Mr. Ages broke his leg. On the night of the move, Justin assists Mrs. Brisby in drugging the cat, but she gets caught by Billy. He runs off to her house after he promises her he'll come back for her later.

During the move, things get really bad and with Nicodemus's death, Justin is simply heartbroken. While mourning over his death, Sullivan comes to him to let him know Mrs. Brisby is in trouble. He charges between her and Jenner, protecting her from him. When Jenner catches his eye on the Stone, he pushes Justin away and slashes him across the upper left arm. As he strangles Mrs. Brisby, Justin rushes to her aid and kicks him to the side, helping Mrs. Brisby up and dragging her away from Jenner as he gets up again (off-screen).

Justin battles Jenner in a swordfight and nearly defeats him. As Jenner gets up to the lee and prepares to send a blow above his head, Justin is horrified and is about killed until Sullivan throws a dagger, from a far distance, into Jenner's back and fatally wounds him as he falls from fatal height to complete unconsciousness. When the Brisby home begins to sink in the mud, Justin and the rats get some rope and try to pull the cinder block out. It is no good and begins to sink into the mud, taking Mrs. Brisby with it.

He runs to the rescue and pulls her out as she becomes devastatingly upset. The Stone bursts out from the mud and as Mrs. Brisby uses it, Justin, Mr. Ages and the other rats bow in front of her. After she passes out, he picks her up and carries her into the house, into bed. She offers him the Stone and he takes it as he takes on his new position as leader of the Rats of NIMH in Thorn Valley.

In the sequel The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to The Rescue, he becomes Timmy Brisby's mentor and guides him into thinking things through and becoming a hero like his late father. And later, he came to save him and Jenny from NIMH.

Admirable Standards

Justin is shown to be heroic, selfless, brave, kind and loving as he plays a big part as he strived to lead the rats to escape from the Rose Bush and to Thorn Valley and help Mrs. Brisby to move her home. In the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, he saved Brutus from the extermination but then went back and died trying to save another rat. He also assists Mrs. Brisby in drugging the cat, Dragon so the plan can succeed. When he hears about Nicodemus' death, he immediately becomes heartbroken.

Later when Jenner attacks Mrs. Brisby, He immediately rushes to save Mrs. Brisby from Jenner and kicks him down when he starts grabbing her and helps Mrs. Brisby up and battles Jenner in a sword duel and stabs him in the stomach.

When the Brisby home starts sinking, he gets the other rats to get some rope to pull it out, but with no avail and pulls Mrs. Brisby to safety from sinking. He becomes the new leader after Nicodemus's death and leads the rats to Thorn Valley.

In the sequel The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to The Rescue, he became Timmy's mentor and guides him into thinking things through and becoming a hero like his late father and rightfully scolds him for leaving his post and that he needs to listen. And later came to save him and Jenny from NIMH.

Corrupting Factors

None, he is undoubtedly heroic, brave, and selfless.

Final Verdict

I think he should, thanks to his big part in saving Brutus from the extermination and dies saving another rat in the book, leading the rats to Thorn Valley, helping Mrs. Brisby move her house from the farm, battling Jenner, trying to save Mrs. Brisby's home in the film, and becoming a good mentor to Timmy in the sequel.
