Toothless

What's the Work?[]

How to Train Your Dragon was a book that was adapted into a trilogy of theatrically released animated films and a couple of television series. It is a fantasy following vikings as they live alongside dragons.

Who is Toothless?[]

Toothless is a dragon, more specifically, a Night Fury, the last of his kind. He later becomes the partner/friend/pet of the main protagonist Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, aiding him in protecting their homeland of Berk.

Why He Doesn't Qualify[]

  • In the original Pure Good proposal, all that was stated about his actions was basic heroic traits such as defending Hiccup and other dragons. Toothless may be heroic, but his actions are basic heroism and don't extend beyond that.
  • Most of his heroic actions are under Hiccup's orders. While he might not fight the commands given to him, he mainly is just acting on command.
  • Toothless is a feral animal; plain and simple. Granted he's a smart one, but he's been trained to obey. He is acting out of instinct, and protecting other dragons or fighting for the role of alpha are just basic animal actions. He has even been known to abandon his master/friend in search of a mate and home; He's a predator that acts on instinct before morality. Compound that with an occasional vicious nature as well.
  • He acts with the aggression and ferocity of a predatory animal; only under Hiccup's order does he show restraint. Toothless is not one to show mercy or restraint; again, he's an animal.

Verdict[]

Toothless may be an intelligent and loyal animal, but he's still an animal. His heroic actions were trained and commanded to him, and even then, they are pretty standard heroism. Additional heroic actions are just his basic animal instincts of protecting his clan and fighting for superiority, and most are done with an aggression and ferocity that his master has to restrain. For these reasons, I vote "cut".
