Radar Normal Outfit AaB

"Taste my bravery!"

Hello everyone, welcome to my first removal. This innocent soul is a great character in Minecraft: Story Mode. Unfortunately, there is one glaring flaw in his most admirable act. Thanks to the always helpful Jester of chaos for giving me permission to do this removal.

What's the Work?

Minecraft: Story Mode is a spin-off of Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios and Telltale Games in 2015. It is an episodic point-and-click adventure game, where the player controls the main protagonist, Jesse, on his/her adventures and quests to save the world.

The game would receive another season in 2017. Jesse's world is threatened by the legendary Admin named Romeo, prompting him/her to go on their most dangerous journey yet, encountering new allies and dangerous enemies.

Who is he?

Radar was introduced in the Season 2; formerly a citizen of Champion City before moving to Beacontown and becoming Jesse's intern. After the Prismarine Colossus was defeated, Romeo revealed himself and set up another challenge for Jesse in the Icy Palace of Despair. Radar tags along and participates in the challenges, but was ultimately eliminated and thrown into the Sunshine Institute: Romeo's prison in the Underneath. Fortunately, Jesse was able to get everyone out and explore the Underneath further. Radar accompanied Jesse while he met Fred's People, took on the Romeoburg gauntlet, and discovered a weapon to defeat the Admin. *Cough cough potato*

Right before escaping the Underneath through a portal, the heroes and Fred's People are attacked by a Giant Enderman (more information below.) Depending on the choices made during this situation, Radar will either return to the surface or stay in the Underneath. If Radar returns to the surface, he meets up with some friends and helps Jesse get up Romeo's tower. If he stays in the Underneath, he distracts the Enderman away from Fred's People, later showing up at the Terminal to save Jesse, Petra, Jack, and Romeo from a glitched Colossus.

Why doesn't he Qualify?

Save Fred's People Or Return With Radar - Minecraft- Story Mode Season 2 Episode 4

Before reading this section, I highly recommend watching this video, as it make the situation more clear.

In the Underneath, the heroes are attacked by hordes of hostile mobs and the Giant Enderman. Jesse is given two choices:

  • Option A: Return to the surface with Radar.
  • Option B: Save and return to the surface with Fred's People.

If Jesse chooses Option B, Radar uses himself as bait in order to distract the Giant Enderman from killing Fred's People, which were strangers he met yesterday, allowing them to escape with Jesse. This is very admirable since Fred's People have been trapped in the Underneath for ages. If this choice was made, Radar would miraculously survive and even enter the Terminal to save the heroes and Romeo. As great as this act is, it heavily relies on Fridge Horror, since it is unknown if the Giant Enderman would have actually killed Fred's People. If Option A is chosen, Jesse will escape with Radar rather than the Fred's People. As a result, they aren't seen again, meaning it's unclear whether they survived or not. In fact, lead writer Eric Stripe states that the fate of Fred's People is entirely left for speculation if this choice is made.

During the Option A scenario, the Giant Enderman is last seen turning away from Fred's People to attack the portal, giving them a very open window to flee. As mentioned by Jesse, Fred's people have lived in the Underneath for years, so if anyone knows how to survive down there, it's them. This isn't a far'fetched assumption, making it even more likely that they survived the attack.

Additionally, if Jesse chooses Option A, it's possible for Radar to not even perform his admirable act at all. However, the intent is very clearly there.

In conclusion, while his sacrifice is noble, the Fridge Horror makes it get overshadowed by Reuben's sacrifice, which undoubtedly saved the entire world from getting eaten by the Wither Storm.

One more thing I noticed while doing research for this removal: in 1:17:20 of the video on the right, Radar has a minor jerkish moment when meeting Xara back at the portal, saying "sounding pretty Admin-ish there," even crossing his arms afterwards. This is pretty out of character, since Radar is a very polite and friendly person; whenever he does say something insulting, it's usually in the heat of the moment and quickly apologizes after. Nonetheless, he didn't show any remorse nor apologized for this comment in particular, so it's preventing. Especially since Xara hates being associated with the Admin/Romeo, it doesn't help Radar's case at all.

Final Verdict

While a good candidate, he has a minor jerkish moment and his most admirable act relies on Fridge Horror since it is unclear if the Giant Enderman would have actually killed Fred's People. This results in him failing the Admirable Standard to Reuben, who made a much more impactful sacrifice. An unfortunate cut for me, but what do ya'll think?
