So I have recently gotten Jim Hawkins approved for NPG and felt like a proposal should be done on the film's tritagonist, Captain Amelia.
What’s The Work?
Treasure Planet is Disney’s 43rd full length animated feature film. It follows Jim Hawkins on his adventure to Treasure Planet to help his mother rebuild her inn.
Who is She/ What has She done?
Captain Amelia is the franchise’s tritagonist. She is a cat-human hybrid who commands the RLS Legacy as its captain.
She is first seen aloft and descending onto the ship’s deck. She compliments Mr. Arrow on a job well done and meets Delbert Doppler and Jim Hawkins and invites them into her office. She locks the map in a chest due to distrusting the crew Doppler had hired. She then orders Mr. Arrow to escort the duo to the galley, where John Silver is waiting. She is next seen commanding the ship as it launches, ordering Turnbuckle to head southwest 2-1-0-0, and ordering Zoff to activate the artificial gravity. She then points out to Silver that his cabin boy (Jim Hawkins) is doing nothing, inciting the former to give Jim the job of mopping the ship’s floor.
She is next seen during the Supernova. When the ship fails to avoid it in time, she orders for the sails to be tied down, and later, unfurled, and for Jim Hawkins to secure the lifelines. When Arrow is killed by Scroop, she frowns at Jim for supposedly “failing to secure his lifeline” not knowing that his lifeline was indeed secured and Arrow had died solely because Scroop had cut his rope in half.
When the mutiny starts, she entrusts Jim with the map, and escapes with him and Delbert Doppler. When they crash land, she is injured but asks Jim to hand over treasure planet’s map, only to realize that Morph had tricked Jim into leaving the map behind by shapeshifting as it. She orders Jim to stifle Morph and find a better hideout when she notices some of the pirates are following them.
When Doppler tends to her in B.E.N.’s house, she compliments his eyes and orders for the pirates to be stopped. After Jim successfully retrieves the map and avenges Mr. Arrow, she is seen tied up (along with Delbert) by the pirates. She and Delbert are taken with them when Jim orders Silver to take him with them in exchange for the map but are left on the longboat with a pirate keeping watch.
After witnessing Jim save the crew, she congratulates him and advises him to join the Space Military Academy. In the climax, she is seen with Delbert and their children.
Corrupting Factors
While she did silently blame Jim for Mr. Arrow's death, it doesn’t count as a corrupting factor for 2 reasons.
- She didn’t notice Scroop cutting his lifeline or Arrow falling overboard as she was focused on timing the black hole’s explosions to escape from it.
- There’s no indication that she held any animosity towards Jim over it, especially considering she was more than willing to work with him during the mutiny and even complimented him after he saved the crew.
Even her advising Silver to “save his claptrap for the judge” isn’t a corrupting factor as it was justified considering what he did. Additionally, her using guns against the pirates was in self-defense.
Admirable Standards
Given that she saved the crew from falling into the black hole with Delbert’s help, (something that he and Jim also worked together to do during the planet’s destruction), it’s safe to say that she, Jim, and Delbert are the most admirable characters of the franchise. While you could argue that Jim is more admirable due to endangering himself to save the crew, it isn’t really a fair comparison as she was injured during the planet’s destruction and couldn’t have saved them herself even if she wanted to. It’s safe to say she has crossed the goodness zone, and failing the admirable standard is of no concern in her case.
Final Verdict
I say yes to Captain Amelia being Pure Good due to having no corrupting factors (unlike Jim Hawkins) and saving the crew.
