What's the work?[]

The Toy Story franchise is a series of critically acclaimed computer-animated movies produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. So far, there have been 4 main movies, a couple of TV specials, some shorts, and even a couple of series based on it. They revolve around the concept that toys are sentient beings, with the main focus being on a group of toys that were originally owned by a boy named Andy Davis and led by a toy cowboy named Woody. They interact with each other like people when humans aren't around, often ponder existential questions like what their main purpose in life is or what really gives them value, and often unexpectedly end up going on adventures that challenge or change them in some way.

Who is she and what does she do?[]

Mrs. Potato Head is a supporting character in the franchise, and is a toy that acts as a female companion/wife to Mr. Potato Head. Andy gets her as a Christmas gift at the end of the first movie, much to his Mr. Potato Head's delight, and she makes her first actual appearance in Toy Story 2. However, it's pretty minor; she only appears at the beginning when Mr. Potato Head is looking for and finds her lost earring, which she praises him for. A little later, she wishers her "husband" well when he volunteers to go along with a few of the other toys to track down Woody and bring him back safely when a greedy collector named Al McWiggin steals him during a yard sale, as well as packs a few things in his back compartment that he may need during the journey. Since she doesn't go with them, she's not seen again until the end when they successfully return.

Her biggest role by far, however, is in Toy Story 3, since she is one of the few toys that Andy has kept, and along with the others, she is nearly picked up by the garbage truck when Andy's mom mistakes them for trash, which convinces them that Andy no longer wants them, and to donate themselves to a daycare so they can once again be played with. However, it ends up being a much more horrible place than they think since a toy named Lots 'o' Huggin' Bear runs the place like a prison, and with the enforcement of some other toys who have allied with him, forces many of the others, including Andy's toys, to be roughly handled by the toddlers. However, they were quickly able to come up with an elaborate escape plan and got out of the place, as well as subsequently escape a fiery death from an incinerator when they found themselves transported to a landfill through a series of events. Once they successfully made their way back to Andy's house before he left for college, thanks to Woody writing a quick note that he thinks is from his mom, rather than put them in the attic like he planned, he donates them all to a girl named Bonnie Anderson, who enthusiastically loves toys the way he did when he was young. Since then, she has made several more minor appearances in the fourth movie as well as the shorts as one of the toys she presently plays with.

Why she doesn't qualify[]

To be honest, I'm starting to feel a little like a broken record, but it can't be helped; like with the other characters I've brought up so far, she simply doesn't do much to stand out, even for a supporting character. Unlike her "husband", I don't think she has any corrupting traits; the closest I can think of to one is when she got riled up when Lotso called her "sweet potato", but even that's too minor to be considered a problem. However, even in Toy Story 3, which was her biggest appearance, she has very little actual heroism to her credit; since one of her eyes was left at Andy's house, she helped the others by using it to see what Andy was doing, including observing that he was upset when he noticed they were missing, which made them collectively realize that Woody was telling the truth when he said he meant to put them in the attic, not put them out with the trash, and led to them all reconsidering their stance on leaving Andy. However, that's about the extent of it; even when they were escaping, she didn't play a particularly big part in it. Since she stayed behind in Toy Story 2, she also didn't really do anything in that movie either, although she did adopt the 3 squeeze toy aliens that Mr. Potato Head saved as their "children" of sorts. Plus, you have to give her credit for at least one other thing; she was definitely a good influence on Mr. Potato Head; before Andy got her, he was far more abrasive and antagonistic in the first movie, especially towards Woody. However, by the second movie, even though he still retained a somewhat rude, grumpy and sarcastic personality, he became a lot nicer, more likeable, and even more heroic, which was almost definitely a result of having her around since that's the only thing that really changed for him. However, in a franchise where toys regularly put themselves in danger to save others and even minor toys like the aforementioned 3 unnamed squeeze toy aliens can pull off heroics like saving all of Andy's toys from being incinerated, I'm still not convinced that's enough.

Final Verdict[]

I feel like there's more room for debate in her case compared to the other Toy Story characters I've made removals for since she definitely does at least a little more than the bare minimum, but I still don't think she does anything that truly stands out, especially for the standards of the franchise. Again, mellowing out her "husband" may be one of her most notable deeds, which in of itself, certainly deserves acknowledgment, but more often than not, she doesn't even do as much as some of Andy's other toys. What do you think?
